Never seen the film. Apparently there is a digital version coming soon. So I’m gonna just grab that until the Criterion drops. If it’s true.

The Criterion release is likely to feature the newer (revisionist) color grading that was present on the French and German releases. The colors on the FR and DE are muted and desaturated to give it a more bleak noir-ish tone. Many seem to believe it's an attempt to mimic the atmosphere of Fincher's Zodiac (which came out after Memories of Murder's initial release, but before it's new color grading).

Well, there is the revisionist AR issue - as comes up here from time to time (most recently, about seven pages back).

Mainly I'm hoping for a new disc for The Host. Magnolia's disc came out in the first year or two that Blu-rays were released and the encode has not aged well, not to mention overblown contrast: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x...2&l=0&i=6&go=1

Yeah, the grading on the NEON re-release trailer does look suspect. I'd hope Criterion would be able to do their own CC for the disc.

Refresh my memory since I can't remember if the Criterion.com changed their procedure.

When itmes have been put in the cart recently do most say Ships within 1 Business Day or has it defaulted to 2-3 days since the last website update?

I know in the past right before the FLASH SALE went live the Ships within ...... label would change to the 2-3 day announcement which is what I'm seeing now.

I still think next week is the more likely date, but tomorrow wouldn't be surprising at all for it to drop, but not sure if they want to compete or piggyback with Amazon Prime Sale and Target B2G1 and BBY Early Black Friday and the ARROW sales.

Mate, these are the things we usually rely on you knowing...

To be honest, I can't remember either. But I imagine Prime Day might be the only reason to skip this week (I can't think other sales would be a factor).

Question about Playtime (1967):

So I see that all the older versions of the film are in 1.85:1 but why is the newer Blu-ray in the boxset 1.78:1? I'm pretty sure this is an enlargement or is that the original aspect ratio? I don't know if movies are originally in 1.78:1 or not so I don't know if Playtime (1967) was intentionally that or not. I'm very surprised that it's 1.78:1 but I don't know if that was the true ratio or if that was something the restoration or Criterion changed.

Sometimes films that are in 1.85 are opened up to 1.78 on blu-ray. Warner does this a lot. They aren’t “enlarged” per se, it’s just the matte adjustments are different so that the picture fills the TV screen and you see a tiny bit extra picture, and because the difference is only 0.07 it’s not considered by many to be a huge deal.

Thank you! I'm glad it's open matte and it reveals more detail then.

With the artist passing away, I wonder if we will get a New Years drawing this year.

Reminds me of an old joke:

Patient: How bad is it, Doc?
Doctor: Well, you’re very sick and you have six months to live.
Patient: Thanks, Doc, but if you don’t mind, I’d like to get a second opinion.
Doctor: OK. You’re ugly, too.

The original AR is 1.85:1.

The most important technical aspect is that it was shot in 70mm, which brings out the incredible detail of so many of the scenes.

Would love to have seen Tati's original cut, which ran 30 minutes longer.

A very special film.
