They always have for me so far, but if you want to hedge your bet, order early. (Sales usually start around noon, but the site will be HAMMERED for 30-60 minutes.)

Also, don't forget that the free shipping threshold is $50, meaning that if you are using the giftcard to get a half-priced $100 box set for free, you will need something else on top or they'll hit you with shipping charges. Because it's gonna show as $49.99 in the cart, and they will NOT give you free shipping for the extra penny.

It was such a small thing last year, but I had two $10 coupons saved up, so I applied them towards three discs. That put my total way under the $50 threshold - but they count the amount before coupons towards calculating shipping, so I got the free shipping too. It was a good day.

Movies that I hope Criterion will release this maybe year or next year.

Anything from Ming-liang Tsai
Coffee and Cigarettes (2003)
City of the Lost Childern (1995)
Cure (1997)
Europa trilogy box set (1984-1991)
John Woo box set
Kafka (1991)
Terrorizers (1986)
Mahjong (1996)
M. Butterfly (1994)
One-Armed Swordsman trilogy (1967-1971)
O-Bi, O-Ba: The End of Civilization (1985)
Onibaba (1964) on Blu-ray
On the Silver Globe (1988)
Raise the Red Lantern (1991)
Singapore Sling (1990)
The Trial (1962)

Some of these probably won't happen, but I can dream.

"Hi,

Thanks for reaching out! Due to licensing restrictions, the discs available on Criterion.com are Region 1 (DVD) and Region A (Blu-Ray), limited to shipping within the US and Canada. THE WORLD OF WONG KAR WAI on Criterion.com will only be available as a Region A Blu-Ray.

The good news is that a Region B version of the set will be available in the UK April 2021."

That's awesome. However, I still like to see Criterion pick it up because it allows more people to get exposure to the movie.

Yeah I'm not sure what's going on, because a few of his films already on Criterion are also going to be in this 4K box... So Kafka could still potentially also get a Criterion Bluray I suppose

Been waiting for Criterion to release Cure for what seems like a lifetime. I wish they hadn't acquired the rights if they had no timetable set up for when they were going to release it. I think it's been 10 years at this point.

Tonight, in the Man Cave, Diabolique, an excellent French thriller. I love this movie, and the ending leaves a question of doubt.

Seeing that Criteron did release the original War of the Worlds, I hope they could release The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) for the 70th anniversary. The old Blu-ray is out of print and was released a long time ago. A 4k restoration would be nice.

The 2014 Korean Film Archive Blu-ray (now OOP) is very English-friendly, providing English subtitles not only for the feature but also for the audio commentary by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) and critic Lee Dong-jin, "Martin Scorsese on the Housemaid" featurette, "Directors on Kim Ki-young" documentary and Kim Ki-young's short film "I Am a Truck." Even the booklet is translated into English. The only extra that doesn't have English subtitles is "The Box of Death," another feature film by Kim Ki-young, but that's because the entire soundtrack for the film is lost, so even that is not English-unfriendly.

And the 2009 KOFA DVD release of the film had the audio commentary by Bong Joon-ho (Parasite) and critic Kim Young-jin, which also came with English subtitles. That commentary has not been ported to the Blu-ray.

So, there are enough materials for a new English-friendly release...

There's actually a 4K restoration already, though it was done much later than the 2008 Blu-ray.

edit: For that matter, there's a ton of Fox films with 4K masters that are either MIA from Blu or haven't ever had a home video release.

Oh wow, I did not realise this exists. I'm sure it'll cost a fortune if it pops up on ebay.

It's not top tier Soderbergh but King of the Hill is definitely one of his most underrated IMHO.

His first studio picture has an, unusual for him, sentimental streak and the style is more classical than what he eventually developed as his signature but this depression era set tale, adapted from AE Hotchner's autobiographical novel, is still a very carefully crafted piece of work.

The film is from the point of view (or rather it seem memories) of Jesse Bradford's teen character as he goes through a critical coming of age period in his life. Structured largely as series of vignettes around an assortment of various characters that Bradford's resourceful teen interacts with, the film still follows a pretty linear and cohesive, but also unsurprising, narrative direction. My one real complaint was the end scenes felt a little rushed and not as earned as Soderbergh was probably intending.

In the on-disc interview, Soderbergh seems a bit disappointed with the film and, in particular, thinks now that it looks 'too beautiful'. I will have to disagree with him there. I think that had he shot this more grittily, as is the convention these days for a film of this type, it might have had more of a miserablist tone than it actually does with the mismatch between visuals and what is happening on screen. As I mentioned above, to me it gives the film a feeling of recollected memories rather than just a telling of the tale.

Criterion's blu is from an older 2k Spirit scan and restoration from an IP and it generally looks pretty good and well rendered if not as filmic as today's more advanced restorations. The 'too beautiful' look and colour scheme comes through pretty well and Cliff Martinez's touching score comes across really nicely via the lossless audio.

If you want to try to find the original DTESS blu-ray the remake's blu-ray edition that was released initially came with a bonus disc of the original on blu-ray. I bought it for under $5 on ebay and then just printed an insert and kept solely the originals disc.

This is why I own the remake at all, because it came with the original. Was not a bad deal at all at the time.

I seem to have stopped getting emails from Criterion. Have they just been slow lately, or is something up with my account? I don’t want to miss the semi annual sale!
