The fact we know the War Trilogy is coming hopefully will start a trend to let us see Z and The Human Condition and other great films on BD.
Well, there's at least one DVD-only release from that period that has since been upgraded: Whit Stilman's The Last Days of Disco. The DVD was released in August 2009, upgraded to BD in July 2012.

Yeah, the camera work in Birdman is really mind blowing. Like in Jurassic Park when the the dinosaurs make an appearance. Very impressive stuff.

Also saw Nightcrawler and thought Gyllenhaal was fantastic. For some reason, it wouldn't surprise me if the Academy snub him. They seem to love to do that and this season looks to be a tight race in the male category as usual.

Next on the list, Interstellar.

Caught The Univited and The Innocents over Halloween. Speaking of camera work, there were times in The Innocents that I forgot to follow what was happening because I was so awed at the coordination of camera movement, actor choreography and lighting. What an intense film. Actually, both of them were. I was getting sorta whiny about what looked like gratuitous references to Turn of the Screw in Innocents until that last shot. WOW! Had to have a second slug of bourbon after after that last image.

And, yeah, Interstellar. Does anyone else feel like they'd like to see Nolan move past the story gimmicks he's been using since Following and apply his considerable visual talent to some heftier material?

And was anyone else impressed with the script of Gone Girl? Aside from lingering overlong
[Show spoiler]at the hotel when Amy was in hiding
, I thought it was an incredible script. And I'll join what I guess is a minority in saying that I thought Affleck was perfectly cast and nailed his role.

Well apparently Interstellar is th next 2001! lol (joke of course) but my god reading some of the posts on IMDB is cringe!

Funniest one I saw 'Nice to see Nolan going back to his roots'... UMMM how is this film anything like Following or memento lol.

Im excited to see it, no questions but wish he would go back to his roots as those are his better films imo.

Loved Gone Girl, wasn't expecting it to be how it was and for me its one of my fave film of the year. Even Ben Affleck was ok in it and I hate him!
[Show spoiler]I loved the scene when she cut the other guys throat though, so disturbing and she was like a spider killing its prey
I wish they added an hour or two to the film though, they could have and would have loved that - I did read spoilers so was expecting the twists but there was a few I didn't expect and there were times I thought the twist were gonna happen but they didn't. I really loved Gone Girl and I adore Finchers darker films.

The Innocents is an incredible film, the supplements are great too - love the drama they had with the candles in certain scenes haha! Beautiful film and I'm so glad it didn't contain any cheesey ghost story cliches, it felt so fresh and I found some parts really haunting
[Show spoiler]like the woman standing in the middle of the river in distance

I recommend them to anyone who appreciates films but they can be hard to watch!
The best part of Enter the Void was the opening credits. The film slowly devolved into artistic masturbation. I saw the director's cut.

So glad Criterion passed on it!

Ive only seen extended cut - and I don't mind it being an artistic masturbation :P! I'll join in rofl!

I absolutely love the film and its fine if you dislike cause it isn't for everyone ^^

And yes, the opening credits are incredible!

Since Antonioni is "Direttore del giorno" thought I'd mention that I'm going to see Zabriskie Point tonight at the Belmont.
Quote:
[Show spoiler]After his mod-era romp through Swinging London in 1966's Blow-Up, Italian master Michelangelo Antonioni moved on to psychedelic Southern California for Zabriskie Point, a hallucinatory, impressionistic portrait of America at the height of the hippie counterculture.

After a campus protest turns violent, a rebellious young man from a rich family flees to Death Valley, where he meets a pot-smoking secretary and has visions of the apocalypse.

Antonioni's virtuoso visual sense and feel for landscape are, as always, astonishing; his anti-Establishment indictment of mega-materialist corporate America still seems spot-on.
Screening in a new restoration.
I've always wanted to see this film, though I know nothing about it.

Yes, I was impressed with every aspect of Gone Girl, tbh.

And really, most of the people who complain about Affleck's performance just hate him, and would have complained no matter what.

But I think he was excellent in the role.

Im one of this people, I cant stand him usually - he was only good in To The Wonder cause his character was cold, distant and meant to be a shadow in a way haha.

But no, I think he change my mind a little with this film, I was going in ready to hat him an deb annoyed but I didn't, I left very happy

Can I request that when talking about current films that aren't in the Criterion Collection (recently Gone Girl, Birdman, etc) in this thread, that the conversation be spoilered? I specifically try and avoid threads about current films until I have the chance to see them, and it makes reading this thread super difficult at times.

I know the likelihood of this actually becoming a thread about The Criterion Collection, rather than a thread filled with people who love the collection taking about whatever is on their mind, is unrealistic, but this would at least allow people to read the thread without stumbling over info/opinions of non collection movies they have yet to get a chance to see.

Thanks in advance, and my apologies if I have been guilty of not doing this in the past myself.

I hope I didn't spoil anything, but I too totally lost track of what thread I was posting in.

Will be more careful in the future.

I have never even heard of Nightcrawler until now. I am so far “out of it” when it comes to new releases. I just recently (within the last few months) saw some of the bigger movies from 2013. The irony is that I have been more into film and have probably seen more over the last year than during any other period in my life. I’ve been to the theater one time since fall 2013 and that was to see Alphaville.

Yes, that was an incredible script. I was expecting it to be simply super-entertaining trash, but it managed to be a lot more intelligent than I was expecting and even managed to make
[Show spoiler]Amy a character whose motivations were understandable. In fact, I even LIKED her character in some kind of twisted way, she was wildly entertaining and while obviously her motivations would be totally unacceptable in the real world, I really enjoyed seeing her side of things and was kinda on her side, especially when Neil Patrick Harris looked like he was going to keep her as some kind of secret sex slave. Her murder of him was almost vindicating, not to mention strangely artistic in execution!
Tyler Perry was also surprisingly great in his role, and I loved the way nearly everything in the movie tied into themes of putting on an appearance for the benefit of the outside world. I will definitely be buying this movie when it comes out on disc, it's possibly my favorite yet from David Fincher, and I'm a pretty big fan of his (I have all his movies on bluray besides Panic Room).

I think he is really good at adaptations - he has a few poor films, but even so they are still entertaining. Hard to pick a fave from him though, Loved Curious Case..., Girl with..., Fight Club, The Game, Zodiac etc etc lol - tbh love them all, but of rme his weakest have to be Panic Room and Alien 3.

I had a chance to finish The Tree of Life and see two other CC titles this weekend.

TTOL… I admire this film and I was quite a bit more warm to it than during and after my initial viewing. My opinion, however, is that Malick doesn’t really succeed in conjuring up the kind of sentimentality that he is reaching for. I typically love sentimental, life-affirming, bittersweet, etc. type of movies and I wish this one would resonate more than it does, but for me, the story is a bit too thin. Halfway through, I figured two watches would be enough for a lifetime. By the end, I saw a third watch in my future, but I won’t rush back to it.

Best thing I can say about the film is that the cinematography is the best I’ve seen in any film… ever.

Glad you found some appreciation and I won't force you to like it, it is personal opinions on how a film affects you - I do disagree that it is thin and it really emotionally affects me and I can connect with it. But as I said thats down to personal preferences and options and we all see things differently.

Also it is a very personal film for Malick and it involves a lot of his life and personal stories, so of course it may be hard for others to connect - I think he made it more for himself than anything.

Just happy you found some appreciation because Lubezki's work is pretty incredible.
