I adored it after first viewing but for me, it improves on multiple viewings - its a film where you need to be in right mindset and mood otherwise its not as rewarding.

I just adore the score, the visuals, how raw and realistic it feels and SJ blew em away - she was transformed and felt like an alien, she got lost in that role and did;t feel or come across as human, she felt like a lost aline that wanted to be part of us.

But you cant please everyone so no worries if you dislike, and yes the artwork is pretty stunning!

Going back to Metropolis - im googling and there is a 210 Min version the film which must be the one I saw at cinema - so MoC does NOT have the complete version of the film?

I'm going to have to watch this film again...I definitely was not in the right mindset when I first saw this... in fact, I had just come out of a screening of Jodorowsky's Dune moments earlier and rushed to see this film in a nearby theater in NYC on a rainy evening. It was like seeing 2 totally different films, one with talking heads and a constant, rational, logical documentary-style film and then a very abstract, irrational, minimalist, non-talking fiction film. The only thing they had in common was the sci-fi element but going into Under the Skin I had just absorbed 90 minutes of amazing philosophical ideas and history from the documentary film that I was still very much thinking about that movie and didn't care about this one! I'll let you know my thoughts again when I see this again.

I think a lot of MoC releases are on par with Criterion in terms of extras and presentation. I've even double dipped a few times with films they've both released. Never owned Kino's Metropolis but I the Moc gets 5 stars from me

Does anyone here know if they ever said anything about the L'ecclise DVD with the wrong commentary? Have they sent back a corrected disc?

Definitely try again - you got nothing to lose. If you can focus on the film you pick up on so many details and for me the film had so much depth and made me ask so many questions and it played on my mind to this day! - I think if you had just had another film burned into your brain and still thinking of that it is hard to switch and you will be comparing the ideas in both.

Even if you still hate it, attested you've tried in a different mind set?

I made the same mistake though, I saw Stoker and then To The Wonder straight after each other 3 times over 2 days - and Stoker was so incredible for me that I did neglect To The Wonder and it didn't feel as special for me - but when I re watched them separately I found To The Wonder to be better than how I originally viewed it - it was still flawed but i had a greater appreciation for it.

But my god - Stoker is just incredible lol.

Well I have ordered it now, my first MoC film - got ti for free as I had a voucher on eBay account (who knows where from!) - hopefully this will break the ice with MoC and i'll be more excited to get more of their releases! There are a lot I have been eyeing up.

I'll need to buy some more shelves! :P

When deciding between box sets always go with The Big Box. It's big enough to hold all the smaller box sets.

Most of the great silent films are all held by MOC, so you're gonna have to buy some of them eventually anyway to be a full fledged film buff.

I have no problem with silent films I love how theatrical they are - I really want Passion of Joan of Arc - but have been waiting for Criterion to do an upgrade - but if I am happy with Metropolis i'll go for the MoC release which I have heard great things about .

Oh and really want Nosferatu and more of those ones

They also have a few horrors I want theatre only on DVD in collection - so be good to get those

The current most complete version runs to 148 mins (around 5 mins shorter than the film that premiered in 1927). Presumably the extra 2 mins are credits and pre-film, on-screen text introductory explanation. The new found footage is incorporated in to the 148 minutes.

I've never heard of a version of the film (other than a reputed "Director's Cut" mentioned at the IMDb) longer than ~150 minutes. The restored version that was released in 2010, and subsequently released on Blu-ray by Kino (in the US) and MOC (in the UK) is a reconstruction of the film as it was originally released in 1927.

You didn't see a four hour+ version of the film at the cinema. The restored 2010 cut of Metropolis runs to 148 minutes, which is 5 minutes shorter than the 153 minute cut of the film that premiered in 1927. This is the version of the film that is on the Masters Of Cinema and Kino Blu-ray editions of the film (MoC were behind the UK theatrical run too, aka the version you saw in the cinema).

There has been some confusion over how long Metropolis was when it premiered, due to the nature in which film was measured before 24 frames per second became standardised. Please rest assured that the version you saw theatrically a few years ago is the same one that is on the Blu-ray edition of the film.

I wouldn't hold back on JOAN, the MoC disc is real landmark stuff. You'll love the packaging too, it bests anything Criterion have ever done in the lavish stakes.

