Late Spring has one of the best Wikipedia pages I've ever seen. I wish more films got that kind of attention on there.

Has anyone here watched the commentary on Late Spring? I'm not usually a commentary guy, but I love that film so much that I feel like I should give it a spin.

I have to think they have an Ozu announcement on the way soon.

i've listened to the commentary tracks for both Late Spring and Tokyo Story. I have a habit of watching a movie with undivided attention, and then immediately going back to listen to the commentary track as "background noise" while I check my email and surf the web. I'm usually sort of halfway listening to the commentaries, but I occasionally have to stop what I'm doing to hear something particularly interesting, and, in some instances, I put the computer down altogether and listen to the commentary with undivided attention. The commentary tracks for both of these Ozu films are pretty engaging, and they go into detail about Ozu's use of static low-to-the-ground camera locations and such.

They don't have any Columbia movies. The early five films (including Duck Soup) are Universal-owned titles, originally released by Paramount.

Right you are -- that's what I get for posting before my morning coffee. Still, a Marx Brothers set from Crtierion would not be unwelcome.

Someone once asked Criterion if they'll release A Night at the Opera and they replied: We wish!

It's a Warner-owned title, so yeah, it's highly unlikely. They did release it on LD, though, back in the day.

It's just unfortunate Universal owns the best Marx Brothers films. They're content in re-releasing the same half-baked DVD's every 3-4 years.

I'm pretty sure Fat Girl contains my least favorite ending in the Criterion Collection.

It bugged me a little, I wish it wasn't so rushed and was thought out a bit better, either way I think its a great film and the lead girl was phenomenal despite not being a professional actress.

First time?

It feels ridiculously out there, but simultaneously related, given the rest of the film.

Yea, it was a real gut punch! It pretty much swung me from a "want to own" to a "don't want to see this again anytime soon" vibe. I mean I was expecting something to happen but not That!

My friend was telling me how mad this ending made him, so naturally I had to rent it. I assumed that the director had respect for the viewer, given how far she went with the nudity. If she's going to depict these two characters in these situations, then I need to know it's being done for a reason. Giving us an ending as preposterous as that is a slap in the face and makes the content in retrospect seem insulting.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

My copy of Summer Hours is now freezing at the 55 minute mark, despite working just fine in the past. This makes the second Criterion disc to spontaneously fail on me ( the other being Walkabout). Anyone else having similar problems with older discs?

So, who else is so so so pumped for this month's releases? For me, It might be the best releases all year, with both The Innocents (in my top 10 horror films) and Eraserhead (A Criterion copy of a David Lynch film? Awesome!) being must-have titles.

The wait is a long one for sure.

Those 2 seem to be the troublesome titles. There's a thread here about "Summer Hours":

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=247759

I'm afraid to open my "Summer Hours" now -- I've never seen it, so if I have an issue, I will be in limbo. . .

I'll be getting both, as well as Sundays and Cybele, which I have no other means to seeing.

Yes, starting with this month's releases.

I know they axed Digipak and moved back to their custom clear Scanavo cases.
This they haven't done. Not really. First, they haven't "moved back" to the Scanavo cases, because they've always used both kinds of packaging, depending on the individual releases. They were never at any time all-Scanavo or all-DigiPack (well, except for the first nine Blu-ray releases, which were all DigiPack). Second, they're still releasing some titles in DigiPack cases: Eraserhead being a current example.

You're in for a treat with The Petrified Forest, because it's a great early Bogart role.

The Petrified Forest and White Heat are my two favorites of the lot, but Little Caesar is amazing in terms of watching an early role from Edward G. Robinson, who has starred in many of my favorite film noirs. The Public Enemy is a real trip as well. The scene where Cagney rubs a grapefruit in the woman's face is unforgettable. That's no way to treat a lady.
Ray Rice only wishes he had a grapefruit now instead of a fist.

Actually, I'm more excited for Oct-Nov titles. This month my only gotta-have is The Innocents with Macbeth and Eraserhead as I'm pick them up later titles since the following two months are gonna be rough on the bank account.
