It kinda put me off wanting to see more Ozu movies, in fact, since it seems to be widely considered his best besides Tokyo Story. Anyone have any Ozu recs for someone that loves Tokyo Story and doesn't like Late Spring, or am I hopeless? I wouldn't be surprised if I just caught it in the wrong mood or something and would like it on second watch.
I'm a huge fan of Good Morning if you want that Ozu feel in the form of a comedy. It is just a purely joyous film.

I think most the stuff cut from TTOL was family scenes and stuff like that - rather than the experimental creation stuff. I hope we get to see it as it seems so depressing all these beautiful footage hidden away .

The film I am waiting for is A Voyage of Time - The creation sequence was incredible.... give me 3-6 hours of that and ill be in heaven.
Totally share your views.

Speaking of Mallick, here's a trailer of an upcoming film from a Mallick-protegee, about Lincoln's childhood. It has the Mallick style:

It is mind-boggling to think that almost three years ago I was incredibly ignorant to film. I remember posting that I disliked foreign films and what not despite having never seen one. Furthermore, all of my time was devoted to collecting rather than exploring how much is truly available to see. It's a total opposite for me now as a majority of my favorite films are actually foreign.

I could watch a film like In the Mood for Love daily. It is one of the most profound films to ever be made to the point that it continues to leave me speechless time and time again. I really cannot post anything substantive about it either. I will say that I truly enjoy seeing love lost and love found amongst such individuals who are vowing not to practice what they are preaching.
I agree, it's one of the most aesthetically riveting and sensual films I've ever seen.

Any time someone uses that word my followup is:

What is pretentious about it?

Usually I do not get an answer.

Having seen The Tree of Life for the second time, I no longer think the film is too ambitious for its own good. I think its a near masterpiece now and Malick's work is unparalleled. My favorite of his films is still The New World and seeing this film in the Criterion Collection would be a dream.

I guess the only criticism I have of The Tree of Life is probably the underdevelopment of Sean Penn's "adult" character as he rarely talks much in the film. We see him on the screen looking pensive and introspective and emotionally "not all there", yet he never talks to us... and somehow maybe we don't need to hear him talk because we already know about him through his childhood, at least up until he was about 11 or 12 years old as portrayed in the story...but then there is that age gap between then and his current late-50 something age, where we don't know what he did in his life and so forth. And all this time I think this is really Terrence Malick's character and how he viewed his childhood or boyhood at the time.
Awesome to see all this TTOL love. O Malick how I love your movies! We need those new releases asap! TTOL is my fav but Badlands is underrated.

I think in the rumoured/confirmed Criterion releases someone had done, there was a confirmed unknown Mallick release?

Hope it's The Tree of Life. (even the theatrical cut)

It's believed to be The New World because Criterion said they were working with Malick to get another Warner Bros. film out.

oh, this is my least favourite of mallick films.
Though i haven't seen yet To the wonder.

Well, if they do, it would be good if the included both cuts.
The theatrical cut of a film should ALWAYS be the first to be released (and the extended ones should be treated as bonus) and for some films we don't even have that! (Patriot, Amadeus etc.)

* * *

On a sidenote:
Watched yesteday for the 2nd time Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)!
I would LOVE a Criterion of this! It's very delightful!
This year was a missed opportunity since it's its 70th anniversary.

I want to marry Malick and have him all of myself.

I would force him to make me films everyday. We would be so happy together.

If anyone feels the need to pick this up, it's currently in stock at DVDPlanet for the wallet friendly price of $13.08 (with promo code SPOOKY).

It says this is a heavy item with a $2.99 surcharge, but I was able to order it without incurring such a charge.

Any chance Elephant Man might come out next year as a possible Criterion title?

I was quite excited until I found that international shipping starts at $12! Back in the days of DVD I used to order most of my R1s from them -- I'm sure the shipping must've been cheaper then!

Having endured the absolute gushing love fest (for at least the 3rd time) that is had between The Tree of Life and this forum’s members, I do not know how I was ever brave enough to attach the ‘p’ word to this film.

I am looking forward to seeing it again, like I mentioned, but (and it is not just Polaroid) there doesn’t seem to be a soul around here who thinks that the film is anything less than God’s gift to cinephiles.

Lonely is the man who feels that TTOL is about as precious as a Hallmark greeting card.
