shelf space is a problem for me too, but you shouldnt collect movies like pokemon cards (gotta catch em all ).

so far i ordered 3 of the new digipacks (great beauty, persona , hidden fortress) and 2 of them arrived already without damage (USA -> Germany )

while im not a fan of digipacks , the new ones do at least look better than the old ones.

first world problems i wouldnt mind them releaseing their blurays in eclipse style sets as well. as long as they keep releasing them and do upgrades.

i rediscovered my "love" for cinema the last view days while watching the universal hitchcock collection. and not once did i think about how this could have been looked better if it was done by criterion.. etc..

so much movies out there that have no release at all... ;P keep em coming, even if we need movies from wes anderson and others from to time to time to make money for something that wont sell that good.

You do realize people have space limitations right? Getting more space might be an option for some, but for a lot... it's not.

No one has suggested they should, so this isn't an actual response to the problem of these things ballooning in size in order to accommodate unwanted dvd discs. The continued existence of dvd only releases makes the original reasons given for the dual format switch less...reasonable?

And I don't know, maybe everyone else lives in empty rooms with a mattress, tv, and bare white walls. But for me, if I'm adding another bookcase it means I'm moving something else out of the living room.

Honestly, I've been fairly lucky when it comes to Criterion squashing, although I have an HBO set that was clearly stepped on. But lots of people post about squashed digis, so they have every right to wish for regular cases that can afford to be dropped.

Although personally, I've never had an eco case arrive broken, so maybe CC should just switch to those and then everyone wins.

i think even if a case (or digipack) arrives damaged you will always find a way to get a refund / replacement from sellers like amazon / B&N and criterion.
even the ebay sellers give refunds if you show them the damage.

and a replacement case is only 5$ (same for booklets, covers etc) if you order directly from criterion. and that even works from the EU (did that already myself many times)

but yes its annoying to receive a smashed criterion release ;(

Most amazon sellers let me keep damaged item and give me refund which is nice, they should pack them better, Ives even some shocking packaging, like that stuff that's pretty much bin liner lol

I can understand if people would prefer normal cases, but was just giving my opinions, and it like to challenge others lol

Yeah, I suppose the nature of what art house is has changed . I imagine this was shown there because of the nature of the movie, leading to it having a limited distribution. I wouldn't consider it art house personally, it's just a very dark satirical comedy to me. You do get my drift though as far as the type of films that are often associated with Criterion.

I'm pretty sure it's one of the funniest films in The Criterion Collection for me.

I remember watching it sometime last year with my family and we were all busting a gut at the antics these people pulled.

I can't imagine anyone that collects Criterion watches DVD. Why they didn't pull the plug on the format is beyond me. Are kids watching Persona in the Minivan?

It's possible that the DVDs put out by Criterion are not getting as widely purchased as the Blu-rays are, so they decided to put them both together.

It's actually the exact opposite. The DVDs are being purchased more than the Blu rays so to cut the cost of having to produce both, they combined them.

Maybe. But then why would they release Scanners, amongst other things in both a DVD only version and a combo pack?

I, for one, am still getting into the BD format, and I will probably buy only combo packs for a while, as I want to be able to watch the movies over friends/relatives' houses. When given the chance of a DVD only or a a BD only, I will go for the DVD. That's how I am now, but it will likely change in the coming years.

Not true...............at least with Criterion.

My mistake. I remember reading that article and I guess I got mixed up trying to remember what they said.

Either way, the only dual format I have right now is City Lights and that's in a regular case. I haven't seen the digipaks so I can't comment on them. I'd imagine the argument would die down when/if Scanavo comes out with three disc cases.

I'm having a fun time going through the Superman Anthology, although I've been outside for most of the weekend. I realized yesterday, though, that there are a few more Criterion connections, in addition to the obvious Glenn Ford connection.

Trevor Howard, from Carol Reed's The Third Man and Noel Coward's Brief Encounter, is one of the ill-fated Krypton elders who disagrees with Marlon Brando's Jor-El.

Which brings us to Marlon Brando himself, who appears on Elia Kazan's On the Waterfront.

Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) appears in Brian De Palma's Sisters.

The beautiful and talented Susannah York (Superman's Krypton mother) stars in Ronald Neame's Tunes of Glory.

Maria Schell, who played another one of the Krypton elders, appeared in Luchino Visconti's Le Notti Blanche.

Of course, Gene Hackman has a great role in Downhill Racer as well.

I just finished watching Life During Wartime.

I didn't expect to like the movie at all, but I found it quite enjoyable, even though it does tackle some rather dark subjects in a humorous way.

The film felt a little too repetitive to me at times, but it certainly wasn't bad. The acting was stellar, as was Criterion's presentation of it.
