Good for you. He's my favorite director even though I still need to see some more films including the flavor of tea over green rice (also the rest that Criterion doesn't have). My first was Floating Weeds so give that a shot it also comes with the first one which is silent (i think, don't have my copy handy to check )

Characters speaking into the camera is very Ozu. It really sets his films apart from everything else I have ever seen.

Just got back from seeing George Clooney's new sci fi melodrama: The Midnight Sky. The movie came out today in theaters and as of midnight it is no longer available to see in theaters at least in my state due to the complete closure and shutdown of all movie theaters due to Covid. Luckily I got to see this in a theater for 1 night only before the shutdown (this comes 1 night after I saw The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone last night in another theater!).

Anyway, I wrote a quick review here if anyone is interested in reading: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...7&postcount=33

I wish Criterion could feature some modern day sci fi in their collection (such as this new movie - though I know Netflix owns it). I appreciate them obtaining classic sci fi like War of the Worlds, Solaris, and Fantastic Planet, but there are so many amazing indie/contemporary sci fi (outer space) films that I wish Criterion would release too (such as Soderbergh's remake of Solaris from 2002). It's a bit glaring and shocking to me that there is not a single science fiction film from the 21st century in the Criterion Collection.

I hope to see 3-Iron and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring to picked up Criterion next year. At least, by someone. I loved Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring ever since I saw in my film class nearly a decade ago.

Yep, and apparently Malle made a kind of intimate party about it, with the discussions before recording being done over drinks with Jeanne Moreau. I can imagine a guy getting persuaded by that sort of thing.

I saw some of the featurettes on the disc, and among the set of 3 extras devoted to Miles Davis' score is a video piece where the participants talk about the role that the Elevator score played in influencing a change of course in Miles' musical style from a traditional bebop guy to someone with a more unique vision.

I'd buy all the others, but those are my most wants.

Default Box Sets

I'd say yes to a Kurosawa box set for sure

What I would really love though I suspect is not on their radar at Criterion is

A Powell and Pressburger - The Archers box set
A Capra box set
A John Ford box set
or a Hawkes box set.

It's the classics for me.

Other than that, I hope that Criterion remains a beacon for getting more Fox titles out of Disney

We get I Know Where I am Going as a single release

The Shanghai Gesture restored.

Haha. I like Stray Dog, but it's not one of my favorite Kurosawa films. Still, I'd buy a Blu-ray of it in a heartbeat.

Davis also did a couple of soundtracks in the late 80s, for Dennis Hopper's "The Hot Spot" and Mary Lambert's "Siesta", and in 1991 for the Australian film, "Dingo" which Davis also starred in. And of course he appeared as a busker in "Scrooged".
Dingo. Now that's a movie I'd like to see again. The only film other than Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome that I've seen Helen Buday in.

The theatrical release was always going to be a brief one. It's starts on Netflix on December 23rd.

It was briefer than brief this time though (due to state regulations).

Crossing fingers for a Akira Kurosawa and John Woo set.
Is there any reason to believe there could be a Kurosawa set coming? Any hints? I haven’t been paying much attention lately, and the news of a Kurosawa set would be excellent.

Dvd's sell too well for CC for $20+. Why use 4K restorations on 4K discs, when you can put them on a 2 cent dvd for almost nothing. Gotta pay for that Park Avenue office somehow. Money matters....

Default 4K Coming...Soon?

from Criterion's mission statement:

"the Criterion Collection has been dedicated to publishing important classic and contemporary films from around the world in editions that offer the highest technical quality"

I'll still keep buying their releases but I think a lot of us are losing patience with Criterion still dragging their feet on 4K releases, especially since so many other smaller boutique labels have already made the jump.

Granted I only have about 20ish Criterion titles, them going 4K scares me. Yes, I'll re-buy everything

The MSRP on them will likely be $60 too.

I would love it if Criterion led the pack, but those smaller boutique labels went 4K this year, or, in Severin's case, next year. Even going 4K in 2022 wouldn't be that far behind.

Every time someone posts this, Criterion pushes back their first UHD release another three months

And everytime someone posts this they seem to forget the dilemma going region free would cause

Not to mention the problems caused caused by gojng dual play when they introduced blu.

Will it be just separate 4K as arrow are doing or 4K & blu?

DVDs are still massive sellers for them. Putting out 3 different formats for each film?
