Interesting to see that the Thin Red Line is being rated (proposal at this stage) to have the best PQ of ANY blu ray - on the AVS Forum PQ thread just above Toy Story 3 and Avatar:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1168342

I purchased the movie during the sale but I have yet to see it since we are living with my mother in law until we move into a new house we are trying to buy. Can't wait to see it.

I never liked this movie the first time I saw it, but I might have to give it another chance because I did, indeed, hear that the PQ was absolutely flawless. Too bad I didn't pick it up during the sale.

I decided to add the Louis Malle Eclipse set just awhile ago (thanks again to those who recommended it to me!), so all I need for my Eclipse Series collection is the Flamenco set (which is OOP but was never my priority - everyone who has it seem to say it is a must-buy). I will have to say, so far....I have not been disappointed by an Eclipse series release. Oh, and one thing, many of you have asked me if I had "The Golden Age of Television", I bought it at the beginning of the sale and started watching it and man, I love it.

OK….Final haul:

3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg
Close-Up
Crumb
Drunken Angel
Eclipse Series 1: Early Bergman
Eclipse Series 2: The Documentaries of Louis Malle
Eclipse Series 12: Aki Kaurismäki’s Proletariat Trilogy
Eclipse Series 13: Kenji Mizoguchi’s Fallen Women
Eclipse Series 14: Rossellini’s History Films—Renaissance and Enlightenment
Eclipse Series 16: Alexander Korda’s Private Lives
Eclipse Series 17: Nikkatsu Noir
Eclipse Series 20: George Bernard Shaw on Film
Eclipse Series 22: Presenting Sacha Guitry
Eclipse Series 24: The Actuality Dramas of Allan King
Early Summer
Golden Age of Television
Human Condition
Ivan’s childhood
La Ronde
Le Plaisir
Louie Bluie
The Magician
Mishima – A Life in Four Chapters
Patriotism
Thin Red Line
Mystery Train
Night on Earth
Night Train to Munich
Sawdust and Tinsel
Stranger than Paradise
Stray Dog

There are five more I want to get...but with the Warner Gangsters sets and Forbidden Hollywood sets on sale on Amazon right now for the lowest prices I have seen, these other five Criterions I want will have to wait. Hopefully they don't go OOP though.

La Bete Humain
Trouble in Paradise
Hara-Kiri
Bad Timing
Stage and Spectacle: Renoir set

I'm hoping there is a Criterion sale next year. Whoever owns B&N...hopefully they do it.

I told myself no dvd's on this sale, but I gave in out of boredom. (I was on a business trip out of state and was by myself for 4 nights, found myself driving around to the different Barnes N Nobles out of habit)

Ended up with :

Modern Times (blu)
Night of the Hunter (blu)
Antichrist (blu)
The BBS Story (blu)(through the library link for cheap)
The Most Dangerous Game (dvd)
Louie Bluie (dvd)
Classe Tous Risques (dvd)

I'm weary on picking up dvd releases in case they end up getting upgraded to blu.

Last DVD I purchased for myself must have been 2 years ago.

Watched Monsoon Wedding and Night of the Hunter over the weekend. I'll have a detailed review for both as soon as I get through all the extras. I'm really enjoying the production disc 2 for Night of the Hunter.

Didn't want to draw attention to any part of the film...the reason for the "spoiler"...
[Show spoiler]The ending is the reason that I've held off on getting it. I was so pissed after that, that I couldn't convince myself to purchase it!

The $5.00 coups have always been "one time use only" and it says it right on the coup. Most of the B & N store personnel are very good about repeated use...as long as one item uses it per transaction. That is the need for (10) transactions for (10) CC BDs, where you need to use the coup.

Well considering the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set normally retails for $60 above, then it is on sale at that price.

wow.
obviously wasn't referring to that one which isn't even listed at $30--it's $37.99.
good grief.
guess I have to spell it out more clearly--
so for sOOperdOOper--I was referring to CHARADE and BREATHLESS and THE RED SHOES and THE MAGICIAN.
so glad we got that cleared up.

Hey Beta...I finally got my wife to buy ANYTHING CC, as we were at the B & N store yesterday and knew that it was the last day of the sale.

I FINALLY convinced myself to buy The Seventh Seal. I think watching The Magician got me to thinking more about Bergman and even if it takes a while for me to fully embrace this film, for $14.06, it seemed a sin not to pick it up, ESPECIALLY for all the supplemental material on Bergman.

The wife "bought" a DVD that I've never seen: "Science Is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé"...looks interesting. Hey...a good buy for her...(3) DVDs and it's normally $39.99...got it for $14.06.

My wife enjoys watching quite a few of them....... I don't think she's purchased a DVD (she's never purchased a Blu-ray) that wasn't a pre/post-natal workout video, yoga, other work-out video etc.....

If she wants something (like when City of God came out, or "The Virgin Suicides" etc ) she tells me to "find it"

This exchange happened at my local BN when buying Modern Times:

clerk: do you have a membership card?
me: nope
clerk: well, we have a 15% promotion I'll apply to your purchase. Charlie would've wanted it this way

That's cool. I love it when clerks are real helpful. In one of my trips to the store, I wanted to use a coupon on two movies but only had one printed out. The clerk grabbed one on the counter and said, "use this".
