There is some discussion in the JSA thread that it too has had a 4K restoration and, so far, it appears the Arrow release isn't going to use that newer master.

edit: Apparently, that German release did use an older master: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...=68996&i=0&l=0 So there is an older master that Arrow can use if they want to drop the ball again... What can I say? Let's hope it won't be the case. But enough of talking Arrow on the Criterion thread. Last edited by latehong; 10-24-2020 at 08:12 AM. |

I remember seeing Nov 6 somewhere. I have been planning for this sale for quite a while. Will join B&N and use my 1-time-20% off to get all the criterions on my wish list....can't wait.

1 - the "20% off first order" is not guaranteed, it's a store-specific promotion that may or not even be allowed by corporate this time. 2 - even if it is allowed, it can often be limited to in-store. Depending on the clerk, you might be able to get them to add some ship-to-home stuff from the web, but stock can vary a lot there. And in-store stock has gotten more and more limited recently. (Assuming your local store is even open.) 3 - They have recently begun disallowing any membership discount from applying to the Criterion sale. Again, you might be able to get a clerk to override it, but if you're doing a huge order, you're gonna need a really friendly clerk. Good luck! I'm over 300 and still haven't finished off my wish list, but I'm getting pretty close. If you want to maximize your spending, dig around on-line a bit and you can usually find discounted prices on Barnes and Noble gift cards. You've probably still got time to get them before the sale starts. (One more tip: If you do get it to work, be sure to go into your settings on-line and adjust it so that it will not automatically renew, which is the default setting.) |

1) It is listed on the Website as a Perk of joining and the few stores I've been in over the last few months have signs at every register and is several places throught he store. If they try to deny the 20% then hand them the basket and leave assuming #3 is true AND there isn't some other reason to be denied. The details clearly states NEW Memberships, but I'm not 100% whether they check in any way 3) That has been rumored for many sales, but has never been seen in the wild and member discounts are not store to store variable. I'm not aware of any member who was denied their normal discount during the July Sale despite muhc worry about it. By the time the sale is more than a few hours old, that should be pretty clear. |

FYI. I just tested the BN website. I purchased a new membership and added tons of Criterions to my cart. They took off 20% for all of them!! Didn't have to do anything special. Obviously cancelled everything as the current prices are insane, but it was nice to see this happen. Hoping this remains the case when the 50% sale hits. Will just order online and pick up at local store... easy peasy.

From the Criterion Channel - Carnival of Souls (1962)
![]() Thanks to Professor Echo for the recommendation! I watched Carnival of Souls last night on The Criterion Channel, but it has always been in the public domain, so you can find it anywhere - on one of those cheap multi-pack horror DVDs, YouTube, probably your toaster. Still, try to look for a nice source, because the Criterion print is gorgeous. The premise: A professional concert organist gets into a drag racing accident - boy, this is one interesting woman - and somehow survives. She leaves town but keeps seeing a strange man following her. She also finds herself drawn to the site of an abandoned carnival, for reasons unknown to her. When her overly pushy neighbor shows a romantic interest in her, she halfheartedly reciprocates simply so she won't be alone at night. (BTW, is it just me or does her neighbor look and act like a dead ringer for the Joel Maisel character on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? It would not surprise me if Michael Zegen patterned his performance after this guy. Both are set in the 1960s, so the timeline even fits.) That's the set up for Carnival of Souls, which ends up being an absolutely terrific movie. I always assumed it was pure schlock - because I'm pretty sure I have it on one of those old DVD horror sets you find at the grocery store - but there's a reason Criterion put this out. At only an hour and 18 minutes, it was an easy decision for me to watch this. If you recommend something and it's less than 80-90 minutes, I am much more likely to put it on because I can fit it in easily and short movies like this are ideal for insomnia-watches. DaBargainHunta's Decree: There's so much more I want to say about this surprisingly fantastic film, but it's best for you to discover what happens for yourself. It is sure to inspire debate. Thanks, Echo. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes!) |

[quote=BluCollector13;18228026]Don't know if it's been discussed on here or not, but with HBO Max having "Secrets & Lies" on their site AND it opening with both a Criterion and Janus logo...
...announcement in the next month or two?[/] It’s been playing with the Janus logo for a long time now. I think pretty soon into the launch of the channel ... so I think it’s inevitable but I’m not sure when. Same for High Hopes/Career Girls I imported Peterloo, but since they released Cold War I’ve wondered if they may do a disc for that as well |

Love your review on this film. Out of all the horror films I've seen, Carnival of Souls still remains as one of the few movies to ever creep me out or at least get me to be uncomfortable with. Since I hate creepy organ music so much (Good example of a film with that soundtrack would be Funeral Parade of Roses), Carnival of Souls just really hits the nail onto me. The scary parts in this film also scare me out so much. Maybe one of the few films I would have nightmares on alongside Eraserhead, the only other horror film to ever make me uncomfortable (Exorcist if you count at least a few minutes of being uncomfortable).

Is there any particular reason you don't go for streaming? If it's because you're in an area with bad internet, that's understandable. But, IMO, I don't understand people who avoid streaming just to be contrarian just because they prefer physical media. Well, we all prefer physical media, but shutting yourself off from streaming for that reason alone makes no sense to me. It's like someone from the '80s or '90s saying, "I won't watch a movie on HBO" or "I won't rent a movie from the video store." I don't understand that mindset. The Criterion Channel, in particular, is a tremendous resource. I'm not saying any of this necessarily applies to you - I'm just speaking in general terms. Quote:
For years, I assumed it was terrible low-budget schlock because it's on every grocery store DVD horror set. I was genuinely surprised by what a great movie it is. I'm glad Professor Echo recommended it, because I probably never would've given it a second glance otherwise. I watched Eraserhead for the first time a few months ago, and I concur. I expected it to be weird and confusing for the sake of it, so I was surprised at how coherent and accessible it was. It's still weird, mind you, but not in a way that's hard to follow. I still haven't seen The Exorcist. Eventually, maybe, but the "possession" genre really isn't my favorite - although I respect that this movie is one of the granddaddies of that form. |
