They're both great, but The Third Man is one of those movies where I wouldn't change a single frame. Touch of Evil is brilliant, too. I still can't accept Charlton Heston playing a Mexican but, oh, that opening tracking shot!!

Easily his weakest film. Next would probably be Only Lovers Left Alive. Still a good film and certainly worth going out of your way to see in theaters.

To continue the non-Criterion talk that is apparently restricted, I just finished Nymphomaniac Volume 1.
Damn. I have just watched one of my favorite scenes in all of my cinema viewing career. I assume which scene is obvious for those of you who have seen it. Lars has in recent months taken an elevator to the highest few ranks of my all time favorite directors. And this is without having seen many of his most lauded films. Edit: Putting in Volume 2 now... Has anyone heard if Criterion has the rights to the Dardenne Brothers newest film TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT? I would love them to release their entire oeuvre but Criterion has released only three on Blu-ray which I'm grateful for:-) It's being released soon in the UK but I could hold off if Criterion plans on releasing it next year.

Since we are off the Criterion Collection subject, I thought that I would let everyone know that the region-free Arrow Academy blu-ray of Andrzej Wajda's Ashes & Diamonds [1958] is currently on sale on Amazon U.K. It's listed as being 4.66 British Pounds, but before completing my order, it was discounted to 3.88 British Pounds. When I completed my order, my final price was $12.16 (a bargain, truly.)

Thread drift is a common occurrence in forums. There are over 108,000 replies in this thread, so yes, there's going to be discussions that aren't about Criterion itself on occasion. But such tangential discussions typically have some relevance to Criterion, as they talk about filmmakers represented in the Collection, or they springboard off a discussion about Criterion releases (eg., talk about the relatively recent release of Red River and the announcement of My Darling Clementine leading to a discussion of Westerns). Even if they don't have any obvious connection to Criterion itself, they tend to peter out after a while, or circle back around to Criterion. So it's all good. Granted that someone looking for specific information or discussion regarding a Criterion title might have to wade through a lot of irrelevant discussion, but that would be true even if every single post was about Criterion and nothing but Criterion. That's life in the forums. |

Back in the day, there used to be arguments about whether Amazon UK or some other UK e-tailer (whose name escapes me at the moment) was the better dealer. Not-Amazon offered free shipping, even to the US, but did not remove the built-in VAT. The larger the order, Amazon's VAT removal + shipping ended up being better than Not-Amazon's VAT inclusion + free shipping. On edit: After some checking, Not-Amazon turns out to be blackstar.co.uk. That conversation has happened regarding purchases direct from MoC, don't know anyone else that has ever offered free transatlantic shipping (doesn't mean it didn't happen). Zavvi only charges .99 per title (pounds that is), but no VAT reduction. I think Arrow might offer free shipping too, but it's been a while.

AmazonUK removes VAT from the price if the products are shipping to The States. (Edit - As usual Jayembee said it better than I could before I could.) Last edited by shadedpain4; 08-03-2014 at 10:38 PM. |
