This would be a bad call in terms of Criterion's relationship with libraries and educational facilities. Libraries are a good source for people who do not necessarily have the income to buy classic films, and the Criterion DVDs are an invaluable resource in that regard.

As sad as it seems, I interpret Criterion's move away from Dual Format as a sign that they've given up on Blu-ray as a viable replacement for DVDs. Many people are simply moving on from DVDs to streaming or to nothing.

I can understand that. I can def see how some would be underwhelmed by it. That's kind of my reaction to the Bergman's I've seen.

I might hold on to mine because of the different artwork. Maybe its value will increase? Of course the value could also decrease because the film will now be available from Criterion again.

The only real problem I have with this idea is that many classrooms in both the high school and college settings still only have DVD players, and going to blu exclusively would mean that teachers would have a much harder time finding ways to show Criterion films -- many of which have a great deal of educational value -- in the classroom.

My film club screened it and it wasn't a massive hit. I would like to try it, if only for Marcelo, handsome devil

I think Criterion (or someone else) mentioned a while back that schools, libraries and others are stuck with the more-dominant DVD equipment, so going blu-only would shut them out of purchases to no-one's benefit (Criterion makes less sales, the schools/libraries don't get the films or the extensive supplements, which can be used for teaching, etc., etc.). What the combo packs were meant to do was help those who haven't gone blu to smooth the transition, but it didn't work quite as planned. (Also, some sets are monsters in size as a result.) Criterion explained: http://www.criterion.com/current/posts/3195-re-format

Wow! What an amazing month. Highlight for me is My Darling Clementine. First month in long time that I want them all. Cheers Criterion, keep up the good work

I don't think that this is necessarily the case. Instead, I think it is simply a cost/benefit issue for Criterion. They probably sold fewer of the dual format releases than they did of the DVD releases and the separate blu releases, so they are maximizing their sales.

Thumbs up

Plan to get ALL of these, but I'm trying to decide whether to get them on street date or wait till B&N's November 50%-off Criterion sale for 'em...

I guess I'm the only one super-excited about f for fake? Orson Welles, tremendous film, amazing bonus features. Doesn't get much better.

I'm excited for La dolce vita (I need more Fellini in my collection), but that's about it. I watched Playtime earlier this year and it didn't do too much for me.

My Darling Clementine - The month's highlight for me! My wife and I have been really loving getting into John Ford the last few months! Perfect timing for us.

F for Fake - We've also been catching up with Orson Welles too. In fact we watched Macbeth just yesterday! This is also a must-buy for us.

La Dolce Vita - This is a very likely buy. We've not seen it or any Fellini yet. We have Amarcord on the way...

The Complete Jacques Tati - I think we want to try before we buy if we can manage it with this set.

The Vanishing - This is a pass from us.
