didnt he mean the french / UK sets? at least playtime is different in these releases. someone else posted a link a while ago. there is music @ the end of the criterion release that is missing from the newer boxsets.

I was referring to the forthcoming UK release from StudioCanal (several other European countries are also releasing this set).

I'm holding you personally responsible now if I buy George Washington this month and don't like it lol. Anything Malick-like I'm in 100% guess I'll buy it with scanners next week

Just a little heads-up that Lifeboat, one of Alfred Hitchcock's masterpieces, as well as a long wished for title by many for The Criterion Collection treatment, will be on TCM on July 20.

Importing has it's perks! Early shipping is one of the (few) benefits that we have outside of the UK. Most new releases tend to ship 10 days early or so when bought from a store like Movietyme or DVDWorldUSA.

This worked out at $35, inc. shipping and taxes, so not that bad, especially when shipping only takes 3-5 days. Sure, it's a bit of a premium, but this was only £4 more expensive than the average UK disc from a store (it was actually £1 cheaper than Artificial Eye's Mouchette is in my local HMV!).

This is a movie that captures life as it is, using solely still or slow moving shots, only diegetic music, moving at a slow pace, holding on shots to showcase nature how we see it without any fast cuts, and relying on emotions rather than dialogue to tell its story. There aren't any of the clichés and other aspects of Hollywood films and most films in general in this. Specifically, nothing is sensationalized or overly dramatized or overly sentimental. Everything is natural. There's a beauty in that, and I respect that. It's a very simple film, one that requires you to drop all of your expectations of traditional narrative and just settle into it. The ADD 12 year old in me was calling it boring and saying not much is happening, but the mature, refined taste side of me was drawn into these characters' existences. There is drama, though it is subtle and never artificial or manufactured. The turning point in the movie is unexpected and changes the movie from then on, so it's a spoiler to even mention it. This film brilliantly and realistically demonstrates the aftermath of such an event, thanks to Gotz Spielmann's restrained, calculated direction. Because of the minimalist approach, so to speak, without much exposition, there is room for interpretation of symbolism and the themes and thoughts/actions of the characters. The shot of an object falling into a lake and creating ripples can represent a few different things.

This is a movie that you think higher of once you finish it, and I can see why others think so highly of it here. The interview with the director and the behind-the-scenes doc, coupled with the booklet, were great too and articulated a lot of what I was thinking while watching the film. Spielmann made some good points about life and showing that through cinema that I agree with.

Thank you to the members who talked up this film and kept my interest in it as a blind buy, for I never would have seen this movie otherwise.
You nailed it! One of the best titles in the Collection.

Sayles still does that. He's still today's version of himself, especially since Soderbergh "retired."

Interesting that TCM has included Fritz Lang's MINISTRY OF FEAR as one of the titles in their new "Dark Crimes, Volume 2" Vault Collection, which just began shipping. The Criterion edition was released just last year.

I've never seen it, and would be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on the film itself, and Criterion's blu-ray edition ...

Haha! Forum protocol dictates that any positive note about premium importer services must be countered by a comment citing a negative by Mr. Mansinthe.

I thought it was great! Some great set pieces, and very moody atmosphere. Of the top of my head I remember 5 fantastic scenes, including a bombing strafe that near misses the protagonist. Very rewatchable.

I've been thinking of picking up some Antonioni. I wanted to get my feet wet and for one reason or another I decided on La Notte. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but ended up really enjoying it. It's been about six months since I've seen it and I find that it has sort of stuck with me.

I'll likely be picking up another Antonioni from the B&N sale. Which one should it be?

L'Eclisse. It's apart of the trilogy and it's about as accessible as La Notte. I'd say it's better, and the ending is one of the greatest things of Antonioni's career. Plus, you know, Monica Vitti.

If you want to seek outside of Blu, I'd recommend the other film in the trilogy, L'Avventura. If you want to stick to Blu, go with Red Desert. It's my favorite of his, but it's not something I recommend for people just getting into Antonioni. You really have to be on his wavelength for this one.

If you liked La Notte, then L'Eclisse is a very safe bet. I also find Red Desert to be a masterpiece, but it's not for everyone.
