It's a fascinating film about what a band should NOT do for a music documentary.

Oh, nice choice there. I would also like the Chicago Vertigo tour to be released on bluray as well. I mean their 360 tour was released on blu and it came way after that one.

I'd rather see their ZOOTV: live from Sydney concert released on blu-ray. Now THAT is a concert.

I'm not generally into concert films (though I absolutely love The Complete Monterey Pop Festival), but Stop Making Sense is definitely one that I'd pick up. And I'm not really that into The Talking Heads. I mean, I like them well enough, but I'm not a fanatic about them. But Stop Making Sense is an infectiously enjoyable concert film.

Thoughts on Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles? It's on TCM in a few hours. The 3 1/2 minute clip on Criterion's site doesn't look promising if it's typical of it's 200+ minute run time. I'm all up for challenging cinema but .........

I wonder if there is any point of re releasing the beastie boys anthology on bluray. I mean if they can look better at all. Plus it is spike jonze after all.

Thanks
May not be "classical," but "Beauty and the Beast" has an optional opera (sung dialog) by Philip Glass, and "Elevator to the Gallows" has some of Miles Davis' best work (reportedly improvised while he and his band watched scenes from the film).

I know, it is annoying. It was like that when they listed Lawrence of Arabia that ended up only screening in Toronto I am going to keep checking each day, they better show it in Montreal. Whereabouts are you?

Outside the T Dot. I would definitely goto see it if it's showing in Toronto. I actually went this last year to see AHDN in cinemas but it was one of those 5 dollars screening so nothing special at all. Still very fun though.

Nope, Achtung Baby album, their greatest album of all time in 1991. It was released on DVD though but we need an HD version now.

Oh cool, yeah The Joshua Tree is always on best of lists but I think that Achtung Baby is as good as that album.

All of Malick's films have a strong film soundtrack. Days of Heaven has a strong film score by the master Morricone, which is based on the theme by Saint-Saën (Carnival of the Animals-The Aquarium)

The use of Fauré 's Requiem - Paradise and Ives Unanswered Question in The Thin Red Line.

The Tree of Life has an excellent film soundtrack Berlioz, Preisner, Gorecki and the beautiful use of John Tavener's Funeral Canticle.

Montreal is a little too far to travel, even for the Fab Four. I need to check if this is showing in the UK, Im sure my Mum would like to remember what it was like to be 13 and screaming her head off every time The Beatles were mentioned

Here's a couple of titles that it seems don't get enough discussion and attention in this thread:

Pale Flower
The Moment of Truth
Fat Girl
Letter Never Sent
Bigger Than Life
The Ice Storm

Given the recent discussion on the merits of blind buying and whether it's actually possible to appreciate all or almost all of the films one watches, I just wanted to throw out there that I have about 90% of the Criterions released on bluray and have only seen one (Thin Red Line) prior to buying it. That right: all but one of my criterions was purchased 'blind'. And...... I really enjoy all of them. I can count on one hand those that didn't make an strong positive impression on the first viewing (e.g Sweetie), and even those I've grown to like.

This goes for my collections of Kino, Twilight Time, Cohen, and Olive as well. All blind buys, all well-liked.

The clip on Criterion's site is typical of the film. There's little dialog and scenes play out in long, single takes.

Jeanne Dielman is a masterful film -- even a masterpiece -- and I don't use that term lightly. It reconditions the audience so that it elicits gasps from little things like the dropping of a dish scrubber or guffaws when a character's hair is out of place. It forces you to watch film in an entirely new manner and the running time is an important aspect of that. The first time I saw it, I felt myself adjusting to it for the first 20-30 minutes. Gradually it becomes clear how assured every detail about this film is. The direction is phenomenal.

Some of the reviews for the DVD mention compression issues so I'm hoping it gets a beautiful Blu Ray release some day.

That said, this film is probably best seen on the big screen. It's intimate, but a large image allows you to study all the details -- and almost every detail eventually pays off. Also, I generally prefer watching longer films in a darkened theater where there's less to distract me.

I saw it at BAM a few months back and it's incredible how responsive the audience was. I'm sure it attracts a specialized audience, but if you allow yourself to fall under its spell, Jeanne Dielman is quite accessible. And Delphine Seyrig's performance in the title role is remarkable.
