Out of curiosity...

Is there any evidence that Criterion employees, both in the decision chain and rank-and-file, read this forum?

In the "can't resist" category:
Is there any evidence of how much amusement we have provided them?

I’m so excited about Defending Your Life. I love this movie, but never felt the need to buy it until now. Can’t wait!

Maybe they are working on a good HD print for a while now or they feel like not enough people are asking about it. Who knows for sure.

Good question. Should be out already.

It's rare that I like a new cover more than the original poster but the artwork for Celine and Julie Go Boating is great and captures the spirit of the film so well. It's the sort of perfect visual encapsulation that Polish poster designers were so talented at during the 1960s-80s. (It also led me the artist's IG page -> https://www.instagram.com/laurentamaki/)

haas it ever been stated how far along in a restoration that will tell is hitting BD?
it depends on the film but the newer ones don't need much for a blu-ray and they still have a large amount of DVDs in the collection that need an upgrade.

how about the boxset? like for Wong Kar Wai it was close to being finished before they said something right.

Precisely. It still didn't prevent them to release The Deer Hunter on UHD despite not having seemingly bought the Region B rights.

They could be the 1st or 10th, it doesn't change the fact that licences are still bought on a market-by-market basis by the sub-licensors, and clearly, all indie labels are able to do their business on UHD like they did on BD without the lack of UHD region locking seemingly bothering anyone.

Again, Arrow is a good example : they don't have the UK rights for Django, they'll still do a UHD release that, while aimed solely at the US market, will be region-free. See also (bis repetita) Crash (Criterion has the US rights), Flash Gordon (rights haven't been sub-licenced by Canal in Europe), Demons (Synpase has the US rights), Oldboy (who knows who has the US rights right now) and King of New York (Lionsgate has the US rights).

Also on Crash : Carlotta's French UHD and Turbine's German UHD are region-free too, despite, again, Criterion having the US rights.

So not only examples exist outside Studio Canal's catalogue, but as detailed, the lack of region-locking system on UHD clearly is part of the market on this technology and has been incorporated by the market as such. So it's not a reason for Criterion not to go UHD, since litterally everyone else is able to manage this.

Just received Personal Shopper from Amazon, but it wasn’t in the normal plastic wrapping, more of a shrink wrap, & it was missing the “director approved” sticker on the front.
Even though I ordered it new, seems like I might have been shipped a repackaged return.

Demonlover is now on Janus's website.

https://www.janusfilms.com/films/2016

This coincides with the company tweeting a still from the film yesterday.

This comes up all the time. Brand new Criterion discs can be wrapped in either "tight" shrink-wrap, or "looser" cellophane wrap - and come with or without the sticker. There are undoubtedly re-wraps, but if you purchased directly from Amazon (not a third-party seller, or Amazon's "Warehouse"), it's very unlikely to be one.

I very much doubt that such a highly rated film doesn't gave a large following

Yep. They finally use the original poster art, or a close facsimile thereof, but they choose a movie that had lousy original poster art.

I rarely find CC at Best Buy and have never found them at Target or Walmart. Today at Albertsons, a grocery store, I found a copy of The Irishman. Sometimes life just sees if you’re paying attention, I guess. The movie is okay, but what an odd find.

Curious as to what Criterion will bring us in 2021. Hopefully we get some gems from the silent era!

Also, obligatory plea for That Hamilton Woman.
