Got an email back from Criterion on OOP titles. Nothing new that hasn’t been posted, but they did tell me that nothing else should be going OOP in the near future.

Were some people saying their copies of Rosemary's Baby, Nashville and Harold & Maude had succumbed to disc rot? I thought I read that back in this thread and checked my discs last night (which I bought on day 1 of release years back) and they play perfectly. Thank god.

You know what I mean?
[Show spoiler]For example, I had a newly-found interest for blind buys when TT went out of business, and the hysteria around them going out of business ignited an interest inside of me for movies I had never any interest in, simply because there were multiple factors that made me want to buy them (Fox titles that will never be reissued, crime movies I had never been interested before). And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Once I bought up the dozens of titles, I moved on to Eureka and Indicator, where I bought up all titles I had a remote interest in.
But I could afford it. Even then, there were already some titles that were OOP, because others wanted them, but clearly also because scalpers bought them up when they were in low numbers (scalper lurkers on here, or fans on here, or alerted by tweets and instagram posts).

Even now, there are titles I might enjoy, and would blind buy at retail price, but I can't because of the reasons above, so in the end it's my loss, for not maturing fast enough to know I'd want them, but also because of scalpers.
So if someone says they are going to buy them up for scalping purposes, well, other posters have given already an appropriate response
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. And I understood the point of your original post (as I stated). But now you are conflating two separate issues. The Criterion titles went OOP (and without any notice). The market can't "still be there for those who in due time will come to desire those titles" because the Criterion versions no longer exist. Period. The same for TT stock (although that took a bit longer to play out).

Every collector knows that titles can go OOP, and that OOP titles are often snapped up quickly by those looking to profit from it. I don't condone scalping, and I've certainly lost out on a number of occasions because of it.

And as you say, the member here who unadvisedly posted his intentions has received the inevitable feedback.

Those should be good. They are pretty far from the titles that had issues. Criterion should replace OOP discs if you email them, though.

Heard back from Mr. Mulvaney. Only the following titles are out of print:
DAYS OF HEAVEN
DON'T LOOK NOW
HAROLD AND MAUDE
LA DOLCE VITA
NASHVILLE
ROSEMARY'S BABY

I specifically asked about a few others and was advised that nothing else in the catalog except for those titles are due to be out of print any time soon. The other Paramount titles will be restocked soon. This includes The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

Does anyone know whether the next criterion sale will be through Barnes and Noble or directly through criterion? I plan to buy a gift certificate so I’ll be prepared.

Fincher has two. Most of the Nolan movies have 4K releases. Why not get those?

I got one too, and just to set everyone's mind at ease I'd asked about the Fellini set and they confirmed that there is no risk to the set, it will be staying in print and will retain LDV.

I have them already.

What other does Fincher have except Benjamin Button?

Some friends recommended me to get these versions, said they are better.

The Game.

Oh, and I'd wager Mank will come eventually as well.

It seems to me that people are panic buying anything that may be out of stock on Criterion's web site or on Amazon, maybe speculating that they are going or have gone OOP, too.

The cheapest copy of The Red Shoes on eBay right now is like $50. I see several copies of The Lady Vanishes have gone for more than $50.

I don't take the same exceptions to JW's strategy that others here do. What upsets me more is a description like this:

"This is the RARE AUTHENTIC first-printing from 2010, Special Director Approved Edition which is now OUT-OF-PRINT, very hard to find and HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE!"

If you own a title that you are willing to part with, you should be able to get what the market dictates, but these titles are 1) absolutely not rare and 2) not particularly hard to find either.

On the same note, I'd steer far clear of people who list something on eBay as OOP when it isn't. That's what grinds my gears.

I contacted Criterion to ask about the Fellini set and they confirmed it's not going OOP

Quote:
Hi Michael,

Thank you for your email! You are certainly welcome to purchase the ESSENTIAL FELLINI set, if you wish, but there's no rush.
LA DOLCE VITA will continue to be part of the set and the latest OOP status of the standalone release for this does not affect the FELLINI box set.

We do not typically disclose things that are about to go out of print, but I can assure you that there is nothing else in our catalog that is due to be OOP in the near future.

For additional reference, these are the titles that recently went out of print for us due to licensing:
DAYS OF HEAVEN
DON'T LOOK NOW
HAROLD AND MAUDE
LA DOLCE VITA
NASHVILLE
ROSEMARY'S BABY

As usual, if we should ever recover the rights to any of our out-of-print titles, we will happily re-release them.
Hope this puts your mind at ease and have a great weekend!

Best,
Kseniya

It definitely looks like Paramount pulled back the heavy-hitters to release on Blu-ray themselves. None of the rest really have their status.

Yep, that's what it sounds like. Luckily I had most of the OOPs. Well, I still went ahead and picked up a few other Paramount-licensed titles from Deep Discount and Amazon, just to be sure...and managed to grab a copy of Nashville in the last 24 hours from B&N. I think the only other ones I want and don't have yet are Parallax View, War of the Worlds, and possibly the Sternberg Silent set.

Thanks for this. Although I have the standalone, I had planned to pick up the Fellini set during the next B&N event.
