i think i was right about chungking express going out of print. Amazon.com isn't selling any of them new anymore on blu, just used and new copies from 3rd party sellers which seems odd if it wasn't going out of print

amazon will sometimes pull something if they receive complaints about the product until they can determine if its isolated or not. pretty sure last year/early this year it happend with "seventh seal" and it definitely happend with "walkabout". if anything was on the verge of going out of print, Criterion would tell us, and even then it would still be around forever (not really forever, but much longer after the official oop date). "Pierrot le Fou" has been OOP since march (i believe?) and can still be found places. i wouldn't sweat it.

between bills and my gf's b'day, i haven't been able to buy a single Criterion during the sale. makes me a sad captain. did anyone pick up (and watch ) the Allan King eclipse set? it's one of the more intriguing releases to me and i can't wait to pick it up.

Speaking of... I watched Antichrist last night..... Amazing cinematography, especially the "woods" scenes, and especially at the beginning/end.

So many people "spoiled" certain parts of this one since the weeks before it's release.... but when I watched it, I found the most disturbing events to be the ones that happened within the first 3 or 4 minutes of the film

I'm going to watch it again, but not until after I check out some of the supplemental materials, AND watch Modern Times to lighten the mood....

Finally picked up The Thin Red Line last night.

One of my local B&N stores got it in stock in these twilight days of the sale. Got an additional 10% off on top of it due to a store coupon which I got in my email from B&N as well. Just under $20 including the tax.

Can't wait to watch it - almost had it mailed to me via Netflix. The booklet will be interesting reading, too.

After enjoying many of the Criterion DVDs (especially the Hitchcock movies...gotta love Criterion Hitchcock) I'm finally getting around to buying Criterion blus. Of course, being late to the party, I missed out on The Third Man.

My question to the Criterion experts: Will these OOP discs continue to get more and more rare on the secondary market and demand higher and higher prices, or can I expect to pay in the $55 range whether I buy now or next year? I've never tracked OOP discs and have no idea what to expect on this kind of thing.

Hi, and welcome. To answer your first question, yes, they tend to get more and more rare, although every now and then you find a dip (this is how I got Straw Dogs for $25), but typically if you're late to the party, you're late to the party. I just paid $66 shipped for The Third Man Blu, which is a shade under what is currently par for the course, but I love the movie to death, so I would've paid whatever. I was just patient for a while.

Basically, I would say this. If you love ANY of the 3 Blu's that are OOP so far for Criterion (Third Man, Man Who Fell to Earth, Pierrot Le Fou) or are just a collector, jump on them now. Especially the last 2. Those 2 are still relatively obtainable for a reasonable price. The Third Man, though, you're going to be paying a decent amount for.

Not to single-out SOJ but because of his post I shall single-out his actions...

I seriously hate people who do this... seriously. People that buy up multiple copies of something only to resell the product at a higher price are d**chebags. It's only preventing other people from being able to enjoy something at a fair price. It's a dog-eat-dog world, for sure, but these people are no better than scummy ticket scalpers, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the information. I guess I'll have to hunt down a copy of TTM sooner rather than later. As for the others, I'm only partially interested in them both. I'm a fan of all things Criterion, knowing that most of the films are at least worth the "classroom in a box" kinda thing, but neither of those are necessarily at the top of my list...not with so many others to catch up on.

I've always had a soft spot for Sakamoto. And now I can insert a mention of Black Rain (1989)as Ryuichi Sakamoto's Laserman appears during the film. If I remember correctly it is when Nick Conklin (Michael Douglas) sees Sugai (Tomisaburo Wakayama) for the first time in Club Miyako.
