Also caught up with Leon Morin, Priest last night, which I was less taken with, but still very much enjoyed for the central relationship between Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Paul Belmondo. However, I do feel as though the other elements of Riva's character's life (namely her relationship with her daughter and Sabine) could have been more fully fleshed out.

That being said, here's how I'd rank the seven Melville films I've seen:

1. Le Doulos
2. Army of Shadows
3. Le Samourai
4. Le Deuxieme souffle
5. Bob le flambeur
6. Le Cercle Rouge
7. Leon Morin, Priest

Hoping to catch up with the two Melville's on Hulu Plus as well as Two Men in Manhattan and Un Flic this weekend. Any thoughts on these films?
Two Men in Manhattan and Un Flic are on the lower rung of Melville's canon, in my opinion, but they're still excellent movies. Two Men in Manhattan looks splendid on Blu-ray, and it's a great love letter to film noir and New York City. The use of what looks like toy models annoys me during a pivotal scene in Un Flic, but the movie is otherwise great (and models are cooler than computer effects anyway).

Leon Morin, Priest is so underrated. It achieves a great balance of cerebral discussions and engaging plot developments.

I'm at Fox Theatre here in Atlanta right now waiting for Double Indemnity to start. Woo hoo!

Between this and the Blu-ray of Out of the Past, I'd say that this is a solid week.

In fact, the only way that this could get any better would be for Criterion to announce In a Lonely Place and an upgrade of The Killers versions.

The only thing Criterion has publicly stated is that the Eclipse label is not dead and there will be more releases. I doubt that there will ever be an Eclipse release on blu; that would tend to contradict the raison d'etre of the label (but I could be wrong ). There are a number of films that were released on Eclipse that have HD transfers available that I could see (and def hope) being released as part of the Criterion Collection proper. For whatever that's worth.

Now that I have paid for my membership I just got a 15% off coupon. My question is this: do the coupon percentages always vary for members or are they normally 20%?
If my experience is any indication, I would guess that you waited until after your trial membership expired before renewing. (Had same thing happen after I decided to wait a while before renewing: down to 15% coupons, never went back to 20%.)

Try calling up the 800 number on the member card, explain you should be getting 20% member email coupons, not 15% non-member ones, good luck understanding their canned responses to your question (I was sure I'd wasted a phone call and 15 or 20 minutes of my life), see what happens. Next time around you too could be back to 20%-ers.

Does that mean that it could be released by Criterion too?
I sure hope so! But if they don't announce it before the Network release, I'll probably just pick that up.

People dancing was Il Sorpasso. But go ahead and ignore this post too.

I understand they dance in the bar during the film, but nothing about that scene seemed familiar in regards to the drawing.

By the way, wasn't the film already announced prior to the drawing coming out?

Default Dazed and Confused

Believe it or not, but it took me a little over a month to finish watching Dazed and Confused along with all of the supplements. I just finished it tonight ... and loved all of it! Having grown up in a small town and graduating from high school 3 years prior to when this movie was supposed to take place, I could relate to just about everything in it. I appreciate Richard Linklater trying to keep all the props, clothes and music as close to authentic as he could. This might have been filmed in Texas, but it resonated with me all the way in the upper midwest too. It's so good!

With as long as it took me to get through this film, in a way I'm not looking forward to football season coming up, as I'm a big fan and there won't be much time for movies on the side ... especially the feature-laden Criterions. I suppose it's a good problem to have.

No, released end of April, so announced in mid-January, after the drawing.

That said, I suppose I'll have to watch it this weekend, been itching to lately.

I'm pretty sure that at the Wexner talk two years ago they talked about upgrading some of the movies from the Eclipse series to blu.

I'm hoping the year long delay means the next (and all future) Eclipse set is released in blu. Upgrading the current Eclipse sets to blu would be a dream come true! Especially the Malle documentary set.

Thanks! You are correct, that was exactly what happened because I had read that my membership would automatically change to a paid one after the trial one expired, unless I cancelled. Instead it was just cancelled.
I have sent an email and I'm waiting for the response, but I will call if that doesn't work.

I think I remember hearing Raymond Bernard's Les Misérables being talked about having a mainstream Blu ray release.

From where?? Just checked Amazon out of curiosity and it's listed there currently at $139.97 through a third-party. Which made me feel only marginally better for having panicked, when it went oop last year, and shelling out close to a hundred bucks for it when the price on the remaining Amazon stock sky-rocketed. Has it's redeeming qualities but it's not the title in my collection that I would have anticipated being my most expensive (non-set) purchase.

It's possible you were the person I was bidding against. I tapped out at $50 though. I'll stick with my Studio Canal release.

Hey guys, my Barnes and Noble order finally came, beautifully and carefully packaged yet for some reason when I picked up my copy of the Blob a big piece of plastic on the top of the case broke off in my hands. Should i contact B&N or Criterion for a replacement case?

It sucks cause I live in Australia and apparently Criterion's site don't do international orders?
