I'm with you here but it is the "established" posters of this thread who are talking about this film and go off topic so really, you just have to take it. Important though to remember for whenever, in the future, they complain.

"we won't be watching anything tomorrow." Experiences like that have been few and far between.

Not really familiar with this critic on RT, but his quote sums it up best for me:

Jordan Hoffman from Film.com:

"If you don't see yourself in its depiction of intense emotion I both envy and pity you."
It's a very rewarding experience, in my opinion, and I think it nicely handles the subject of a homosexual relationship without some form of stereotyping coming into play. I truly cannot wait for the extended cut to come out this year. It's rumored to have an additional 30-60 minutes, so I'm really looking forward to that.

I wrote a rather lengthy review after I saw it last November. You can read it if you like by clicking the Letterboxd link in my signature and it should be towards the bottom of the page.

By the way, have you seen "The Great Beauty"? It's definitely my favorite film of 2013, but I still find "Blue" to be towards the top of the list.

Huh? I can't remember ever complaining about anything regarding posters around here, save for the users that toss around insults.

It's just a couple of posts of us talking about a recent film. I don't see what's so bad about that. We clearly aren't spoiling the film for those that haven't seen it. Just sharing our thoughts.

So by your definition we can talk about anything here, no matter if it is Criterion or not. And actually, from what I've read (not all posts) if someone wanted to go into this film cold, spoilers have been seen.

I have not yet see The Great Beauty.. my efforts to drive into the heart of my city to see it were thwarted. I don't know if it is on Hulu, but my wife and I have decided to switch over to Hulu for the Criterion selection. If not Hulu, then my library will have it available sooner or later.

I know you are a big fan of Wong Kar-wai, Scottie. You've seen them all, I'm sure, but I was pleasantly surprised that Netlix has nearly all of his films - (the early ones I wish to see, anyway) Now that we have a good quality stream working in our house I am looking forward to some of those!

Good news for you is that they recently added both The Great Beauty and La Notte.

RE: WKW - I've only seen Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, In The Mood For Love, and My Blueberry Nights, but I've loved them all. I still have Happy Together sitting on my shelf to watch.

Netflix has As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild, Happy Together and Fallen Angels. I've seen the two Criterion titles. Need to see them again some time as there is a lot to appreciate.

I did not around to seeing The Great Beauty at the theater, but I have no regrets about making a blind purchase of the Blu-ray. It's a visually stunning movie that is paced quite well, and it's probably my third favorite film of 2013 behind All Is Lost and To the Wonder. The cinematography is quite astounding. Of course, the beauty of the location settings are a big help!

... No? I just happened to talk about an "arthouse" film for a couple of posts. If initial impressions bother you so much, don't read them. It's that simple.

I enjoyed The Great Beauty enough this weekend to place orders for Il Divo and This Must Be The Place this morning.

Movies that are still in theaters and have their own dedicated threads don't need to be discussed at length in here. A lot of people like to form their own take without the opinions of critics or family members or random internet posters rattling around in the backs of their heads.

And those people sometimes wish avoiding discussions of a film's themes or comments like 'well, of course I won't tell you what the huge twist is but I'll just say I saw it coming in the first five minutes' were simply a matter of staying out of the various threads devoted to that film.

It's not the end of the world and you're right when you say people are generally pretty respectful in here but the people who say 'd00ds, get a room...better yet, use one of the rooms that are already devoted to that particular film' have a point too.

nice job w/ your review, Scottie! I like what you said about Adele's hair. I noticed it, but I didn't notice it. Good call on that. If I had the time to formulate some articulate thoughts I'd like to write one, too. I haven't read many reviews (as I typically don't) but I think my take - what resonated for me may slightly different than others.

Add in the "couple of posts" from 4-5 other posters and that is a chunk of non-Criterion related posts on the Criterion Collection thread. Again, you see nothing wrong with off-topic posts here, some others do. I don't understand how you can fail to see the point the other poster had.

"bother you so much, don't read them."

And with this you are saying "hey, people can write what they want here, even if it is an off-topic subject that has continued for more than a few days. This is our club where we do what we like" So, if my posts bother you so much, don't read them too

I need to check them out, then.

there is a popular segment on a sports radio show here in Chicago that is called "Who you crappin?" Callers catch on-air personalities, celebrities, athletes, whoever, in 'say one thing and do another,' 'say one thing and then later contradict yourself'.. or whatever. it is done in good fun and even the hosts themselves get caught in contradictions

not taking sides here.. I enjoy your posts Clare, but I got to give you a friendly "Who you crappin?' as I recall you asking about purchasing on Amazon and also an inquiry about web sites that contain critical reviews, so "Clare, who you crappin?"

All related to purchasing Criterions

I've said my part. If people want to treat this thread as a free for all, that is fine. Just don't complain when others throw up a genuine post about it.

Kwaidan's my #1, Ikiru's my #2, and Cries and Whispers is my #3! Ran's #4 but I have a vague memory of there being some reason that would be impossible. The Vanishing (Spoorloos) would round out the top 5. Other than that I'm pretty much happy with whatever, there are upgrades out there that I'd buy due to not having the DVD but mostly I'm interested in new stuff. Peeping Tom & L'Avventura, are a couple others I've been meaning to see. I'd love Dead Ringers and Crash (cronenberg one), too, but I dunno if either of those are still available to them.
