I'm debating placing an order myself but it'll be my first time importing from the US and don't know too much about it. I have family over yonder so I'm also wondering if things would work out cheaper if they mailed my package on to me from there.

I've been considering the UK Blu for quite awhile, but just don't remember the movie very well. I only saw it once, on cable in the late 80's, and while I recall it not being a great movie, I also seem to think of it fondly as an interesting and compelling one. Am I off base? Does anyone here recommend it?

They even honored my $5 for every $50 you spend coupon after the 30 or 40% Black Friday coupons no longer worked. But yeah, now it won't be $17.99 for a Criterion but $19.99 I guess. Oh well, better than $39.99 still.
Oh yeah, some Criterion purchases during sales were WILD.

Love Sam Fuller so think it's a good cap/coda/reflection of his career in that it unhesitantly goes into tough areas and has juicy, pulpy dialogue.

Was thinking about importing the blu, because one of things I love the most about it is the visual approach with the hard lighting of Los Angeles. Same DP as Night Moves 1975, and most of Clint Eastwoods early movies.

The CC DVD has an interesting interview with Curtis Hansen, love listening to him talk about movies.

Marriage Story and The Irishman are listed as Region A locked on this site, but Criterion states they are region free..

There are a select number of Blu-ray releases that are encoded for other regions:
Come and See - regions A/B
The Complete Films of Agnès Varda - regions A/B/C
Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema - regions A/B/C
The Irishman - regions A/B/C
Marriage Story - regions A/B/C
Roma (2018) - regions A/B/C
War and Peace - regions A/B
Edit: Criterion' may have written some of those in error as there's no indication of Marriage Story or War and Peace being anything but region A locked.

I just checked Marriage Story and it appears to play fine B and C

I added my report to the database. I think if someone else tests and reports it will bump the database entry one direction or the other

I'm seeing War and Peace A-Locked
Come and See A+B
Roma A/B/C
Marriage Story A/B/C

Varda I don't have and I'd be a bit shocked if the entire Bergman set is the same

Good to hear. Perhaps all Netflix titles will be region free. If still like some more confirmation for War and Peace. Someone in the UK Criterion thread said it didn't work on their region B player.

There are rumors that when the first pressing of War and Peace sells out they are going to re-author it to be region AB (This may also apply to Andrei Rublev)

I've recently for the first time started expanding my movie palette and dipping into Criterion films.

I'm going to regret asking because I've already spend a ton of money on blind buys this month but anyone have any they would like to recommend? I like horror, thrillers, art house, surreal or just movies that make you feel something or think.

Here is what I have so far:
1984
Eraserhead
Haxan
Night of the Living Dead
Repulsion
Rosemary's Baby

What I have but have yet to watch:
Brood
Fantastic Planet
For All Mankind
Godzilla
House
Ikiru
Last Temptation of Christ, The
Passion of Joan of Arc
Scanners
Seven Samurai
Stalker
Videodrome
War of the Worlds

What I'm considering:
Carnival of Souls
Come and See
The Vanishing

Any more I that I should be on the look out for based on my tastes?

If you like Tarkovsky (Stalker) and love religious films, check out Marketa Lazarova. It's an excellent surreal, art house feature.

I'm still in the process of opening my DeepDiscount sale Criterion discs, where I had already previously reported half of them were in the loose shrinkwrap and without sticker, well my copy of The Times Of Harvey Milk was such a copy and..... there is even a store alarm strip inside. There you go, clearly this was old store stock. I'm now also convinced all copies without sticker are returned items or old store stock. I won't even waste my time trying to find out if any of the movies I have are "director approved"-stickered releases because if Criterion goes out of their way to obtain such an approvel and create a sticker for it, there's no way they'd ship out copies without said sticker.

Nope. And as a surreal, artsy horror film, it basically covers all of your interests.

You can't waver on Carnival of Souls either.

Out of the 5 Malick films Criterion has released, which one is the best for someone who loved Tree of Life but hasn't seen any other Malick? Not sure if I should get Tree of Life for the extended cut or do a blind buy.

In terms of style, the closest is The New World, as Tree of Life’s cinematic vocabulary essentially evolved from Malick and Chivo’s earlier collaboration on that film. But any Malick film is very recognisable as a Malick film, and all the films easily fit together on the whole as a body of work.

But really, if I had to choose one film to introduce someone to Malick it would be The Thin Red Line. For any of his other films, if someone fails to “get” them at first, I’m not bothered as to some extent one really does need to just surrender to his singular vision. But for The Thin Red Line, the complete mastery of form is so evident that it’s just hard for me to fathom how anyone cannot appreciate it at least at the surface level.

My personal favorite Malick films are The Thin Red Line, The New World, and The Tree of Life. That is the "Malick trilogy" for me at least and his finest work of all time, in my humble opinion.

Start with TTRL and progress from there. After you watch TNW, go back and watch his 2 early films: Badlands and Days of Heaven. The latter is also an amazing piece of cinema. Finally, if you still are enjoying his work, watch his remaining films he made after TTOL.

I mentioned it in the sales thread, but it kind of sucks that you can't even use the 10% membership discount anymore. Us collectors really had it good years ago when you could stack the membership discount and the membership coupons together haha.

I'll just be picking up the Varda collection, The Irishman, and Parasite this time. I gotta keep the haul light.
