Because the majority of us want to be able to see these films with the best possible picture and audio quality. That's why.

I know you value extras more than anything on these releases; I've seen enough posts from you both on here and DVDTalk that show that. That's fine, you're more than welcome to that viewpoint. But most of us on this forum view the extras as just that: extra. The films in question are what we're most concerned about.

I'm curious... have you seen, but just happen to dislike all of these movies? Because I haven't seen any of them and while I don't feel inclined to put in any pre-orders or anything, whatever I happen to have already known or whatever I found out about these films in the past few minutes makes me want to see all of them... (not sold on the documentary - wish it was The Sorrow and The Pity,) but all of these sound pretty fun and exciting.

Yeah, I wish I would have got one of the titles I have been hoping for, but this line-up looks to be the most crowd pleasing line up I have seen (have only been following for only 6 months or so, but still.)

I don't think you understand me. The same goes for Judex.
A DVD is being released of the film.
On the same day, a BD/DVD combo is being released by the same company.
My question: why not just release the combo pack?

Hard Days Night and Picnic are must buys. Might look at all that heaven allows.

What if the DVD quality needed improvement and better Extras are now available?? Is that not important too??

Utterly baffled that this month all the upgrades are BD/DVD combo packs after last month's weren't...

Wasn't the whole point of combo releases to save money on 2 runs? Not much has changed, except they seem to only be doing a "DVD only" release for certain combo packs.

L'Eclisse is the crown jewel of June lineup for me. It's a perfect Antonioni film.

I'm always geared up to own a 1950s Technicolor film on Blu-ray, so All That Heaven Allows is a no-brainer.

Picnic at Hanging Rock will be a great upgrade. I really want to see how some of these images look in high definition, and I look forward to revisiting the film for the first time in many years.

Judex has my attention, since I'm such a big fan of Eyes Without a Face.

I understood you. Again, it's the Beatles. The cost to also release a DVD of this is nothing compared to how much just the DVD will sell with the general public. It's not L'Eclisse, the audience is much different and much much (much) bigger. I'd say its a smart move especially if they got rights that last a long time.

I'm happy to take anything. I have only been collecting since June so maybe in a year or so I'll be pushing for new films instead of upgrades

Picnic at Hanging Rock and A Hard Day's Night are definite buys for me. And Judex sounds interesting, a possible blind buy for me.

Out of the six new films announced for June, only 1 of them is going to be released in the clear plastic cases (the other 5 are 3 discs--1 Blu and 2 fuzzy-def DVDs). I will love Criterion forever and am excited about all of these movies, but I miss the old Blu-ray-only releases. Just my two cents. Still adore the company and can't wait for The Picnic at Hanging Rock.

I'm not much of a collector, I just buy what catches my interest. Since I live in the UK, most of the Criterion's I buy are from second hand sellers on Amazon. Some of the one's I've bought are good as new, whilst some were actually brand new. A few week's ago I bought an advertised second hand copy of Lumet's 12 Angry Men and Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes, I paid around £16 for each of them, and they were brand new and sealed. Sometimes it pays to wait, but even this practice is fast disappearing. Very rarely I buy brand new or pre-order Criterion titles, the last two Criterion's I bought which were brand new were Fincher's The Game and Mann's Thief (which I pre-ordered) I always pre-order from DVDWorldUSA since, most of the time, their new releases are shipped out two weeks before the discs are officially released.

In my opinion it's an utter shame they're not all released in the digipak packaging. It looks so much nicer and feels like so much more of a complete product in this form.

I'm pretty sure he understood you...
a 19.99 SRP for a DVD only title will reach even more people. although The Beatles appeal to all ages, many fans are older and may not have a Blu-ray player and don't want one. If they can pick up the disc for closer to 10 bucks, then that is an extremely viable option.. and a wise move on the part of Criterion

Hearts and Minds is an upgrade that looks to most definitely be worth it.
All that Heaven Allows most definitely does not IMO
