It was interesting for me to see a young, pre-accident Takeshi Kitano, and to hear Ryuichi Sakamoto's score (Sakamoto also did the music for one of my favorite anime films, Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise). However, it's something I'll never watch again, so I sold the BD after watching it. I did like Oshima's In the Realm of the Senses and Empire of Passion (too bad there's no BD for the latter), but Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence gets a "meh" from me as well.

Checked for Modern Times @ barnes and noble in the NYC area and cannot find a copy... only one I know of is on hold for someone (have to hope it doesn't get picked up) don't want to order online or I know I will order more that one BD

Beta, you magnificently logical son of a *****. I guess when it comes down to it, I think I'd prefer the 'Having all Criterion Blu's' as opposed to the OOP rule, because I DID just pay $66 shipped for a sealed copy of The Third Man. The difference for me there isn't so much wanting it as a collector (although I'd be lying if I said that wasn't at least PART of it), but because The Third Man is one of my favorite Criterion releases, and I watched it on Netflix. I'm very interested in getting the Criterion because I've read and heard it's superior to the Studio Canal release in basically every way.

I'll add another +1 to the loving Bowie group we've got going, although I do agree with Beta. Not the best actor. He's just so captivating, though, I can't help myself. I feel like Captain Yonoi, I just couldn't bring myself to hate Bowie no matter what.

I wish Criterion would release some of the eclipse sets to HD. I know most films aren't in the greatest condition but at the same time I believe they are using good enough masters. I would be game for upgrading.

Sakamoto, eh? Love his regular stuff and his collaborations with Fennesz and Christopher Willits, might have to check this out just to check out how his film scores are.

Here's how lame I am--the second you said Royal space Force: Wings of Honneamise I suddenly bumped Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence onto my "must get asap" list.

I loved the interview with the producer, he provided great insight into the making of the movie and Kubrick's work ethic.

I think that is a bit harsh, my friend. True...he's not an actor by trade, but I think his years of doing stage shows has seasoned him a bit and he's not a bad actor.

I watched it awhile back and never really thought much of it, but after watching it twice on Blu, with all the extras, I really do love it now.

Got it when it first came out. The movie does look great on Blu-ray. Back when it was only available on an awful DVD from Manga Entertainment, some people hoped Criterion would release it. So far, though, they don't seem that interested in animation.

Sakamoto's score for Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence seemed a bit out of place for that type of film, but it did make the movie even more unusual. I'd classify MCML as an interesting experiment that doesn't quite succeed. I don't think there's really anything else quite like it, so it's at least worth a rental. Sakamoto also acts in the film, but I think he's probably better as a musician.

Since Criterion has now done a few United Artists pics, I would love to see the original Manchurian Candidate get the royal Criterion treatment!
