I watched it several months ago and I found it entertaining.

I don't really know what to compare it to, but in case you're curious, it's a revenge-styled ghost-like horror film. It definitely has its eerie moments throughout.

I hate to say what I would compare it to, but it's a loose, loose version of the horror-tragedy folktale of The Demon of Rashomon Gate--
Which, as Japanese anime fans know, was given a slightly sillier twist in the Tenchi Muyo series.

I think cheesy is a good way to describe Kuroneko; I found it to be a disappointing film. It might have some camp value but not very scary. Maybe your mileage would vary.

Every time I've checked library DVDs with more than one disc, the supplements disc is relatively unscathed, while the feature disc is scratched up. I concluded that there isn' t much interest in the supplements.

I love the film. I've viewed the disc 4-5 times since I purchased it. Its director (Shindo) is quite accomplished: made movies until he was 98 and died at 100 in 2012.

Onibaba and The Naked Island are masterful, too.

Since they done Fantastic Mr. Fox, who'd love to see Criterion put this on blu-ray/DVD for the first time in the US?

It never had an official US release and maybe fans of this 1988 adult animated sci-fi fantasy fave from Rene Laloux can get rid of their bootleg DVDs.

It can can a new transfer of the original uncut French Language version plus the dubbed Lightyears version with a quality HD transfer with extras like a documentary with interviews by the producers and some animators, trailers, poster and still gallery and commentary by an animation historian.

...Don't tell me Wes Anderson did that one TOO!

(It's paint-dryingly static, but at least it ain't quirky.)

I prefer Kaneto Shindô's Onibaba, but Kuroneko is a fun and atmospheric movie that I really need to upgrade to Blu-ray at some point.

I like the vibe of these movies that combine Japanese civil war/samurai era tensions with the supernatural. This particular movie confirms my decision not to be a cat owner.

Thanks.
Its still in print. I sure hope they upgrade this soon.

Wow I've always wanted to see Odd Man Out. Do all the movies on the Criterion Itunes channel eventually come out on Blu-ray?

Love Hulu..
First viewing of Viridiana and The Virgin Spring last night..
Not really sure how I feel yet about Viridiana. I thought it was fine, and interesting themes that have been copied for awhile now, but I'm sure a lot of finer detail or specifis went slightly over my head.
The Virgin Spring was awesome. Loved the cinematography and Max Von Sydow was so good. Knocking some more Bergman out later in the week. Next up is Summer Interlude and Autumn Sonata.
From Bunuel, I think I'm going with The Exterminating Angel next.

Federico Fellini's 8½ was spectacular on a big theater screen tonight. Three friends and I were there for the opening lecture by an Emory University professor and for some of the Q&A after the film. I'm a little closer to comprehending this visually-striking somewhat-autobiographical musing this time around, although I prefer to take in the movie at face value instead of overanalyzing. It's a great story about filmmaking in general, lack of focus, and burnout. I've never worked in film (other than my one day in the sun as a movie extra), but I can relate to the burnout aspects of the story.

This showing of 8½ was advertised as a new digital restoration, meaning that it might well have been the recent 50th anniversary restoration. I've always thought of 8½ as one of Criterion's best presentations of a black-and-white film, but the images took on a new resonance in a theater.

I've been quite fortunate to have seen Seven Samurai, Breathless, Solaris, and 8½ at these Tuesday Classics showings. Catch them on a big screen if you have a chance.

We need more Buñuel blu rays on Criterion. With about the same amount for Tarkovsky films and Robert Bresson films it is slowly becoming a frustrating affair.

No one has mentioned Buñuel for awhile. I highly recommend his masterpiece short film Un Chien Andalou, Phantom Liberty and Belle de Jour (although The Exterminating Angel is fantastic, I prefer the above films) He is truly a surrealist.

It is because of Buñuel and Jodorowsky that I sold all my Lynch films a long time ago.

I doubt that most casual viewers (i.e. most likely, those who rent over buying) care about supplements. But this story might be different for somebody who loves the film enough to buy it.

You're probably right. But I buy or don't buy BDs based on whether or not they have great supplements. There's the occasional exception, but basically even if I really love a film, if the release doesn't have good stuff on it, I will pass it up.

Unfortunately, I've noticed that commentaries are becoming rarer.
