I'm getting really anxious to re-visit Persona. I've held off on watching it again in anticipation of the blu-ray. It's been 6 years since my last viewing ![]() |

I upgraded my copy of Repo Man a few weeks back when Amazon had about a dozen CC titles for under $20 as their deal of the day. I got around to watching it tonight and forgot what a wonderfully insane 80's sleezefest it was. Talk about an off the wall movie, man it was great. The little touches just make the world seem so out of place!
I need to dig out my DVD copy and give it to a friend and share the love! |

I just got back from seeing Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris on a big theater screen at Midtown Art Cinema here in Atlanta.
Oh my dear sweet Lord, this was a cool experience. I actually had company for this one, since one of my running friends wanted to see the movie as well. We got there early to hear an Emory University professor give a short introduction to the film, and we stayed to hear the professor answer questions from the audience. I love how every person has different interpretations of certain aspects of the film. I've never thought of Solaris as purposely ambiguous, but I also do not think that it's a cop-out to say that everyone takes something different home from the film. I've seen this movie about a dozen times, and I realize something new with each subsequent viewing. The professor discussed how Bibi Andersson (The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona) was initially in consideration to play the role of Hari. I love Bibi Andersson, but I think that everyone will agree with me that Natalya Bondarchuk owns the role. |

I just finished The Great Beauty and it instantly became my favorite film of 2013. I honestly can't believe what I just saw.
The film is very similar to Amarcord, in my opinion, where we are taken on a journey with the characters in the film over x amount of time and grow and learn with them, until it all comes full-circle in a not so perfect, yet satisfying kind of way. Amazing story, amazing cinematography, amazing film all around. |

After I watched the film, I decided to read several reviews instead of watching the documentary, Liv and Ingmar. Even with some interpretations under my belt, I still think it would benefit from another several watches. ![]() I can't get the intro sequence out of my head...so haunting! Quote:
Amarcord is one of my favorite films and hands down my favorite Fellini. I truly mean it when I say it, but it is the one thing I thought of the most over the course of this film. Buy with confidence! ![]() |

Just got back from seeing Grand Budapest Hotel! I saw the 10:30 PM showing here. Wowowowowowowowow. This blows Moonrise Kingdom out of the stratosphere. Totally amazing set and production design and art production and costume design. Amazing attention to detail. This is the most perfect Wes Anderson movie ever...its almost too perfect. So many amazing actors. This was a Wes Anderson movie on steroids. Wes Anderson blew his load on this film for sure. I give this film 3 3/4 stars all the way. It's up there on par with The Royal Tenenbaums but not as funny. There was a story here though and what a grand story. Holy F@##$%*%$^*#@)!@*%^*

I have all of them and my favorites would be 3 WOMEN and SWEETIE, with DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE maybe tied with A MAN ESCAPED for third. The other two are "interesting" and worth seeing, but potentially more off-putting with probably less replay value. Of course after saying that, I'd like to revisit FISH TANK soon because I just watched Andrea Arnold's amazing reimagining of WUTHERING HEIGHTS.

The only one I've seen, let alone own, is "The Double Life of Veronique" which is one of my favorite films of all time. So, I may be biased. But I think it's miraculous. Heck, it's worth it for Irene Jacob's performance alone, IMO.

A Man Escaped is actually the most accessible film in that mix followed by Fish Tank. Both are very good. I absolutely fell for Fish Tank - a truly wonderful film. All except Medium Cool are above average, though. MC is quite the stinker. |

Persona looks divine on blu-ray. The detail and contrast is incredible. Sven Nyvist lighting technique is brought to the forefront with this release. This is one of the greatest movies ever made. |

There is a French Pathe Blu-ray of Le Samourai, but the transfer is murky, and it's one of the rare instances where I would recommend the Criterion DVD over a Blu-ray. The existing Criterion DVD is well worth owning if you are even remotely intrigued by the movie. I'm inclined to say that I don't think that a suitable high definition transfer of Le Samourai is coming soon, but I honestly have no idea and, for all I know, Criterion may announce an upgrade next month. |

Sadly that seems to be the case with the blu-ray of KC Confidential. It's a shame a quality noir like that isn't in good hands.
