Mr. Mulvaney: The movies treasured by many of us were shot in aspect ratios ranging mostly between the wide angle formats 2.35:1 or 1.85:1 or the squarish 1.33:1-and rarely, 1.37:1. In any case, many cinephiles often enjoy varying the magnification of select images while viewing. That is, as was always available with DVDs, wide range and on the fly slow motion and zoom control can provide a more varied and intimate connection with visual content. Unfortunately, BDs are almost always authored using software (e.g. Oracle’s BD-J platform) which, arbitrarily (?), disables the player’s zoom and sometimes also slow motion controls. Examples are enabled zoom control for https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Lolita-Blu-ray/15355/ and https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Spiri...Blu-ray/13523/ but disabled zoom for https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Psycho-Blu-ray/7741/ https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/All-T...Blu-ray/99404/ https://www.criterion.com/films/27896-harold-and-maude https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Gilda-Blu-ray/91898/ The last title, like all non-wide screen formats, I watch on a 4:3 screen , proportionally identical to the academy 1.33:1 Academy aspect ratio. But as "Gilda" was filmed in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio format there are vertical and horizontal black bars around the entire image, thus making the image look smaller than it already is on a 32” 4:3 screen. Though no bargain, I would gladly part with some content loss by cropping (not stretching) to overshoot the bars. But unlike Twilight Time's BD release of "Whirlpool", also shot in 1.37:1, https://www.hometheaterforum.com/whi...lu-ray-review/ https://www.highdefdigest.com/blog/s...ies-whirlpool/ , I have no such option because Criterion’s authoring disabled the player's zoom control. Same problem with this Criterion release https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Leave...lu-ray/258990/ As there can be no logical reason for doing otherwise, when authoring all future Blu-Ray releases please insure full blu-ray player functionality of slow motion and zoom control. Thank you. |

I was close to getting the DVD for The Human Condition several times but this will make for a better blind-buy. |

I'm glad that I can finally upgrade my HC DVDs. I hope Jigoku and Onibaba will be upgraded from DVD to Blu-Ray next.

As somebody who mostly just adds the odd "classic" release to my Blu-Ray collection these days, I could not be happier about the trifecta of The Furies / Nightmare Alley / Pickup On South Street now upcoming. I've never ever seen the latter of these two films, but as someone who owns 50+ noirs, these are obviously two films that I have always heard about and have been eagerly waiting to see restored in beautiful high-definition for at least a decade. I gasped out loud when I saw the announcement for Pickup this morning... great way to start the day. I feel like this moves up Fallen Angel / D.O.A. / Thieves' Highway into the top tier of noirs not available on Blu-Ray now, maybe also High Sierra which is probably unlikely to be added to the Criterion collection. But I feel like my noir collection is getting close to "complete" (if there ever is such a thing, hah).
Meanwhile, I'm still holding out hope for Bringing Up Baby and a Master Kurosawa boxset, maybe a few other notable classics, but I'm really happy with the upcoming April-May-June releases overall. I also think Criterion's offerings have been extremely diverse lately, offering at least 1-2 films to all types of cinema lovers with recent announcements. I think Criterion is doing a laudable job of rounding their collection out at this advanced stage of the game; I have no complaints there. But in the back of my head, I still wonder about when they will make the jump to 4K. Never a dealbreaker for me, but still a curiosity. |

according to the site here for DVD I have 52 skus but that's including Eclipse so not many that I need to upgrade when the time comes plus a handful only on the wishlist that also needs upgrading but maybe not get them.
I can wait I've got to many in the collection 135 titles and now the channel. They can take their time and I still be happy when I can upgrade. |
