I know it's too late now Great Owl, but you should have checked Amazon Canada for the Columbia Film Noir Classics 3. They are selling it for $39.18, although there is currently only one copy left.

An Arkadin upgrade would be amazing tho.
non digipack for amarcord and repo man please

Bluray upgrade for Mr Arkadin with the book

and a rerlease for the man who fell to earth.. maybe its possible since there was only a DVD-R rerelease in the US since the first bluray went OOP.

I've been looking for the Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics III DVD box set for months now and scanning the third party sellers once or twice a week, because that was the only one of the four Columbia Film Noir box sets that I did not own. For some reason or another, this third box set went out of print extremely quick, and the going rate on Amazon and other sites is between $200 and $300 (The MSRP of the set was roughly $50).

This past week, I spotted a "Used - Like New" copy of Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics III on sale from a third-party Amazon dealer for $99. I pounced on this deal right away. The box set arrived in the mail today, and it's in near-perfect condition.

$99 was a little rich for my blood, but, sometimes, if I'm able to do so, I don't mind paying a few extra bucks for a "holy grail" item just so I can stop thinking about the purchase at long last, and stop looking for it online. Now, my OCD tendencies are no longer thrown out of whack by seeing I, II, and IV on the shelf without III. It's good to have all four of the sets.
It's not too much if you think it's worth it! That's my motto. I know all about OCD and "missing pieces" in a set. I used to be addicted to getting all issues of magazines such as Famous Monsters of Filmland, Cinefantastique, and Video Watchdog.

Not to be rude but that really isn't OCD, its just obsessive behaviour that causes you to act that way towards missing sets.

Unless it takes over your life and you can't manage or live without thinking of the missing item and doing rituals then it isn't OCD - OCD is a term thrown around way to easily and it is frustrating when it is a serious issue for some people.

I don't mean to be rude or the one to say it but it is just obsessive behaviour, not OCD.

If you have been diagnosed with OCD then I apologise but I see it thrown away so easily by people who clearly don't have or understand it.

Sorry!

Wow ! I never realized this was OOP. I do have all 4 volumes (including 3 and 4 which were TCM exclusives). I have extra copies of some of the other TCM exclusive sets. I wonder if any of the others are OOP too.

Congrats on the purchase, Owl!

I feel the same as you... I'm not afraid to pay an inflated price (as long as it's reasonable in my eyes) for an oop item. I did it for all the oop Melville films last year, along with a few others. And I recently pulled the trigger on Last Year at Marienbad (complete with the replacement case), which is the final Criterion oop Blu-ray I wanted.

Thank you for posting this. I used to throw around the term in the past until my best friend was diagnosed with OCD personality disorder and it made me realize how serious the condition is and that me wanting all of my stuff in a proper order just because I like neat things is nothing like OCD. It is a serious condition that completely controls and governs and individual's life, and is really sad to see it's effects.
I'm sorry for adding to the non-criterion talk, I'll end here.

P.S Great Owl I love all of your reviews and suggestions keep them up!

Also, given Lionsgate's lacklustre treatment of Studio Canal titles it would make sense for Studio Canal to gradually relicense the relevant ones to Criterion...
I have the same philosophy, but in dollars ($40, not £40 which is $65). It is a great thought to believe that TMWFE will be re released, a confirmation by Criterion would be better.

I would love to see Ran have a release it should have deserved.

I watched Repo Man a last night and enjoyed it but it seems to be one of those movies that grows on you with repeated viewings. It felt kind of a mix of Robocop and They Live with lots of punk music mixed in. I would recommend for you to rent or try it out on Hulu Plus first before committing to purchasing it. The digipack case is very cherry looking though, it looks like it will glow in the dark by how neon green it is. Coupled with a nice thick book it's definitely a very awesome packaging deal. Like usual Criterion goes the extra mile for collectors of their releases.

So you're saying that as soon as Criterion releases their Blu-ray of Ran, you'll buy the Lionsgate/StudioCanal version?

A Facebook friend tagged me today with one of those "Name 15 movies that stick with you." status posts. I'm not a fan of chain status update trends on that site, but this was one that I could obviously get behind. I didn't bother tagging anyone, but I happily posted my own list.

The Criterion Collection is well represented, of course.

1. Out of the Past (1947)
2. Dr. No (1962)
3. Le Samouraļ (1967)
4. The Maltese Falcon (1941)
5. North by Northwest (1959)
6. From Russia with Love (1963)
7. Double Indemnity (1944)
8. Army of Shadows (1969)
9. Le Cercle Rouge (1970)
10. Casino Royale (2006)
11. Escape from Alcatraz (1979)
12. Stand By Me (1986)
13. Paris, Texas (1984)
14. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
15. Casablanca (1942)

I've seen all but:
Out of the Past
Le Samourai
Double Indemnity
Army of Shadows
Le Cercle Rouge

Stand By Me is one of my all-time favorite films. It may even be #1 for all I know. Haven't gotten all my favorites together and watched them back to back and really thought about it yet. But I've been watching that movie since I was maybe a couple years younger than the kids in the movie. I love it to death.

Escape from Alcatraz is an incredible prison escape movie. That needs a Blu-ray badly!

I just want to spotlight an upcoming performance of the Los Angeles Master Chorale who will be performing as a live soundtrack complete with symphony to the 1928 silent film classic The Passion of Joan of Arc at Walt Disney Concert Hall here in L.A.:

He's got a lot of comedies. Plenty of Woody Allen and Marx Brothers films. Can't go wrong with those.
