The film, however, is fantastic as far as I'm concerned, jw! If you have any kind of idea of just how crazy one person can become over religion (or any obsession, for that matter) then you will appreciate the movie, I think. Brad Dourif's performance is unparalleled in Wise Blood. I'm hoping that I can get him to autograph my copy of the DVD when he's at Rock & Shock in Worcester, MA this year.
This film is hilarious and is a must see. Harry dean Stanton is also worth noting, as a not so blind broke preacher no less.

Looking back at Criterions past releases, I remember being interested in these two releases when they were first anounced: Children of Paradise and Les Visiteurs Du Soir. I never really heard much about these once they released so kinda just forgot about them. Anyone seen these and can give an opinion? Worth a watch?

It's frustrating, because the film is essential.

you happen to be wrong about this.

Heaven's Gate, btw, may not be the best film of the genre, but for someone posting on the CC thread who loves artful films and is wondering "what is (or can be) so great about westerns?" this is not a bad place to get a little exposure

I rewatched Seconds last night.

The first time that I saw the film was sometime last year. I remember not liking it at all because I don't think I was buying the idea of being reborn. That being said, I rewatched it last night and I really enjoyed it, especially due to the ideas that it presented forth. Not to mention, I felt extremely paranoid watching it.

The idea of having a second chance at life is always a fascinating one, especially when you have a (somewhat) clear grasp of the world and you're not going in cold turkey. Unfortunately, as we see in the film, we have to be careful what we wish for because we may just get it. I also can't help but feel that "The Company" represents a dictatorship ideology whereas you follow their mandated rules or you ultimately become extinct.

Wow!

It's funny because I watched Zazie Dans Le Metro earlier tonight and I consider it the worst Malle film from what I've seen (Atlantic City, Au Revoir, Black Moon, My Dinner With Andre, Pretty Baby), as well as one of the worst films that I've seen in recent memory. I could not tolerate the wacky story, the annoying characters, or the editing style. However, a little while later, I watched Elevator to the Gallows and I consider it his best and a personal favorite of mine now.
his best? really? I thought I had your sensibilities (taste in film) figured out and I wouldn't have thought you'd put any other Malle films above Au Revoir Les Enfants.

I like it a lot, but I think that the fact that it was Malle's first film shows a bit.

I really, really, really, really, really love Au Revoir Les Enfants. It is an incredibly heartbreaking film. This one, on the other hand, will keep you on the edge of your seats until the very end.

To be honest, it's really hard for me to say what one is the better one. I think this may have the slight upperhand from a subjective perspective, but I think both are great.

I too consider Elevator to be his best, but I love Zazie too, so what do I know!

Elevator to the Gallows is my favorite Louis Malle film by a long mile. Jeanne Moreau is stunning in the movie, and the improvised Miles Davis score is for the win.

There seems to be more and more discussion about Malle's films. That's good!! Hopefully, we'll get Elevator, Lacombe, Lucien, or maybe even Atlantic City (haven't seen it.. heard great things!)

Thinking about blind buying Picnic at Hanging Rock. Is there that much of a difference between theatrical vs directors? (Like 8 minutes shortened?) Anybody seen both? I read there may be a Japan import coming out soon that may have the original cut, but it is unclear if thats accurate and may not even be in HD. Any thoughts? Should I even bother seeking out the import or just pick up the Criterion?

Oh man! Don't get me started on the scene with Moreau walking through the streets as Miles Davis' score plays throughout.

It's always playing on cable, so it should be easy to find.

last week was a good week for movies for me!

Pierrot Le Fou - watched it twice, actually.
Au Hasard Balthasar - definitely good.. I'm sure it will take (at least) another viewing for its greatness to resonate with me
Dr. No - a lot of fun!
Nebraska - liked it a lot... Alexander Payne recorded something for Il Sorpasso. I wonder if any of his films would be candidates for a CC release. some of his earlier films have lousy blu-rays.

After revisiting L'Eclisse last night by way of the outstanding new Blu-ray, I'm thinking that L'Avventura cannot be upgraded soon enough. I hope that a high definition transfer sees the light of day later this year or early next year.
