I watched it three and a half years ago and don't remember it that well, but apparently I found it pretty good, looking at the score I gave it. Actually, what I remember is lighthearted vignettes of the family's everyday life, like a slice of life manga. I just don't remember most of the specifics of those vignettes. Will rewatch one day.

Finally got around to checking out Criterion’s The New World extended cut in the spirit of the holiday. Anyone happen to watch this recently and notice the sound cut out at around 45:07 in? Odd. My disc appears undamaged.

Loved the film. Really hoping they put out Malick’s A Hidden Life.

Describing Grave of the Fireflies as "very good" is IMO a huge understatement. But I have yet to see Tale of Princess Kaguya, so you have the benefit of doubt

Yea, it's a charming light-weight movie, easy to re-watch precisely because.

There's no reason for them to.

And why's that?

They have put out all his Major films. Why break the streak? It is a Marvelous film

And we can dream that maybe Criterion will release a box set of his "side projects"

Anyone here ever seen it? You rarely see it mentioned in the Criterion threads, so I'm hoping it's not one of those titles every critic says is a must own, but nobody else ever wants to watch it.
Masterpieces, both.

Sure, but there was hardly reason for Parasite or many other films with existing blu releases. I’m all for this one getting the care of a Criterion treatment.

This seems to be a chronic problem with a lot of more recently pressed Criterion discs. Why is it not more often discussed?

The most emotionally draining film I have ever seen, animated or not.

I’ve noticed. It’s puzzling. Definite quality control problems. Most of the time it doesn’t affect playback, so most people probably don’t even notice.

On the other hand, I have a perfect looking New World extended cut disc, yet there is an audio drop out at 45:07 into the film. I suppose it could be baked into the disc, if anyone wanted to try their copy to verify...

"Influence" can take many disparate forms. It can mean taking specific shots and duplicating them in a new context (like the famous "Odessa steps" sequence in Battleship Potemkin), or it can mean re-using a narrative form (telling the story from several different points of view, like Rashomon), or it can mean borrowing a specific or general mise-en-scène.

On the Criterion laserdisc of Raging Bull, Martin Scorsese talked about various films he was influenced by when making it, showing scenes that he borrowed from The Quiet Man, Force of Evil, and On the Waterfront (to name three).

Raging Bull is really nothing like any of those films, but when one sees what Scorsese took from where and why, the influence is undeniable.

Well at the very least you can confirm if it's baked into the transfer or not when The New World is uploaded onto the Criterion Channel on December 1.

I just checked my copy and didn't notice anything with the audio at 45:07.

I'd love A Hidden Life too but since that's a Disney/Fox title it's really unlikely

Oh cool! I looked for it on there... didn’t realize they’re adding it soon. Hopefully they put the extended cut up. Thanks for the tip!

Wow, I just noticed this over at Criterion. Anyone have this set? It looks awesome. If this doesn't remind me of childhood Saturday afternoons, nothing will
