Not finding one, I looked through the Criterions for $29.99 titles, and ended up getting Jubal (it was a toss-up between that and The Uninvited).

It'll be nice to see Jubal in its intended aspect ratio (the time I watched it on my cable's On Demand, it was cropped to 1.78).
Pretty OT but how much were those two instore? MSRP or were they marked down at all?

Is Y Tu Mama Tambien offensive to certain women? I haven't seen it in so long but if its about objectifying women, I can see why people might not like that cover.

Not offence at all, film or cover. If anything I found the film objectified young men who think 30 seconds of thrusting equals sex.

It's a far more complex story than two horny boys who want to get laid.

I'm sure the Criterion release will blow the Canadian Blu-ray out of the water... But I do prefer the original cover/poster art.

Objectifying women is normal male behavior. The problem is when males see women ONLY as objects.

As much as I'd like to lick my Criterion cover of Tess, I still have not done so. Not yet, anyway.

In other news...

I finished watching all three movies in the Guys Being Guys: Party 3-Pack. I had completely forgotten that William Tepper, who played the lead basketball player role in the Criterion film, Drive, He Said, also played Tom Hanks's brother in Bachelor Party. Pretty funny.

In other other news...

My region free UK Blu-ray of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance arrived in the mail today. This means that Criterion will probably announce it next month.

I swear to God guys. Just when I thought a blu ray addiction was bad enough, I discover a subdivision addiction of Criterion blu rays.

I just finished Il Sorpasso and I absolutely loved it.

It was such a perfect film, although that ending was a complete curve ball thrown in. I understand why it ended that way, but still.

Criterion Month Reviews: Chapter V

Dead Ringers- Spine #021- 2.5/5
I found this to be surprisingly dull and weak. The first 40 minutes or so were interesting, and if it stayed there, I would have enjoyed it. But it didn't. So I didn't.

Head- Spine #544- 4/5
This, my introduction to The Monkees, I liked. I don't know why, but it was so random that it felt like if Monty Python made a musical. Also, you gotta love the fact that they named it what they did so they could advertise a potential sequel as "From the People Who Gave You Head..."

The Last Temptation of Christ- Spine #070- 3/5
I don't care about Jesus. I don't. Not a popular opinion, but it is mine. I saw this because of the names involved. Dafoe was good, as expected. The direction was great. Not enough Bowie. The only actors who seem to be perfect are Stanton (who is great in everything) and Keitel (who is great in ALMOST everything).

The Devil's Backbone- Spine #666- 3.25/5
Well, this was somewhat disappointing as well. Not even a bad movie. Not by any stretch. I was expecting a horror movie, and that was something I did not receive. The best part of this movie is certainly Federico Luppi. Seeing as I did not get what I expected and still didn't mind this, I can see myself revisiting this someday. Not very soon though.

Talking Il Sorpasso

Quite an interesting discussion with: Peter Becker, The Criterion Collection / NYU faculty members: David Forgacs, Antonio Monda & Stefano Albertini.

and as he stated a minute ago - and as I've also said - Criterion is about the WHOLE package, not just just the film or just the artwork, its everything, so when 1 element is weak it can easily put you off spending the extra money to upgrade/double dip.

I honestly don't mind if you guys love the artwork - we all love different things and do things differently ^^
Whatever you say. :roll eyes:

If someone really wants to spend $40 (or $20 during the sale) for a blu-ray INSERT, for a film they will never watch or have any interest in, then they have more problems than what's on the art.

I somewhat agree to a small extent, but you imply that people have quite a lot of issues for wanting the art, which might be a small exaggeration.

Look, i'm the last person you'll find on here that gives a damn about artwork and packaging, but looking at some of those Criterion art work as well as the quality that goes into the transfers and supplement features seriously makes me jealous of you yanks. Stunning, stunning artwork, and I haven't even seen them in the flesh! Some people may want the art work of a blu ray because having a big poster just may not be convenient for their home.

Excuse me? the artwork from Criterion is incredible - and well worth spending that much just for the packaging!

I don't see why its such a HUGE issue to want just the artwork, there are some films on Criterion I have no interest in, but the artwork isa running and I would like that on my shelf for people to see and of rme to admire, and then maybe I can find some appreciation in the film.

Don't forget people collect art and design - not just films :P

I get Criterion BD (more expensive here in the UK) mainly for the film release but the artwork does make a difference if all other things are equal and I do not mind paying a bit extra for it. I look upon imaginative artwork on a BD cover like owning a small painting.

I regret being talked into buying the Arrow UK release of Rififi even though the transfer is every bit as good as the Criterion release. I really love that blue Criterion cover of the film.