Yah will defy check Joan out - have been eying it up a lot :P

Im pretty sure I sure a version of the film that was 3+ hours, my sister and her friend confirmed it defiantly was around that time - no idea haha - it was a few years ago so may be wrong but I'm so sure it was longer lol

I've made the purchase anyway so will check it out and see if it is the same - Thanks for the help guys, I know this is meant to be criterion related not MoC

But appreciate the help :P - Ive always wanted this on Criterion but as you guys said, unless they get new footage or extras there is no real point cause i've checked MoC out and it does seem pretty awesome!

Think there is a lot of confusion with run time, had a search and a few others have queried it and for some reason - some sites list there being a 210 minute cut - but I have no idea rofl - so long as MoC release is as complete as it can be then I'll be happy.

Quote:
Runtime: 153 min | 210 min (premiere cut) | 93 min (re-release) | 114 min (1927 cut) | 123 min (2002 Murnau Foundation 75th aniversary restored) | 119 min (DVD edition) (2002 Murnau Foundation 75th aniversary restored) | 80 min (Giorgio Moroder) | 145 min (2010 restored)
Its a phenomenal film and I think everyone should be made to watch it atleast once in their lifetime! also - I do love the animated version of the film that was released (that's how I discovered the film).

On subject of silent films - Criterion does seem a little thin on them - other than the Chaplin films and Vampyr etc what other silent films are worth getting gin collection - I dunno if I'm forgetting obvious ones but be nice to check some others out - preferably Blurays really. I adore Guy Maddin twist on the silent film genre with Brand Upon the Brain though - incredible film.

It is a shame more people are brought up around 'hollywood' films that are shown in Odeon etc because, yes they may be entertaining but I think you get so much more from film that Criterion and MoC offer - if more people watched these films I think i'd be less angry at people! lol - I mean people go cinema without even researching the film and they ruin the experience for others when they realise its not what they wanted - yet they cant even sit back and find some appreciation in the film - mehhh rant over lol

I guarantee you 100% that you didn't see a longer cut than the one that is available via MoC. I guess there's a slight chance that a technical error or something saw the film projected at a slower frame-rate or something, however unlikely, but there is no longer cut out there than the 148 minute one. As another poster puts it on the other Criterion forum the listing of a 205 minute cut is "badly researched and nothing more than a myth".

You want to watch them in their order of release, although the stories are not overtly connected. If you watch them in this order (Blue, White, Red), then the stories have a natural flow, and there are a few minor elements that come across better during each subsequent film.

Not particularly, but it's recommended to watch them in chronological order.

I presume it was a technical error as I have 3 other people who went with me say the same as i have said - also I haven't researched fully and as I said only had a quick search but there seems to be a lot of mentions to a 200+ min version, again I have only briefly looked and not looked into properly.

I did see a thread mention the frame rate so I guess that may be the issue - who knows eh! least I have finally got a bluray copy of the film which should be very enjoyable!

It's not so much that there's no point in Criterion releasing it because of the MoC release. It's that Kino has the rights to the film in North America, so a Criterion release would be highly unlikely.

Chaplin and Lloyd are the obvious ones. Stictly speaking, the Jacques Tati films aren't silents, but they aren't far removed. Otherwise, there's Victor Sjöström's The Phantom Carriage and Carl Th. Dreyer's Master of the House (by the by, his Vampyr isn't a silent film, though many people seem to think it is).

On DVD, there's Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (but there's a BD from MoC, as you know), Christiansen's Häxan, Flaherty's Nanook of the North, DeMille's The King of Kings, and G.W. Pabst's Pandora's Box.

I'm probably missing some titles, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

Thanks - I really want to get Haxan, sounds fascinating, be nice if Criterion id upgrade some of those films

I didn't realise Master of the House was same director that did Vampyr - don't really know much about his work to be honest! will have to check it out

Only seen Vampyr once ages ago so need freshening up on it but mentioned it as a silent film because it had same aesthetics and was quit similar in style (imo) but need to rewatch! Actually would be nice to read th novel they supplied, just don't want to crease it lol!

Criterion DVD's are pretty well priced so I may even just pickup some of those films you listed just so I have them and can watch them but yeah they need to upgrade a few :P!

Doubt you'll regret collecting them, there's quite a nice collection of exclusive titles and the quality of the package/product is equal to Criterion in my opinion.

I agree, this is the most impressive of their lineup in terms of presentation. Amazing release.

So I take it none of you have sent in your L'eclisse dvd? I think I'm just going to send it along with my copy of Walkabout and hope they send me a corrected version back. I usually give my dual format regionA dvds to my uncle who through my collection has turned into quite the film geek!
