Those Chaplin movies are looking mighty fine on the Barnes and noble website.

Ordered the following from B&N:

Yojimbo & Sanjuro: Two Films by Akira Kurosawa
Shock Corridor
Beauty and the Beast
The Phantom Carriage
Bigger Than Life
Orpheus

Had to cancel one order because a pre-order was delaying the shipment until the 23rd of July. This way I'll be able to order two lots as it spreads across two months of credit card statements. I've been looking forward to this sale since the end of the November one last year.

I personally recommend the Charles Laughton Directorial boxed set for those taking part in the BN sale.

I'd be sure to hunt for it tonight, if I didn't already have it.

so this guy had his account suspended a few times? any chance we can have that happen again? I am convinced that his only purpose on this thread is to antagonize.

in the past, I have also noted that I haven't a clue what he is going on about in more than 50% of his posts... talk about someone in love with his own prose.

I blind buy often, in fact many of my purchases (especially Criterion) are blind buys. Whether it's catching a film on cable one night and then blind buying the director's other films (as I did with Kurosawa years ago, after watching Seven Samurai), or seeing a recommendation from someone here and then blind buying the director's other films (as I did with Melville late last year), etc.

Just ordered the following on B&N's website for the 50% sale:

World on a Wire (blind buy, after reading the recent discussions here, it sounds like it's right up my alley! Have never seen a Fassbinder film.)
Quadrophenia
Weekend (Godard) (blind buy, working my way through Godard's 60s films)
Wings of Desire
Paris, Texas
3:10 to Yuma
Jubal (blind buy)

Will eventually get July releases Scanners and Insomnia as well.

I am not really knowledgable about art, but that first Andrew Wyeth painting is one of my favorites of all time. From the first time I ever saw it I was instantly taken with it. Years ago, a band I was in based our demo artwork on that famous painting, albeit with a much darker twist…

If you want to see a Criterion title that looks like a painting come to life, then I encourage you to buy Picnic at Hanging Rock.

In the supplements they talk about how they placed stockings over the camera to create that hazey imagery and how amusing it was finding the right ones (I think!).

Another film that is like a painting is Barry Lyndon, which was Kubricks goal.

I also bought it a long time ago and I remember watching it a long time ago, but I had 4 hours to kill, so I figured this would finally be the night I watch this documentary. It wasn't too sad actually, but that is subjective.

I'm still holding off on watching Shoah, because I know that will really depress me.

on a somewhat similar note to Shoah..

has anyone seen the documentary The Sorrow and the Pity? seems like more Criterion fodder and I'd like to see it some time

I actually found the World on a Wire Criterion DVD in a used record shop a while ago, quite surprised to find it here in Stockholm. It's really cool, it's almost like a precursor to Blade Runner or The Matrix with the themes it deals with. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction with some depth to it. Weekend is a really strange experience to watch - I first saw it on a date which was... interesting

Indeed! Beautiful movie. Kubrick borrowed ultra high speed lenses from NASA to shoot the indoor candlelight scenes! Would be great as the next Kubrick addition to the Collection.
