I've probably asked this before but on the small chance anyone here knows: is there a possibility of an Onibaba upgrade from Criterion? They released it on DVD and Kuroneko (from the same director) on Blu-ray. The only Blu release currently available is Region B locked.

Persona definitely has the advantage, but Eraserhead is a close second.
I think the degree of light usage while filming plays a part in how well these films look when they are restored. Certain things stand out more from others, which is the case with these two examples. |

This is easily best it has ever looked but there is a change in one scene that if you know the film you will think something has gone wrong. I don't think its a glitch but either someone at cc goofed or Lynch uncharacteristically altered the film. I searched around and there is mention of it at several forums. hopefully there is some sort of clarification from them about it

That is just the thing there is no hiccup and the disc and audio play through. It is just that the color is gone. if youve familiar with the film it goes white while the cc just cuts to black, it looks as if it were either intentional or was an error in the actual master they pressed to disc.

And speaking of Japan.... I peruse Amazon Japan every so often searching for films on blu that aren't released elsewhere. I'm a Hammer Studio fan and THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN is being released in Japan in two weeks and I'm going to import (along with THE STRAIGHT STORY). I'm also a big fan of Criterion's Eclipse dvd sets and one of my favorite is WHEN HORROR CAME TO SHOCHIKU. Well, I just discovered this awesome dvd set with small plastic figures from each movie! I'm thinking of importing just for the collectables as the dvd set is 8,353 Yen which is $76 plus shipping. Even better, all four movies are being released on Blu-ray December 2 of this year!! Without English subtitles I'm afraid. But it makes me wonder why Criterion didn't release these on blu? Did they not have the rights to the same masters? Or did they feel this niche set just wouldn't appeal to many of us Cinephiles? Maybe Criterion should release these niche sets on Blu-ray but in limited quantity like Twilight Time. I've just published a review of GENOCIDE one of the films in the set to my horror blog (This Dark Exegesis). What was going to be two paragraphs turned into two pages because the story is so crazy and disjointed (but damn interesting!) that I just kept going. As with all of my writing I reveal spoilers so please caveat lector! |

The Innocents was INCREDIBLE. I absolutely loved it!
I think this is better than The Uni invited - only comparing due to similar themes and such, I loved both but this was so much better and found ti more eery and haunting. Omg, can't wait to re watch ![]() Quote:

Finally watched Picnic at Hanging Rock for the first time, and I'm glad I waited to see this for the first time on Blu. The transfer is a BEAUT.
What a intriguing, confounding, and tragic story. So beautifully and hauntingly well told. The composition, cinematography, and score create something equally dreamy and deeply unsettling. A definite purchase sometime down the road. |

Are there any other gothic horror films in collection other than Beauty and the Beast, The Uninvited and The Innocents?
Not sure if I'm missing any I already own, mostly looking for blurays but if there's and Criteriom DVDs that fit this genre that's great. Had quick search and apparently Rosemarys Baby fits that genre? Same for Rebecca? I thought Rebecca was a Romantic film? Looks like Masters of Cinema has the biggest gothic horror films, Nosfaratu etc Thanks! Last edited by Polaroid; 09-21-2014 at 08:40 PM. |
