I apologize ahead of time if this subject has been introduced and analyzed, as it often is on this thread.

In light of the current planetary atmosphere, I have noticed that it has been a rather long time since Criterion customers were given a clue in the form of a sketching. It makes me wonder, after experiencing such a limited (in terms of variety) sketching last year, if we may even get a sketching at all.

Sorry for my rant, but this has become something that I look forward to. In the midst of a pandemic, it would be virtual "comfort food."

Isn’t that thing removable? I’m sure that I removed mine – although sometimes that chewing gum like adhesive can be hard to overcome! I’m sure that paper on the back is meant to be taken off – like most of those you get on the back of box sets.

I want to keep it firstly, and that part is ripped, as well as the case itself being broken.

This is probably a long shot, but does anyone know of Criterion ever having replaced artwork for out-of-print titles (for a price, of course)? I wonder if they lose access to the cover art once they lose the rights to the film itself. I have a couple of OOP Criterion discs that I've always wanted to replace the artwork for (one has water damage, the other a couple punctures), but I've always assumed they couldn't do it.

I don't believe they have replacement packaging for OOP titles.

I can confirm after doing a disc replacement for Howard's End earlier this year they do not replace OOP disc artwork or cases. They will still replace the disc if it's part of the "browning" disc issue.

Also, hoping for the Lillian Gish movies that she did for MGM to show up either through Criterion or Warner.

You'd have to check with them if they are doing it again. They stopped for awhile back when COVID started and told me they didn't know when replacements would start back up---They were just sending out brand new copies if you bought directly from their site.

Thanks for the heads up. That honestly kind of surprises me—I'd expect they'd be able to reprint artwork (which they've often commissioned themselves) before they could repress a full disc of a film they no longer have the rights to.

They probably keep spare discs for replacement issues, especially if they come from a source that was noted to have problems for specific titles, but very rarely do labels expect or honor requests for spare cover art.

The OOP titles they've been replacing are ones affected by the bronzing. So, if you needed to replace your copy of, say, The Man Who Fell to Earth, I wouldn't expect them to be able to replace it.

So the back cover for Amores Perros says it was licensed from Lions Gate Entertainment. I know I had inquired about who they were licensing from in the past, and got an answer that Lionsgate's rights may have expired, and the rights likely reverted back to producers, but that doesn't appear to be the case then?

I recently watched Europa (1991) for the first time and I love it. I'm hoping Criterion will release a Europa trilogy boxset soon because I never saw the other two movies in the trilogy (The Element of Crime (1984) and Epidemic (1987) ).

I love that Amazon has kept many of their Criterions at a reduced price, even after the sale they were matching at Barnes and Noble has ended. After using a gift certificate to grab Ghost Dog as part of my B and N buy (along with Arrow releases of Weird Science and Flash Gordon), I’ve bought Do the Right Thing, Destry Rides Again and The French Lieutenant’s Woman on impulse on different days. And now, I’m waiting for The Breakfast Club to arrive tomorrow.

You might look on customaniacs.org. There are all kinds of custom covers available there, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the now OOP release artwork you’re needing were there, as well. Make an account, and have a look around.

When I bought The Curious Case of Benjamin Button on blu-Ray, I was able to locate someone that had done the artwork to go with the standard Scanavo case Criterion uses. They printed it out on high quality photo paper (with the artwork on both sides), put it in a new Scanavo case, and shipped it to me for about $10.

If the artwork is there, it should only cost you a few bucks to get the high resolution copy to print. You may even find someone that could do it for you.

Good luck.

If a DVD-R release from, like say MGM, is completely gone from Amazon (not even a used copy available), is that more of a "sign" that it may be coming from Criterion more sooner than later? Criterion has been sitting on it for years, and I would love it to finally see the light of day on Blu from Criterion. Or does the somewhat OOP status and lack-of-stock really mean nothing? TIA.

Title in question: Ken Russell's The Music Lovers

It has been rumored to be with Criterion for like 6 years, but the DVD-R could've disappeared because MGM is now being distributed by Warner Brothers.
