Also the film The Skin I Live In, it is Hitchcock's Vertigo in a twisted sci-fi way. It is a great, crazy film.
subtitles for Kes doesn't help. its like English w/ British accents, mixed with Shakespeare and pig Latin.

I've been on this soapbox before, but Talk to Her is a masterpiece through and through.

..and here is the snippet of a review I wrote for The Skin I Live In (spoiler free) when I had the time to craft such things Fellini, you and I caught the same vibe on this one!!

Loss. Obsession. Madness.
Pedro Almodóvar's macabre tale bears many thematic similarities to Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo." The director's oft-explored themes of sexuality and gender identity are added to the mix to create a style that is uniquely and unmistakably 'Almodóvar.' "The Skin I Live In" is an enjoyable film that, while not on par with his best work, is recommended viewing nonetheless.

Music plays an essential role in establishing setting (e.g. the wedding scene) and Almodóvar establishes atmosphere by utilizing a Bernard Hermann-like score to great effect. All sounded great through my 5.1 HT set up.

I'm watching it now and I think it is absolutely terrible.
Couldn't agree any more.
Awful film.

For those who enjoyed Kes you might like The Selfish Giant(it's on NetflixUS).

Some are very critical of Criterion's cover artwork but they do a good job for the most part. Especially when compared to work like this from other studios:

I didn't know that there was a re-release coming up for this film. I won't argue that it is a better film than Talk To Her or Y Tu Mama Tambien, but this is my favorite movie of this century.

new transfer?

More than likely just an alternative cover.

I personally have not seen it but my online Film club screened it last year and it was a massive success, one person even picked Yi Yi as his Number One Chinese Film EVER !

Question; It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World featured some excerpts of celebrities talking about the film sourced from AFI's 100 Years... special. Is there any particular reason that stands out why similar selections of clips from the special(s) can't be included upon Tootsie and It Happened One Night (both of which were on two seperate lists, both films overall and comedies specifically)?

Does anyone think it might be worth emailing Criterion to see if they could be included? I can't imagine AFI is too stingy with the rights to these clips.

Hey guys, it's been a very long time since I read/posted in here. Been moving around the country, living away from my parents, and not having any extra money to spend on blu rays! Decided if I kept away from this forum, the temptation wouldn't be as strong.

Anyway, I'm in Denver, and tonight at the SIE Film Center they are playing a "brand new digital restoration" of Alphaville. Excited to go and see it in a theater. Do you think this means it will get a blu ray upgrade?

I saw it at the Music Box Theater in Chicago (which isn't too far from you if you're in Peoria) during the summer. The transfer looks great. I hope that something is forthcoming, but who knows? Criterion does not currently own the rights.

It's one of my favourites of this century. Fantastic film that gets better with repeated viewings. There just so much there! I have yet to see anything else by Yang though.

Arrow has a flash sale and I was about to buy it, but I'm really interested in the isolated score+effects track that the Criterion DVD has and thought that it may include it in a future Bluray upgrade.

since 2 and 3 disc cases from criterion are avaible i decided to double dip on a lot of arrow / UK blurays if criterion decides to upgrade their releases. and just add the UK disc to the criterion release ;D

I watched a classic Sergio Leone film last night called Once Upon a Time in America. I'm wondering why there is no Leone in the Criterion Collection? This was a 4 hour epic that I had only seen once before when I was much younger. It's an amazing film. I saw Leone's name mentioned in the "explore" section on the Criterion site but no films were listed.

This would be a perfect film for the collection!!!

It's probably just a matter of time. I would love a Criterion package of The Killers (1946) and The Killers (1964), just like the one that is out on DVD.

It's owned by Warner...they'd be the ones to put out a deluxe director's edition, which DOES appear to be coming for 2015...

Criterion should release a Leone film and include a commentary by Tarantino.
