Countries like to compete. Athletic events, as wasteful and overblown as they are, are preferable to world wars.

Speaking of which, are you active in any Star Trek threads in this forum? If you want to start a new thread on that, we can talk about our favorite things about Trek. I could see myself posting quite a lot. Great Owl or anyone else who wants to join, just let me know.

Not really. I like Trek enough to want to voice some opinions now and then, but not enough to want to discuss things with hardcore fans.

Pretty much what jayembee said. I like the Star Trek Original Series, although I have not seen most of the episodes since childhood, and I like most of the movies, but I never saw The Next Generation or any of the subsequent shows. I wouldn't be able to keep up with the big boys in a dedicated thread.

Wow. Do you have any evidence that the Olympics have led to a reduction in warfare? The modern Olympic era has also been the era of mechanized killing on a massive scale. Not that there is a cause-and-effect necessarily, but I don't think we can call the 20th century a particularly peaceful era, even relatively.

Sort of Criterion-related...

Today, I'm going with a double feature of Day of the Animals (1977) and Dogs (1976), because I'm in that frame of mind for watching "when animals attack" horror flicks.

During Day of the Animals, which I just finished watching, I kept wondering where I had seen one particular actor (the crippled NFL player in the movie). About halfway through, I realized that the actor was Paul Mantee, who starred in Robinson Crusoe on Mars.

Like all things involving human behavior, war/peace won't change overnight. There will be overlaps during long transitions.

I believe Altman has always been an influence.

Very true. Also, I love your avatar. I'm a huge, huge fan of 3 Women. Total masterpiece.

One of my film professors believes that There Will Be Blood is a remake of McCabe and Mrs. Miller but I really fail to see any similarities.

Just watched Nashville recently (my first Altman) and loved it. Will have to check out Short Cuts as I absolutely love Raymond Carver as well.

Is Nashville fairly representative of Altman's style? I really enjoyed the rhythm of the film.

I've always thought of Nashville as the quintessential Altman film. Others disagree.

I had a $20 AMZ GC, so it ended up costing me $78....which was about as good as it's going to get at his point....

Yeah, all things considered, that's not bad.

Scary that that's the case, when one thinks about it.

ETA: Huh. Just for the heck of it, I checked if my library had Marienbad, as they didn't used to. And lo and behold, they do have the Criterion DVD. So, at least I can see it again for the first time in a while I wait and decide whether to buy the BD.

From the looks of these releases, I think the Studio Canal Tati set seems pretty much the same as Criterion's in terms of PQ/AQ.
