If you barely got four of the five the day after the discontinuation, for me to search for them three weeks later may as well be a lost cause.

True enough. The point, though, would you have done better after three weeks if the announcements were a month earlier? I doubt it. As others have said, the collectors and scalpers would've cleaned things out in short order regardless.

Won't know until I try under that exact circumstance. In-store stocks vary across cities, and I don't know how stores handle resupply or how Criterion would proceed on resupply under a looming license expiration. Y'all may be right and Criterion has a hard cut in the supply in advance to prepare for the transition, and not doing it early would put me in a disadvantage.

It's a big gamble.

If anybody on here who lives in the Twin Cities is iinterested, the Barnes and Noble at the Mall of America still has a DVD and a blu-ray copy of Days of Heaven. They don't have any of the other Paramount titles that went out of print. I wouldn't wait too much longer though.

Thanks, but I already found my copy at the Maplewood location the day after they announced they were going OOP. I got Harold and Maude from Amazon and Nashville from another online retailer

This is a bit of a deep cut, and I know Flicker Alley released a Blu-ray some years back, but I really wish Criterion would do their own edition of The Most Dangerous Game (1932). The DVD is over 20 years old now and it's never gone out of print, but they also have never bothered upgrading it to Blu-ray.

I would rather them upgrade to BluRay, King of Kings(1927), as Lobster Films in France released a BluRay, though it is a bit pricey, but King of Kings is one of the epic silents and a Cecil B DeMille film also.

As much as I didn't enjoy scrambling to grab the OOP titles this time, I do think not announcing them is the best way. They had their flash sale and shifted most of the stock to people who just wanted those titles without an inkling they were going OOP. All those people clearly wanted them more than I did or I'd have bought them already. If people want to hoover up multiple copies to eBay then the further in advance you announce the more chance they get whereas now they'd have been lucky to get more than one copy so most of the inflated eBay copies will just be regular folks cashing in on the price upswing on the one copy they already had rather than people who amassed a crate full to see them to retirement.

Well, tired of waiting the eternity for Criterion to issue Gillo Pontecorvo's "Queimada!" (AKA "Burn!"), starring Marlon Brando, (tis Kino that says they have had it forever), I finally caved and imported a German blu ray of it. It contains an extended cut with only German and Italian language options, and it has the slightly shorter U.S. cut with the English track (including Brando's own voice) as a supplement. I understand and can speak a good bit of Italian, and of course prefer the English cut in this case, for Brando's own voice. I waited for years...

So, the point being, you're welcome to anyone seeking a Criterion blu ray of this film. It will likely be released shortly, since I ordered this, LOL.

I, myself, would without doubt, double dip if/when a Criterion edition ever materializes.

Fingers crossed, but highly unlikely, I guess.

By the way, the "new 2K Restoration from the original 35mm elements" on the German Wicked Media release looks a lot better than the Flicker Alley release.

I'll stick to my DVD for the time being. Hopefully Criterion or MGM release it sooner rather than later.

well after a some days I feel like quitting my subscription. It's too much work to watch something and I've tried watching 2 films but in the end I rather watch what I own anyway. I can use my new couch instead of having to sit at the computer.

I suppose i could wait a little while longer while I do have a free month but I don't see myself really using this.

Who has the rights to the Handmade Films catalog in the US? Since CC have released some of their stuff on blu-ray, I'd really like to see Withnail and I and How to Get Ahead in Advertising on blu from them. If not, Arrow.

I thought they had the rights to those but maybe the DVDs are OOP. I could be wrong though.

Criterion has the rights to those films, as well as 'The Long Good Friday', 'Mona Lisa', and 'Powwow Highway'. Though I'm not too sure if Criterion is licensing directly from Handmade films.

The DVDs are OOP, Withnail and I got a blu-ray and DVD from Image in 2010, but has since gone OOP. So, not too sure who currently has the rights, but I'd imagine Criterion might have when they reprinted Time Bandits on blu-ray.

I looked at the back cover of Time Bandits and it says "Under exclusive license from RLJ. © HandMade Film Partnership 1981." I imgaine they got the rights in 2013 or 2014, when Time Bandits came out, considering the imagine releases of all of these films seemed to go OOP then.

And I'm still waiting on them to upgrade the Eisenstein Sound Years box set with Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible. These DVDs are now twenty years old, and they were some of the first things that got me into Criterion in the first place. Alex and the Ivans had releases in France recently, so what's the holdup?
