I would never say "An angle-grinder would come in handy EVENTUALLY, heck, I think I'll buy one since I have a GC"

EDIT:

Why don't you save the credit until Criterion releases the new Goddard film with the talking dog..... or perhaps the officially licensed Goddard T-shirt (you know.... the all-white T-shirt with no image on it, because that would be way too conformist)

I seen and own Modern Times, but that isn't the film I said I wouldn't buy with money. That would be Videodrome or House. I was always going to get Modern Times, but not until Dec anyways. I might just buy that then with the rest put it towards the next release I am waiting for, the Basil Dearden Eclipse.

My logic isn't flawed. People buying every release not knowing if they like it, is flawed.

P.S., don't I wish they would make a blank Godard t-shirt. It would look good with my Seven Samurai shoes that lights up when I walk.

Looks like USPS finally got my Night of the Hunter, so that should come tomorrow or Monday. Still don't know what is up with Sherlock Jr not shipping.

I usually stay away from B&N, except for the CC sales (this is the 4th one I have blown too much money on). Amazon is usually a much better option, but they have lacked on their CC prices lately and my prime has not been used much. They used to sell most titles under $25 (I remember getting The Third Man for like $16 last year), but now, everything seems to be $28 and up. Hell, I even ordered 2 CC titles from Target about 4 months ago, because they were even cheaper than Amazon. Ironically, they supposedly are fullfilled by Amazon.

I've seen The Last Picture Show, Five Easy Pieces, and The King of Marvin Garden in totality. I watched bits and pieces of Head years ago and I saw Easy Rider, but can't say when and if I saw the complete film.

Definitely never saw the two Nicholson films that share the same disc.

I got my Sherlock Jr. delivered to store yesterday. I've got a feeling that it was delayed from the warehouse, for one reason or another. I had done the same thing with The General and Steamboat Bill and got them on release date from the store.

Got my NOTH on release date along with Modern Times. I'm guessing some of the warehouses may not have had stock in time for release day?

Good is a relative and personal thing. Most/all of CC's releases are probably "good" but that doesn't mean that I will necessarily "like" it.

I seldom blind buy...not even on the von Sternberg shorts (as it was a more costly set), but will take chances on no-brainers like "Sherlock Jr.", "The General", and "Steamboat Bill" as I am a "silents" fan, a big fan of Chaplin and know about the genius of Keaton as well. That is how I became a more recent fan of his films as well.

For the record, I don't buy ALL CCs for the hell of it...it would be too expensive and my patience of dealing with new genres and directors goes only so far. I'll rent them, but won't necessarily choose to purchase them.

I guess I'm your first worm to crawl out, CC.

I did buy two copies of The Third Man to sell when it was going OOP. I already sold one for about $60 and will be hanging onto the other until it can fetch more. Call it payback for years of having to pay eBayers though the nose for OOP Criterion DVDs--I wanted to be the "pitcher" this time, if you know what I mean.

Honestly Beta, it's Godard, not Goddard. He doesn't run a series of independent American pre-schools...he is a French filmmaker!

How dare you, sir. I suppose you have some sort of sissypants "toe-in-the water" approach. I'll have you know, that I own or have ordered every Criterion BD released so far, and of the five that I have watched--and I even watched the extras on Bigger Than Life--I have enjoyed every one of them.

I totally agree with you. I know it's not my business and people can do what they want with their money but I find it strange when people blind buy the whole collection. It makes me think they're more into the perceived "prestige" of owning the Collection rather than the movies themselves. It's great Criterion opens them up to these types of films but after a while you'd think they'd branch out and buy titles from Kino or some other distributor but alas, the only foreign or classic movie you'll see them owning is all from Criterion.

20 films behind...... You can get to them all by the time the December releases come out, if you really hurry!

And as far the rest of it....
[Show spoiler] it's my B-day today, and I didn't get squat

EDIT:

and that is another blanket statement made..... I may own all the CC Blu-rays, but I have Kino, Studio Canal, and some other "Odd-ball" ones that were imported from the UK (Like Katyn which is great..... basically if Pro-B recommends it, I probably buy it!)

You can't be serious with me right now? Are you joking? Beta called me out on how I'm using my gift card, so I made a little friendly shot at him since he buys every Criterion, yet someone has to quote something I said and turn it into a bigger issue. I hope your joking, as I can't tell by words on a page, unless it's someone I know that jokes all the time, or use smilies.

I don't have a "toe-in-the-water" approach. I am CG damn it! I have seen everything!

P.S., I blind buy alot. I don't buy the things I have already seen and don't like.

Just watched Modern Times, what a classic. The being fed through the cogs(Charlie was quite the stuntman there!) and the corn on the cob parts of the film are freakin' hilarious! Of course the film has it serious parts too. As a film I give it 4 out of 4 stars. I give the PQ and audio the same, as this is the best this film has ever looked or sounded! Now bring on more Chaplin classics Criterion! City Lights or The Gold Rush should be the next release.

Haven't watched it yet but took a sneak peak at the PQ and yes, it is fantastic. I'm personally hoping for The Kid. I never see anyone mentioning this but I would also love to see Monsieur Verdoux.

I actually hope the next Chaplin release is a litte set. It's a sure bet that 1918-1921 films are going to be in a set (30 mins or less movies, besides the Kid).

I would like to see A Woman of Paris soon too.

I love those Chaplin shorts! The girl I'm dating right now loves my Criterion Collection, actually she loves film and music in general!

At best this might be a 'right church, wrong pew' kind of thing.

The people who exploit holiday sales/shortages for the sole purpose of gouging the guy who wasn't in the right place at the right time are pretty lame. No argument. Last year's (or was it 08? They all run together after a while) absurd markups on Wii comes to mind. The same holds for people who exploit shortages of lumber or fresh water after a natural disaster or the ticket scalpers you point to.

But was there ever really a shortage of The Third Man? As J.Cornelius said, there was plenty of notice it was going out of print and it was available for quite a while after it had gone out of print. I was able to get a second copy during last fall's B&N half-off sale.

For that matter, is there really even a shortage now? It's going for what, fifty-sixty bucks in the secondary market? That's hardly a huge markup for an item that originally retailed for fortyish.

Believe it or not...there are people from the UK that post on the Masters of Cinema forum that do the exact same thing with MoC blu-ray releases. I guess some people collect them for the sport of it...like slipcases and steelbooks.

Correction and addition for my last post:

I meant to say von Sternberg "silents" and NOT "shorts". They ARE silent, but not shorts...they are full length films.

And secondly...I bought the set! Had a feeling that I would anyway!

If Criterion didn't have 'collectors' they would not be able to put out so many great titles that people don't watch.
