I already said this:

not saying that it can't be true, but I don't know how other people store their movies and I need not qualify how unreliable the internet can be, so there's no need for anyone to panic.

and I also already said this:

maybe they haven't commented because it is a non-issue? or because no one at Criterion who reviews or owns the movies has confirmed it to be a real problem.

key phrases are "not saying it can't be true," "no need for anyone to panic," and "maybe."

Seems like people are afraid their discs are more tainted than once thought.

On the other hand, I posted my thoughts about Symbiopsychotaxiplasm earlier this morning, so if anyone wants to see something unusual, skip back a couple pages (or three). Har har.

Octagon - just curious, how many of your discs have a problem?

Last night M would load to the menu but completely froze my player (with a magenta screen, of all things) when I tried to play. I ejected it, got back to the menu and tried to start at various chapters with no luck.

I was going to try it again today (and also switch my region-free player back to region A so I could check it in there as well) and check a few others before saying anything.

I will be checking mine this weekend and can report back if needed. But to be honest, I am in the tin foil hat club. I don't believe in conspiracy theories, I just like flexible shiny headwear.

Yes, that's what I thought too. Amazing. Stupendous. Love this movie. Bring it on, Criterion.

Or maybe a comment from Criterion on the state of their Blu-ray discs... they played fine back then, but now, you don't want to look.

Well, a big part of how they select their movies has to do with whether the studios that own them will license Criterion the rights to them. For example, Warner doesn't like to share their toys, so barring a miracle, The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon are out of the question.

Halloween and Bram Stoker's Dracula were two films that Criterion had actually brought out on laserdisc back in the day. But they never got the rights to release them on DVD. I wouldn't count on Anchor Bay letting Halloween go to Criterion.

Maybe it's just me, but for me, Bram Stoker's Dracula is the most hilariously awful telling of Dracula on film ever. It doesn't shine a candle to Hammer or Lugosi. I was laughing hysterically almost every scene and I wasn't even with company to share in them with (which always boosts the amount of laughs).

I really do feel that Coppola had used his four good films as an excuse to make nothing but complete and total garbage for forty years or so.

I think this might have 'Charade' written all over it. Charade was a title that never really hooked me until I saw it in HD. Then it just all seemed to fall together.

Don't Look Now is not my favorite Roeg film. In fact, I didn't really think that much of it but I could see it benefiting immensely from a better presentation.

I have the region B Optimum release and let's just say there's more than a little room for improvement.

Of your options, the bolded one is correct for me. Back in early 1988, after buying a laserdisc player and a few discs, I bought copy of Criterion's Blade Runner, partly because of the extras but mostly because it was the only home video release of the movie in widescreen. After that, I started picking up Criterion LDs for a lot of classic movies that I liked, because Criterion was at the time doing state of the art home video releases of a lot of great movies. I used to joke at the time that Criterion was the home video equivalent of the Harvard Classics book series.

Based on what they released that I was familiar with, I decided at some point to start picking up titles that I unfamiliar with. I disliked very few of them, so I decided to start collecting all of their titles (never did actually accomplish that). My interest in Criterion continued onto DVD, and eventually onto BD.
