Regarding careless packing\shipping of Criterion discs, I ran across a new one. My copy of The Gunfighter arrived with a disc that was not only loose, but shiney side up! It must have been simply tossed haphazardly into the case. Wrapping and blue sticker were normal. I wonder if the company is aware the physical presentation and packaging of their product sometimes works counter to their image of a carefully curated collection?

I agree Criterion has quickly addressed any product defects or damage I’ve experienced over the years.

Over $2k in a single sale. Now that's what I call a devoted fan.

Business has been booming and I haven’t bought a criterion in at least 3 years so I thought it was time.

I watched War of the Worlds and wow, the picture quality is amazing. I haven't seen the film in many years, forgot how dark some parts of it go. Lots of great extras, awesome disc.

I purchase only from Criterion.com during sales (for the last few years, previously I purchased from B&N as well); I am a collector, and I have purchased every blu-ray Criterion has released since the announcement -first wave of blu-ray discs. Needless to say, I purchase a lot of discs in large orders...
I've ordered directly from Criterion (and not just during sales) and I'm fortunate that none of my orders (maybe 7 - 10 over the years, multiple discs per order) have been damaged. I recently received a Homicide DVD, though, that was strangely labeled with a sticker indicating explicit sexual content (perhaps meant for BITWC or YTMT?).

I received my sale order today (Bruce Lee set, Police Story set, Makavejev DVD set); the boxing was a little strange in that my items were in a bigger box with no filler, so they've been flopping around, I guess, but no harm no foul.

Just watched the trailer to Mank and it looks great. I wonder if Criterion will work with Netflix to release this next year.

My personal favorite performance by Sean Connery was in The Man Who Would Be King. Had this film come out a different year, it may have won the Oscar for Best Picture. In 1975, it wasn't even nominated as it was a great year for films.
[Show spoiler]1975 Best Picture Nominees: Barry Lyndon, Dog Day Afternoon, Jaws, Nashville, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nestt.
Director John Huston spun an engaging, adventurous tale.

RIP Sean Connery. He was in my mind recently but I feel a deep sadness for his loss that I have not felt in quite some time for any other actor we've lost in the last few years (and there have been a lot). He was larger than life, an icon, a franchise.

It would be great if they do move it to December, Amores Perros would be part of the sale. The Irishman doesn't even come out until like the 24th so that would be perfect.

A great choice.

My personal favourite of his performances is The Offence. The scene in which he
[Show spoiler]berates and humiliates his long-suffering wife
is especially indicative of his talent and dramatic range, and almost unwatchable due to its intensity.

Expiring from The Criterion Channel - The Secret Garden (1949)

I missed most of the expiring movies this month, but I'm banking on the noirs and Albert Brooks films coming back and/or showing up elsewhere. I've never seen any version of The Secret Garden, so I decided to go with that.

This is definitely of its time - I suspect modern versions make it a lot more "magical" and "whimsical" - but there is one cool flourish I won't spoil. Otherwise, this is more grounded in reality. The house and situation both reminded me of Netflix's The Haunting of Bly Manor a little bit. It starts off as a somewhat creepy horror mystery before the pieces come together.

Fun fact: The kid on the left? He was almost 20! Whereas, the girl in the middle, Margaret O'Brien, looked too old for the role but wasn't. And Dean Stockwell was older than her but looked years younger. At least they were still actually children. Hollywood puberty is a wondrous thing.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: Not a great movie, but it's solidly spooky - at least at first. I own the 1993 version on DVD (there is no Blu-ray), so I might see how that compares. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes! But they occasionally blend in with the B&W background.)

Expiring from The Criterion Channel - Criss Cross (1949)

The director and star of The Killers (which I still haven't seen) reunite for this noir. I'll keep it short and sweet because it's expiring tonight. Burt Lancaster looks more grimy and desperate here - not his usual handsome, chiseled, movie star persona - as he finds himself caught between his ex-wife and her new "heavy" of a husband (Yvonne DeCarlo and Dan Duryea). Complicating matters is an "impossible" armored car heist. There's some nice pulpy narration by Lancaster's character.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: This is definitely a b-level noir, but it's enjoyable. I'm glad I caught it before it expired. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes!)

Not that the Academy is known to be always an honest jury, but dang, that was a tough year to be a contender. Love the film, and both Connery and Caine work together fabulously. Hoping that the WAC will someday see fit to revisit the film and give it the proper treatment. A modern scan and restoration could, I am sure, solidly bolster the film's presentation even in lowly 1080p. An OPTIONAL surround remix would be an interesting proposition given the scope of the film and the Maurice Jarre score.
