I do plan to grab Altman's The Long Goodbye when it is released this fall, because of the noir aspects of that movie, but I'm not compelled to delve farther than that into Altman's catalogue at present. I may be missing out, but I've got bigger fish to fry in terms of releases on my wishlist.
I've seen several Altman films by this point and none can top 3 Women for me. I can't recommend it enough.

Is The Long Goodbye a blind buy for you? If so I feel tempted to warn you it's not really your common hardboiled movie...

Just re-watched Margaret, forgot how awesome it is. What a great contemporary Criterion that would make!...

Thanks to everyone that answer my question from earlier today. I guess Persona it is, I'll get Insomnia in the November sale.

I've had a BR player for about 6 weeks, and got the following Criterion between Amazon and the BN sale:
Amazon:
Godzilla
Videodrome
Naked Lunch
BN:
Scanners
Badlands
Days of Heaven
Brazil

My wife and I are already making a plan for November, which will probably include all Linklater, Repo Man, F for Fake, La Jete and Solaris for starters. The Brood also, if it is out yet.

It would be nice to have the original 3-D restored, but Steve Guttenberg just wasn't funny in it. Period.

My L'eclisse came in the new 3 disc keep cases. Are these going to be the standard now for Criterion for the dual releases? any idea?

Very underrated film - didn't it have load of problems with the release and was shelved for years?

As my first post on the forum I'd like to share my B&N sale haul with all of you.

It took three weeks for them to arrive all the way to Finland and they're all in pristine condition, except for a tiny dent in The Great Beauty but it's not distracting so I'm happy for that.

I saved all spring for these babies and now that they're finally here I'm super pumped to watch them. Thankfully it's my day off from work today so you know what I'm doing all day!

I still have the Jacques Demy set on the way but I was too excited so I had to share this with all of you already. So here's the haul:

It's always been in a 3-disc keep case as far as I'm aware. Some titles, like Scanners and Picnic at Hanging Rock (especially as it has a book) came in digi-packs (and were released after L'eclisse). Of the last dual releases that are upcoming, they may all be keep cases, but I guess we'll only find out when people get ahold of them!

My understanding is that the 3 disc cases were relatively new? My Nashville, Great Beauty and Persona were all digipaks.

My friend recently ordered Great Beauty and Persona from B+N and they were in 3 disc keep cases.

I'm still not taken on the disc behind booklet and the splitting (DVD+BD one side, DVD the other), but I can certainly appreciate the feel and the slightly wider spine.

Yes, I believe they are, but I don't think L'eclisse ever came in a digi-pack (it's only been out a month or two). I could believe they're changing the digi-packs to keep cases as they print new runs though (bound to be cheaper for Criterion if nothing else), and in a similar way they are almost certainly going to phase out the dual-formats in a similar manner - no or few orders for more, instead replacing the new runs with keep cases.

So from that perspective, there's a greater chance the last of the dual-formats due out next month will be keep cases - but equally the first print runs might have used digi-packs. I guess it depends when Criterion put in the manufacturing orders for/designed the new releases!

I tend to disagree. It's certainly different but it does have noir aspects. I'm a big noir fan and I'd put it up there with some of the best.

With a possible Watership Down BD including Plague Dogs now that Criterion is experimenting in animation with Fantastic Mr Fox's BD re-issue, how about these which need an American BD since neither had an American DVD:

And here's another early Peter Jackson movie that can be good for Criterion besides Braindead:

Wow! I didn't know about this film! And it is Peter Jackson??
Hard to believe!
Just saw the trailer, but I doubt this would be a Criterion material, seeing their releases.
Gandahar is qualified though!

By the way, the Fantastic Mr. Fox was more of a release to complete an Anderson collection that I understand they... love, than experimenting with animation releases.
But Watership Down could be the one that shows that they have an interest in animation too..

Any chance of Criterion upgrading Onibaba to Blu? It's currently only available for those with Region B or Region Free players.

Summer Hours (blind - big fan of family dramas and Jeremy Rennier and Binoche)

Now still humming and hawing over the Cassavetes set. So here is what I am thinking of:

Cassavetes set

Vs.

3 single releases with thshort list being Night of the Hunter, Late Spring (have Tokyo Story but have not watched it yet), Scanners, Close Up, (open to other suggestions). Was looking for Yi Yi and Nasville but the location I will be at does not have them. A few things to note:

- Fav directors in the collection for me is Kieslowski and the Dardennes brothers
- Fav actor in the collection is Binoche
- I HATE dated /theatrical acting so please no Kurasowa films that use that (but I LOVE High and Low).
- Only a so so fan of Samurai flicks.

Thanks in advance!
I would pick Late Spring, Cassavetes, Yi Yi in that order.
