I’m wondering if Solaris and The Limey could possibly be the other ones.
I'd be mixed on this for sure---I'd love to ditch my old BUBBLE DVD, but I really don't want FULL FRONTAL or GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE.

EDIT: Mixed on getting it---not for them making it. They can make whatever they want, idgaf

I just hope one of the 7 films includes a blu-ray release for his version of Solaris.

I think Criterion should nab some Vinterberg films. Or at least Festen.

Not to mention that Box Set packaging is almost always terrible and can be damaging to discs.

Which titles? Cause there's always a chance they will release titles they feel can work on an individual release. Like how the Bergman collection also had a solo release of Shame.

I wouldn't mind a large collection of AK's work. All the stuff from their releases of LaserDisc to DVD to Blu-ray; but all the titles that were compiled in the Eclisps sets.
Just a mega collection of all of what they own of Kurosawa would be fantastic.

Seriously! Let's see. I'd imagine a Kurosawa box of everything they have from him would be in the same field of pricing as the Bergman. So 300. Half off, naturally when it would be make the most sense to buy, 150. So that's the price, half off, of 7 (and a half) films that could also be released individually (under the assumption they are put out at the typical 39.99 price). There sure are more than 7 films by Kurosawa that would be making their appearance for the first time on blu-ray, especially if the Eclipse films are in the mix (which I think, on their own, equal 7).

Even if you own allllll of the Kurosawa blus that Criterion has put out (which are fewer than I think I even realized), it's still more cost efficient to buy them all in a big package that ends up with double dips than it would be if the missing ones were upgraded on their own. And it doesn't detract from your enjoyment of those discs over the years (and if you're prone to selling off old copies, even better).

EDIT: What did actually piss me off was Criterion releasing VIRGIN SPRING in late June, me buying it at the BN sale like two weeks later, and the next day or the day after that announcing the big boy set. I was NOT happy.

There are only a few Kurosawa's that I would say I really want on Blu-ray. The main ones I want are DRUNKEN ANGEL, THE BAD SLEEP WELL, DERSU UZALA, and a RAN release that's better than the Lionsgate one and doesn't have the horrible color timing of the Studio Canal release.

I'd buy all the others, but those are my most wants.

Me too, i'd add Red Beard too and that's pretty much it for me. That's 6 more blu rays I want and then Criterion can do whatever they want. I also could care less about a giant box set that doesn't fit in my collection. I love my individual releases, each with their own booklets. You'd loose all of these booklets with a big release. I'd be pissed. They already ruined the showa godzilla movies for me, i'm really hoping they don't do the same for Kurosawa.

But i'm sure they will. Criterion used to be my favorite company but they keep on disappointing me in the last few years.
Plus how about a single release of Seven Samurai on 4k? Instead of a giant box set with the same blu ray we already own...

It's not always just about the money. Plus as a Canadian this is way more expensive, it would be insane for us up North. :P
And yeah, i'm sure i'm not the only one that can't stand those big giant box sets. I love my Kurosawa movies, movies like Seven samurai or Ran deserves more than being lumped with 30 other movies, as a collector I hate when my favorite movies loose their individuality. Part of the reason I appreciate Scream factory and their box sets (like The Fly).

Yeah, I'm not the biggest fans of some of their box sets. The Zatoichi being the exception as it's a good size and easy to remove the discs.

I'm also certain there will be a Akira Kurosawa set coming as that's the only reason why they haven't released one of his films since Dreams. I'm guessing Seven Samurai will have a 4K scan. The question is when will the set release, but I'm guessing this time next year.

It's funny because I was very disappointed by the Zatoichi box set when it first came out (I own the big lumpy one that also has the dvds) but compared to their Showa Godzilla box set, it's a masterpiece haha. :P
I hate that I had to make custom cases and use custom covers for the Showa Godzilla set, it's already expensive enough and then I had to put more money to get those made.
At least Arrow are releasing regular size versions of the Gamera movies, giving us an option. Not so with Criterion and their awkward packaging. The problem is as a Kurosawa and Godzilla fan, I have no other options then to buy their stuff if I want to own them. :/
Hopefully you guys are right and they will release these Kurosawa movies separately after. It just, it's not enough we have to wait for these movies to be release, now we have to wait for a big box set and THEN wait for them to be release separately. It's been so long since Dreams already, i'm starting not to care anymore. Any other companies would have already given us these great movies on blu ray.

More so than a Kurosawa box set (especially now that I've purchased all of his releases minus Dreams), I really want another compendium of all their non-Kurosawa samurai flicks that haven't been released on Blu-ray yet.

That'd be a totally welcome and kickass release.

^Oh yeah, something like a blu-ray upgrade of their Rebel Samurai set. If they can add Samurai Assassin to that, I'd be overjoyed.

Add me to those who want that elusive Kurosawa set and especially Stray Dog.

A Kurosawa boxset would give us, in addition to those mentioned, Drunken Angel (a personal favorite), on Blu-ray.

Such a shame because the dvd came out around the same time as High and Low, both had the same layout and the same quality but only High and Low was release later on blu ray. They had a great release for Drunken and could have just as easily did the same. I was really annoyed by Criterion back then but figured they'd just get to it later on. 8 years later and I was dead wrong.
Imo, it's Takashi Shimura's best role (with Seven Samurai a close second). I always found that Brad Douriff's performance in Deadwood was very similar, a drunk doctor that acts like he's burned out and just done with everyone but just really cares in the end. Such a phenomenal performance.
