Has everyone posted their top 5 most re-watchable Criterions? I have collected 35 posts that people posted on this forum in the last few days and have put together a final tally of the most re-watched films.

I will post the final results later today or tomorrow, but if anyone has yet to submit their top 5 most re-watchable Criterions, please do so now, so you can be included in the final results! Thanks!

I posted mine a few days back, but I'm not going to look, because I'll probably want to change them already.

Off topic, but related to your avatar... Under the Skin is opening here in Atlanta on Friday, and I cannot wait!

Im not sure if I want to get Shoah or not, its packaging is stunning and I'm sure the documentary is - just not sure if its my sort of thing? not fussed about run time but just not sure subject matter will hold me :/

DYING to see Under The Skin, but not being shown anywhere near me - wish it was VOD

To choose right, I should have seen most Criterion Blurays, which I haven't. But anyway, my top5 that have a re-watchable quality to me are:

Howards End
Double Vie de Veronique
The Thin Red Line
Charade
All that Heaven Allows

Your head is going to explode Owl. It's amazing. I hope Criterion can release it.

Holy cow, I didn't know this was going on.

I'm assuming these are just the current Criterions. Otherwise, RoboCop and Hard Boiled might have to be at the top.

My top 5 rewatchables would be:

01: Koyaanisqatsi
02: Antichrist
03: Brazil
04: The Third Man
05: Eating Raoul

Tati isn't for everyone. Truffaut described Playtime as "a movie made on another planet where they make films differently". I think his films are funny, but they're slow burn. One evaluation I've read is that Tati satirizes modernity in a bitter way, yet I think he's simply trying to get the audience to see how funny everyday life can be. His comedy is very similar to Buster Keaton's, where a big setpiece would be made just for one gag.

Comedy isn't measured by the amount of laughs, but rather the complexity. I can't say I laughed constantly during The General, but it's one of the most brilliant comedies ever made. Tati's more conventional Mr. Hulot's Holiday has a lot of slow burn gags, such as the door spring (which might be the best use of a sound effect to be funny).

But I think it would be safe to say that Tati is easy to get into if you're already into silent film, especially Buster Keaton.

Speaking of which, an announcement of Cronenberg's Scanners would be nice.

I actually saw Under the Skin last week in a movie theater near Union Square in NYC. I hate to say this, but I didn't really "get" the film. It's the kind of movie you need to surrender yourself to. It can be quite meditative, hypnotic and entrancing. There is hardly much dialogue spoken in the movie. At first I felt it was going to be a snoozefest and that was after I thought it was already slightly pretentious (I know, this is a word I shouldn't use since its abused, but still). In the end, its a film that needs to be seen multiple times to be understood. I started to make sense of what little story there was after I left the theater, but it definitely is a creepy and unnerving film, leaning on horror. Scarlett is stunning and quite naked throughout the film which I appreciated. Nevertheless, I'm not sure I can recommend this film when its released on Blu-ray as I think it should be rented/viewed before purchasing. That's just my opinion though.

I quite like films that are more of an experience or visual treat than a standard film with plot, its quite nice to be absorbed into this world full of unique sounds and brilliant imagery - even if it doesn't make sense ^^

True, there is a place and time for movies like this, but I'm just not sure this film was effective at even doing that...however, it was an incredibly atmospheric film.

I might have to change my avatar now as I'm becoming embarrassed by it.

I've heard that it differs quite a bit from the source novel, which I read a few weeks ago, and that it's almost more like a series of visually-unnerving vignettes than a cohesive story. I go for that sort of thing, though. After seeing Tarkovsky's Solaris on the big screen recently, I'm all the more eager to see Under the Skin at a theater.

Scarlett Johansson has really been putting the rest of the world to shame lately. She was excellent in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which I quickly decided is my favorite comic book adaptation that I have ever seen, and it's great that they gave her character a lot more to do.

It goes without saying that Criterion ought to tackle Ghost World and Lost in Translation.
