FYE apparently does not send cancellation emails for orders. Guess Nashville was a no go.

I watched The Father last night in the movie theater.

Criterion should release this movie.

Because dementia is a terrible thing and more people should be aware of this.

Isn't this Sony Pictures Classics though? They'll do their own Blu-ray

Definitely need more Asian cinema in there. Like the whole Lee Chang-dong catalogue. And Chinese movies that aren’t 40-50 year old Wu xia.

More people would be likely to be aware of this through streaming or a cheaper studio disc than a Criterion release.

It is. And I wish it wasn't. But wishing won't change this fact.

Probably. But I'm a bonafide Criterion snob. So I want me a Criterion.

To be honest that shit hits too close to the bone for me so definitely not watching it. It sure looks like a powerhouse of a performance though.

Hopkins would be winning the Oscar this year under other circumstances. I think he goes through every human emotion you can think of in the course of 90 minutes and I don’t think he’s ever been better.

And Colman has to be the front runner in her category I’m guessing. I’ve seen the other performances and they’re just nowhere near as strong. Gonna take another Oscar from Glenn Close I think

The Sony Pictures Classics line is nice, actually. I've started mining their offerings within the last year or so, and I think I have a good start (I forgot to include Call Me By Your Name in the picture). They won't be loaded up with extras like Criterions are-usually they have a few bonuses; a director commentary is fairly standard, and one or two from either a making of documentary, still galleries, deleted scenes, and occasionally, a director Q&A. For instance, Leviathan director Andrey Zvyagintsev did a Q&A at the Toronto Film Festival, and that's included as a blu-ray exclusive.

They have a really nice group of Best Foreign Film winners and nominees. I like them for contemporary foreign and domestic releases as a supplement to Criterion.

And it's not impossible for a film to get a Criterion release after being with SPC. Before Midnight was released by SPC before Criterion got distribution rights to the entire trilogy. So, that business relationship has at least been established on some level.

Now if only they'd release a damn Blu-ray for Wong Kar-Wai's 2046 (or license it to Criterion).

It's in the upcoming Wong Kar-Wai box set.

For some reason, I was thinking that 2046 wasn't included in the set.

Yes, although the Criterion release of Before Midnight drops a few extras from the SPC release.

Sometimes they're region free other times they're region locked.

Mr. Turner under SPC adds an additional commentary, featurette, deleted scene, trailer over the UK release. Amour has a 40 minute Q&A over the UK release, A Separation adds a commentary and interviews over the UK, Leviathan adds a commentary over the UK.

Waltz with Bashir has a commentary and a few other extras, but lacks the feature length making of and deleted scenes from the UK release. Frozen River has a commentary but the UK release has a couple of interview; Loveless in the UK has an additional Q&A. Volver has many more extras on the UK DVD too.

I saw The Burnt Orange Heresy in the cinema so not rushing to get the disc, but it does have some nice extras like a commentary.

I have a number of their releases I want to buy yet (shocking, I know ). I just ordered An Education-the film has a fantastic cast, including Carey Mulligan, Emma Thompson, Alfred Molina, Olivia Williams, Peter Sarsgaard and Rosamund Pike. I don't get some of the vitriol that's been directed towards Carey Mulligan in the past. I've always liked her. I think she's a fine actress, and she's not afraid of taking risks with the projects she chooses.

Actually, one of the lines' selections served as my introduction to foreign film, Run Lola Run. Buying that really piqued my interest in SPC.

I watched 'The Forgiveness of Blood' on blu-ray the other day. Very interesting movie from Criterion. Provided a 'slice of life' from the goings on in Northern Albania. I highly enjoyed it!

Great movie, and has been on my wishlist angrily staring back at me for a few years.

I talked with some folks that worked on that movie who told me Joshua Marston learned to speak Albanian to make the movie. [!]

To add to my post about The Father.

I cried towards the end of this film. Tears streamed down my cheeks. I was blown away by the empathy portrayed in that final scene. There was only 1 other person in the theater, a man, sitting way in the back, plus my friend John about 3 rows behind me, so I had plenty of time and space to let out my emotions in public without anyone noticing. A grown man shedding tears? Nothing wrong with that. But this movie was incredible, 4 stars all the way, and if its Hopkins' final hurrah as an actor, then this was a masterpiece for his final bookend.

A beautiful humanistic film that deserves the acclaim its receiving.

This movie at moments reminded me of another humanistic film called Awakenings, even though that was completely different, but it revealed the human condition in all its frailty. Films like these make us realize that we are merely mortal and only have a finite amount of time to fulfill whatever dreams we have in our lives before we lose it all.

I just hope Criterion (and other labels) aren't done with releasing Altman films. There's plenty that deserve to see some attention.

Does anybody think Carnal Knowledge would get a release from Criterion or another boutique label? I'm shocked it hasn't gotten one by now.
