Does anyone else do this? I start a blind buy and get distracted or not interested and don't finish it. But I have to give it several times like A Canterbury Tale to actually finish the movie. I'm for the most pleased with my Criterions even when I blind buy but some films make me try a couple times to watch them.

Did a double header last night with pick ups from the flash sale. The Piano Teacher and Safe. Holy moly, both were absolutely incredible. Highly recommend!

If a movie doesn't grab me within the first 20 minutes I start to lose interest. This is why I never finish weird arthouse-y films like Repo Man. There are a lot of films like that in the Criterion catalog. Red Desert, Jubilee and My Own Private Idaho were like that.

Expiring from The Criterion Channel TONIGHT - Bell, Book and Candle (1958)

Fun at first but quickly became plodding and charmless. If you really want to see Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak in the same movie, I'm sure it won't take you long to find a much better alternative. Whatever chemistry they showed in their more famous film was completely lacking here. Jimmy Stewart reminded me so much of Tom Hanks in this, which I have never gotten out of anything else I've seen him in (even though those comparisons have been made). Jack Lemmon and Ernie Kovacs are good in their roles, and there are some enjoyable moments, but it's pretty dull and irritating overall.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: I'm not sure even diehard fans of Bewitched (which seemed to take its cues from this) should bother. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes!)

Expiring from The Criterion Channel TONIGHT - That Touch of Mink (1962)

Directed by Marty's Delbert Mann, Cary Grant is effortlessly charming and Doris Day is beautiful and sassy in That Touch of Mink. This is the epitome of a rom-com/chick flick, so your mileage will vary depending on how much you like those. Its zany antics feel very modern compared to other movies of the time, but there are still certain quaint moments - such as Doris Day being embarrassed to vacation with Cary Grant without a wedding ring on. No one is that prim and proper anymore.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: Not a great movie, but a great star showcase. It passes the time nicely. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes!)

With Criterion's deal with Netflix, the label will be releasing Zach Snyder's Army of the Dead, right?

Kind of embarrassing but this has happened to me with Pierrot le Fou

Did Criterion drop Radius 60? On Minding the Gap and Parallax View the mastering was done by “Pixelogic Media”.

Interestingly enough on their website Pixelogic lists HD Ultra Blu ray as a service offered, the tin foil hat thought is that they are gearing up for 4K UHD and Radius 60 was not up to the task?

Pixelogic bought Radius 60 a few years ago.

Ya this is why I only buy movies I've seen and know I really truly love. In looking through most of the Criterion collection I only found 6 to buy during that sale, and I only currently own 1. Most of that stuff just doesn't look anywhere near interesting to me. Now that's mostly due to my tastes which is mostly horror films and it seems like Criterion has a bunch of other things besides that.

I'm such a moron. I got my little box of movies yesterday so last night I settle in to watch The Parallax View but it wasn't in the box. Everything in there was right but it would appear I spent $130 bucks but forgot to order the movie I went there to get in the first place.

Tunes of Glory was pretty freaking great though so, you know, alls well, I guess.

It might've happened to me with Pierrot le fou if not for the original release being one of the discs from the Rot Factory that would supposedly go bad. So I ended up watching it -- movie, extras, and all -- to make sure it would play throughout. Which ended up doubling the enjoyment, because (a) I loved the movie, and (b) there were no problems with the disc.

That never happens with me. Far too many times over the past 10 or so years I'd start to watch a movie on Netflix, think "This just isn't working for me" for a good part of the film, only to find it pull together in the last 20-or-so minutes, and I end up liking the film, and being glad a stuck with it.

Well, actually, there are times when I've given up on a film fairly early on, but I'm sure that it's that I'm too tired to focus on it, or I'm not in the right mood for that particular film. In those instances, I'll put it aside, and give it another try when I'm in a better frame of mind.

My thoughts on My Own Private Idaho from last year (with a bonus review included because I don't feel like editing the quote):

Quote:

My Own Private Idaho (1991)

River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves play gay hustlers in a film by Gus Van Sant. I was expecting a much grittier movie. The artifice of the dialogue didn't quite work for me most of the time. I realize it's meant to be Shakespearean, poetic, lyrical, but it's inconsistently applied and creates a disconnect. It's probably no accident that the best scene in the movie - the campfire scene, which sounds completely natural - wasn't even written by Van Sant. Phoenix wrote and helped direct it, according to IMDb. It's also not surprising to find out that this was originally three scripts combined into one. That accounts for its meandering dream-like quality, which is both a pro and a con. This is a flawed movie, but I think those flaws somehow work and actually accentuate the material, creating something wholly original and memorable. (Subtitles: Yes!)

The Boy With Green Hair (1948)

An anti-war parable starring Dean Stockwell as the titular boy, who is a war orphan. It's easy to see why Stockwell had such a long and successful career. Even at 11-12 (but looking and presumably playing much younger), he was a very good actor. His relationship in the movie with his "gramp" (Pat O'Brien) is lovely. While this is definitely a crowd-pleasing kids' movie and doesn't overstay its welcome at a brief but effective running time of 1 hour and 21 minutes, its message is surprisingly, quietly, effective and profound. (Subtitles: Yes!)
Ultimately, Private Idaho was a major mixed bag for me, even if I ended up leaning toward liking it.

I can't say if you should have stuck with it or not, because I'm almost sure the first twenty minutes were pretty representative of what the rest of the movie was like.

Default Criterion Collection: It's Only Me Who Jon Mulvaney Ignores?

I'd like to know how many here have never received replies to important and reasonable questions-and which they couldn't find answers to anywhere else-from Jon Mulvaney? https://www.criterion.com/contact_us

Really rude, and thanks to that attitude this time I will have to opt for the DVD rather than the BD edition of this https://www.criterion.com/films/2960...-her-to-heaven

after the nasty BD formatting surprise I received upon purchasing this gem. https://www.criterion.com/films/27909-gilda

and this BD almost as badly. https://www.criterion.com/films/635-...-heaven-allows

We are the ones who made niche labels like Criterion what is today. Hell, we put food on Jon's table, only to be continually dissed.

Got my order today.

In other news, Paramount has pre orders up for Don't Look Now, Rosemary's Baby, La Dolce Vita, and Day's of Heaven. Is there any other Paramount titles in the collection? I know Nashville is with Paramount, I want to try and grab which ones I can in case they go OOP.

"Ace in the Hole", "Election", "The Elephant Man", "The Friends of Eddie Coyle", "Harold and Maude", "Medium Cool", "Moonrise", "The Parallax View", "Seconds", "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold", and "The War of the Worlds" are some of the other Paramount Criterions.
