"It Happened One Night" may be released region-free, subtitled in several languages, and by Sony in Europe.

A definite must-buy for me.
Yessssss! You made my day. I will def be picking up Blanks set. Lightning Hopkins is one of my favorite blues guitarists along with Hound Dog Taylor & Elmore James. Unfortunatly as a 26 year old white girl not many of my friends share my love.

I know there are more but it seems like a lot of the hints actually have come to fruition thus far.
From the New Years newsletter, we have A Raisin In The Sun (possibly, people like to argue it's for The Big Chill), Red Sun, and Wild Child.

From the regular newsletters, Fellini Satyricon and Time Bandits (MovieFanFare).

Criterion on Laserdisc in the 1990's released many mainstream films including Tootsie, The Big Chill, Ghostbusters, The Princess Bride, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blade Runner, Boyz N The Hood, Dead Presidents, The Rock, The Fisher King, The Prince of Tides, Silverado, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Shampoo. When DVD hit BIG the studios did not want to part with these titles and Criterion did not release many big studio films, now it seems to have gone full circle.

IMO Tootsie is a worthy title to be in the Criterion Collection and I feel there is a place for it in the collection. It has been a while since I have watched it, but I do remember loving it and I look forward to getting the Blu ray.

I'm very excited about the Monte Hellman films. I'm so glad his movies are finally getting proper releases.

I don't think Tootsie really fits in the Criterion Collection, but that's just my opinion.

Tootsie has never done anything for me... maybe it's just me, but I never found it amusing when I first saw it 30 years ago, and I didn't find it amusing seeing it again recently on Encore. To each his own, I guess.

I'm definitely in on the Hellman westerns and It Happened One Night.

Interesting that a few people collect according to the AFI top 100.

I had a vote the last time they issued a list. I didn't renew my membership (Most of the benefits are for CA residents) and they've been mailing me ever since.

Nice slate of releases, I will definitely be picking up L'avventura, It Happened One Night, and The Shooting/Ride In The Whirlwind set. The Les Blank box is intriguing, though half the films appear to be streaming on Hulu Plus, so I'm going to stick with those for now.

The big question for me is whether to wait to see L'avventura in glorious high definition or stream it now. I liked La Notte quite a bit and found L'eclisse to be fantastic, so it may be hard to hold off for a few months...

Pretty much my feelings on Tootsie also. Another of those popular titles I've tried to like with repeat viewings but it doesn't click. Very happy for the Antonioni trilogy completion, the Hellman set, and IHON.

Not to beat a dead horse, but if directors like Michael Bay, Lena Dunham, Kevin Smith, and Wes Anderson (and the list goes on...) are allowed in The Criterion Collection, you better believe that someone as great as Sydney Pollack deserves a spot.

We're not likely to see separate issues of titles released in Dual Format until the stocks have dwindled on the DF copies.

You're not alone. I didn't much care for it, either. On the other hand, I haven't seen it in 30 years, and I might give it another shot.

It Happens one Night is an American Classic imo def 100% safe blind buy folks.

I haven't seen Tootsie in over a decade. I remember really enjoying it.

Argh wish I didn't buy the Antonioni "trilogy" from a local store used DVDs super cheap... That reminds me I better watch them all already lol!

L'Avventura is the only Antonioni film I really care about, and enjoy. It is, in my honest opinion, the best of the three. I made the mistake to watch L'Avventura first, it really put a high bar in my expectations of Antonioni films.

Here are the beautiful ladies in one of my favorite scenes of L'Avventura

You had to remind me.

Probably will just bite the bullet and import them all. Certainly quicker than whatever Criterion has in mind.

Guess my wallet was trying to make me rethink that scenario.

I'll be giving it another try being that is supposed to be his best. On a related note, despite the fact that I was not charmed by The Tree of Life like seemingly everyone else who posts on this board is, I'm feeling inclined to give it another look.. maybe next week because my wife is out of town for business.

There were things that I enjoyed about it, so who knows? maybe I'll have a 180 on it.

I thought that the Tree of Life was amazing the first time around, although I really do enjoy Malick and anything Malicky. I can say this, though: Tree of Life benefits from repeat viewings. Give it another shot, you might be pleasantly surprised.
