Criterion and Studiocanal are working together again so its not insurmountable and they've even posted cryptic tweets referring to the film but then the Janus account does that all the time so that doesn't mean anything. I wonder if Lionsgate still has the film in the US with its crappy older master and that's why it hasn't been released here. When, I went region free, Ran was one of the first titles I grabbed as I was sick of waiting.

Yes, and Casanova. It's most likely a licensing issue. Essential Fellini is such a great name they won't let a few licensing issues get in the way.

Yeah, I have to imagine they would have gotten everything, including I Clowns and the Director's Notebook, if they could have and even still called it the Essential Fellini.

I'm happy with the set as it is and will just end up picking up City of Women and Casanova later on.

My most three wanted boxset would a Kurosawa, Kobayashi, or Gosha. Either way, who knows if that any of those will happen as it seems like Criterion seems to have forgotten Japanese cinema.

I'm angling for a Kobayashi boxset as well, and it seems somewhat likely that they could put something of decent size together considering the Eclipse releases.

It doesn't seem like the kind of seller as a Kurosawa set though, and I'm of the belief that they're holding back on Kurosawa releases in preparation for a boxset. It makes sense, at least.

It's an extra on the 8 1/2 disc. I agree with the general opinion that Casanova and City of Women are the essential omissions.

Yeah, a Kurosawa boxset would be a massive seller for them, especially since a lot of his films don't even have Blu-ray's yet. I know some needed a lot of work being restored so that could a reason why it hasn't happened yet. Also, they would have to work with Toho on a lot of of the films, and apparently Toho has become much more stubborn and demanding in the last decade.

A Director's Notebook is in the box set on the Juliet of the Spirits disc.

I was kinda expecting City of Women because Cohen did allow Criterion to include Varda's Faces Places in their Varda boxset.

In retrospect, not even thinking of rights issues, I think I wish they had included Ginger and Fred most out of what got left out. I don't love it as much as City of Women, but as the film that brought together Giulietta Masina and Marcello Mastroianni for the first time in a Fellini picture, and considering it's about artists saying goodbye to each other and their art, it feels like Fellini's real last picture, moreso than Intervista or even The Voice of the Moon.

I remember the picture having a blurry look at times (when I rented it out on either VHS or DVD). Would you recommend the Studiocanal UK Blu-ray release of Inland Empire? Have checked out the Blu-ray.com review, and it seemed very positive in general.

One of the Criterion States-only releases I hope to get is Blue Velvet. Eraserhead had a release by Criterion's UK branch as well, so I'm hoping to get that soon (along with Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion).

Yeah. Since Ginger and Fred is the only one not on Blu-ray, it not being in the box is the biggest omission. They said they tried but couldn't get the rights, so I assume it might no longer be with Warner Brothers.

I have only seen / own the 2-Disc US DVD set, but I found this blog which does a comparison.

They say the video and audio are a very slight uptick on the Blu-ray, but the DVD has a lot of good extras for Lynch fans.
