ha ha! no, on the contrary.. I just did a test on their site... put 2 MoC titles in the cart and it came out to like $17 each. I think for the same titles on Amazon UK, they were $21 each or thereabout

really nice looking site, too. I love the 2 region free MoC titles I have in my collection already. quality and presentation wise, they are every bit as good as Criterion.

I own the Eureka releases of City Girl, Le Silence de la Mer, Sunrise, and Une Femme Mariée. I've only seen Sunrise, but it was a fantastic looking package and nice selection of extras, including another film.

I'll eventually get around to the other ones, but I'm definitely a fan from the one I saw.

yeah, their Lifeboat release looks pretty awesome, too. I know there is a region free version available, but the packaging for the MoC looks so much better... and the supplements seem impressive.

I'm really tempted to order myself a Region Free player, but my wallet begs to differ.

there's like 8 titles I'd want to pull the trigger on right away. that's a preliminary count. last time I explored this possibility, I had a half dozen or so on my list and couple of them have come out here in the time since then. I'd be inclined to just be patient, but I have a feeling that certain titles will NEVER see the light of day in the U.S.

one of these electronic stores that sells the players has a showroom and is somewhere between work and home for me, so if I have issues w/ the player, I can always go right back to the source.

It looks like Criterion won't be releasing Boyhood after all. Paramount has just acquired the rights to all physical media.

Does this change anything? I always assumed someone else would release it first and Criterion would release an edition later.

Hmm... or maybe another Paramount/Criterion release like Benjamin Button?

I'm not glad, I don't feel criterion has to release only art house films or rare obscure classic foreign films. They can release whatever they want and if I like it I'll get it. But I won't judge them by the worthiness of the films they select to put out.

Im not saying that, I just don't think Boyhood is a good film (in my opinion) and feel it would be a waste to release now, when another company can put it out with a decent release, allowing Criterion to focus and put more attention of other releases in their collection - I like few films they have released that aren't arty/obscure - as I said, I just don't think Boyhood is that good a film and other companies can do a decent release.

I watched all the supplements from The Freshman last night and thought it was a great package in addition to the film.

One thing that struck me though was, how come back in the silent era (1910s-1920s), subtitles weren't used? Instead they used panels with text in between shots/sequences, but that is almost like subtitles, except more of a general "idea" that was going on in the scene as opposed to "word for word" dialogue. Perhaps the technology did not yet exist for subtitles back then or maybe it would have been too distracting for audiences.

If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd love to know more.

Yeah, I would, without a doubt, pull the trigger on both Lifeboat and The Lost Weekend right now if I had a Region Free player and knew that they would never see a release date in the United States for a long ways away.

I have a feeling we'll see both within the next year or so, at least I hope we do...

I bet it will be a similar case to the Wes Anderson films and some Universal titles, like Dazed and Confused, that were released by Criterion at a later date.

I have the MoC BDs of City Girl, Sunrise, Tokyo Sonata, Une Femme Mariee, The World, and Mad Detective.

I have to say that Sunrise and City Girl are two of my most prized BDs, and I long for the days when MoC released region-free Blus.

My experiences with going multi-region with DVDs (importing, then seeing titles released or upgraded in North America, not being able to sell my discs, donate, or share with friends) convinced me to stick with Region A or region-free Blus only.

It's very likely that the idea of subtitles didn't exist at this time. Most films that were imported had their original intertitles replaced with English ones.

Imagine if someone decided to get rid of the title cards and put subtitles to really old silent films. Aside it from being totally illegal, even if it was legal to do, do you think that would be unethical? Could scholars/historians/fans of the films figure out, by reading lips, what words were being said, in order to make subtitles for these ancient silent films?

I wonder how different the viewing experience would be?
