That set probably won't have a spine number like the Bergman, Varda, and Fellini set since several of the titles would already have their own spine number.

Yeah, I was just amusing myself. One hundred and eleven / eleven hundred, etc....

It was already restored last year by IndieCollect. Criterion/Janus apparently have the theatrical and home video rights to it, though I can't seem to find any way to back that up.

Now they really have to release California Split.
RIP George Segal.

I remember getting a chance to see "California Split", projected on 35mm film, at an outdoor screening in the summertime, a few years ago. It was a 70s vintage print, too, so of course had all of the original music and so on.

I have wanted a blu ray of that one for years. Hopefully, it's coming soon.

I just got "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" in the Warner Archive sale, too.

RIP George Segal.

Sometimes they did care about the spine number, as in

#666

Also, Criterion initially gave #984 to Europa, Europa when they announced it, only to realize later that they also had 1984 in the same month and switched the spine numbers.

A Gould/Segal reunion interview would've been wonderful.

Decided to catch up on some Criterion stuff last night and watched Suburbia (streaming) and Smooth Talk (disc). It ended up being a great double feature. The movies tackle similar themes and share the same time period but strike a very different tone in terms of the settings and characters. Ultimately I preferred Suburbia but I liked both movies a lot.

Well, they can always talk to Kim Morgan and get this epic 2014 interview included in the booklet.

Expiring from The Criterion Channel - Fun with Dick and Jane (1977)

After the sad news of George Segal's passing, I was in the mood to watch something of his. Since this is expiring from The Criterion Channel (but it's also available on Prime streaming), I decided it was the perfect choice.

George Segal and Jane Fonda play a husband and wife who turn to armed robbery after Segal loses his job. You can see why Segal was such a big star in the 1970s and one of the highlights of shows like The Goldbergs later in his career - he is effortlessly entertaining and charming. Jane Fonda is, of course, great too.

Some of the humor is outdated, but that's par for the course with older comedies.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: All in all, Fun with Dick and Jane is light, fun, and funny - an enjoyable satire. (Subtitles/Captions: Yes!)

Is “Happy Together” an lgbt film? I am wanting to see some more LGBT criterion films. I’ve seen Weekend, My Beautiful Laundrette, My Own Private Idaho, Midnight Cowboy, Blue is the Warmest Color, Desert Hearts. Is there anymore? I wish criterion would release “Beautiful Thing”. It is very much needed for a restoration and upgrade from the dvd. Any suggestions would be great!

Yes. It’s about two men and their romantic relationship relationship.

Lizzie Borden said in a now-deleted tweet that Criterion was releasing 'Working Girls' in July. Credits to dwk for finding this.

I'm not terribly familiar with this film, but Wikipedia says it's Miramax. Is it still with them?

I expected, “Born in Flames”. To be the one prioritized. Especially since it’s been on their channel for awhile but I’m excited for Working Girls too!

I guess not, because the filmmaker herself uploaded the entire film on YouTube last year when the shutdown started (now deleted). She was also the producer of the film, so I guess she could regain the right at some point.

Not comprehensive though, as you could easily add something like All About My Mother, Beyond the Hills, even things like Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Not a Blu-ray release, but Victim (1961) in the Basil Dearden Eclipse set also comes to my mind. If you're region B compatible, there's a fine UK Blu-ray.

And last but not least, perhaps not an overt LGBT film, but unlike its reputation as a quintessential femme fatale film noir, Gilda (1946) is actually about a twisted tale of a bisexual homme fatale mobster torn between his male boss/lover and the boss' new girl who knows his past (and sexual orientation) and loves/hates him. Believe me, I'm not reading too much into it. It's all there and Eddie Muller, the czar of noir, talks about it with validated evidence on the disc as well as in his outro for the TCM Noir Alley show:
