Haven't seen this, but it sounds good. Looks like it was actually released on DVD via the Eclipse line. Glad they are upgrading some of those.
Would love to see some of their Ozu and Mizoguchi titles get the same treatment.

I'll probably buy the Ascent. Surprised they would release two documentaries in the same month. Interesting that they are releasing Hulu films as well now.

Great month thanks to The Ascent and the Buñuel box.

Never heard of The Ascent, but it sounds fantastic. Definitely in for the Buñuel set as well.

WINGS would’ve been nice on THE ASCENT just so I could dump the Eclipse. But nice! Happy to see the Buneal’s back.

Saw Minding the Gap at the AFI. Not particularly good but I guess I’m getting it anyways. Pretty underwhelming film.

Why are you getting a movie you were underwhelmed by?

I really hope for more Bunuel though!!! (No announcements yet but most likely will happen)

I also bet it was done based off on Delphine Seyrig's death being 30 years ago today (October 15th, 1990) so it's a good tribute to her as this is arguably one of her best works.

It might be questionable for me to come on to 'Criterion' thread to say this, but if you have a reg free player you can get those same exact movies plus 3 other of his classics on a really nice set with a booklet and tons of special features for $60. Distributor is StudioCanal I believe. Highly doubt there will be much difference in the transfer quality.

Probably one of my favorite films under Criterion. Was wishing for a HD upgrade but never thought it was possible.
Dreams do come true!

I'm also intrigued by Minding the Gap. I'm a bit ambivalent to it since it's both a documentary and a newer film. But I think I'll take a chance.

And more Bunuel is fantastic news.

I've been touting that Eclipse set for years as an underappreciated gem (many of them are!) Great to get a restored The Ascent with all the extras, but agree it would have been nice to be able to drop the DVDs. Do you think any chance Wings also gets a standalone BD?

Shrug, who knows. There isn't a massive precedent for Eclipse getting solo upgrades, so I kinda am inclined to thinking not in the near future.

I'll echo what I said on its individual thread, The Ascent is such an awesome film and I'm happy for the upgrade as it gives others a chance to discovery it.

While not enough people check out the Eclipse series, they will check it out with it on Blu-ray.

Seems like they have same restorations, perhaps different transfers? Who knows? They list it as new digital restorations but I hope these films will look different from the StudioCanal Blu-ray a while ago because I didn't heard all great stuff about it (Compression and contrast being the ones that I remember hearing). I don't have a region free player so I can't get the StudioCanal boxset (If I had the chance tbh, I would've bought it long ago, same with Le Cercle Rouge and Breathless).

I hope Criterion will do Eclipse titles on Blu-ray. It would be a dream come true (Well for me and maybe others as well) if A Colt Is My Passport, Daisies, and Mr. Freedom gets a Blu-ray release.
