Probably not as it's Magnolia owned.

It's one of the best documentaries ever made. It made me somehow love film even more.

I agree. Roger Ebert was my favorite critic and this documentary is a lovely homage to him and his influence on cinema.

Re: The Long Day Closes -- I absolutely love this movie. I found a bad VHS dub online after Criterion announced it and was bowled over. I couldn't believe I'd never heard of it and I'm sure I will watch it again and again. One of my very favorite Criterion releases. That said -- it's not for everyone. Davies isn't interested in telling a story as much as evoking childhood memories. His use of sound and picture is pretty singular and some people simply won't be into it so I wouldn't suggest a blind buy. But it's great, great filmmaking. And the commentary is terrific.

Those are both excellent points.

Hopefully the Magnolia release will have good special features.

I was looking for The Naked Kiss thanks to a recommendation from some posters here, but my B&N did not have it in stock, so I asked them to order it, along with Shock Corridor. I'll pick those up along with Scanners next weekend, and hope I have the restraint to leave it at those three.

Thieves' Highway
Green for Danger


Don't have a 5th yet, but I did order 3 DVD's in the sale that should be here hopefully tomorrow. 1 of those might be #5. If his work holds up, I can see Suzuki's Youth of the Beast or Melville's Le Deuxième Souffle occupying that 5th slot.

I loved Green for Danger, one of the funniest final lines I've seen in a movie. As for Youth of the Beast and Le Deuxieme Souffle, you should enjoy both of them if you're a fan of those directors.

If we're making wishlists for October, then I'll throw in a nomination for Jacques Tourneur's Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon. Since we're getting Out of the Past released from Warner Archive apparently in the near future, let's put another Tourneur film in the fold for good measure. Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon has a French Blu-ray release that is supposed to be pretty good, so I know that a high definition transfer is out there.

Of course, The Vanishing cannot be upgraded soon enough. I'm really looking forward to replacing my DVD.
