I hope the B&N stores keep several copies of Bringing Up Baby in stock because that one is going to fly off the shelves.

If there was one Stanley Kubrick film I'd like to add to the Criterion Collection (no, not The Shining), it would have to be Eyes Wide Shut. The kicker would be, we'd get a ton of supplements and rare deleted scenes and outtakes from his mysterious final film plus interviews and never before seen behind the scenes photographs and possibly footage. Of course that would be a fantasy to say the least but one has to dream.

I've always wondered how much exists from EWS. Obviously Kubrick was big on destroying the footage he didn't use, but he'd only just locked the edit when he died and he had history of going back and tweaking things so it feels like there's a good chance all the material exists still in Warner's vaults. That said, given how much he disliked that sort of thing existing you wonder if they'd ever release it.

Without being alarmist I'd plan to get there day one of the sale - and as early as possible.

B&N used to restock quite quickly during Criterion events (often 2-3 business days), but for the two held in 2020 people were reporting stores that did not restock at all due to supply chain issues resulting from the pandemic. Same for online. Hopefully better in July 2021 - but the early bird gets the worm, and all that.

I seem to have the touch, too, LOL.

I waited for years and years for a US BD of "The Pianist". I finally gave up, imported a version from the UK, and it arrived to me just four days before Shout Factory announced that they are releasing it in July. I am double dipping.

I've already told everyone in the "The Pianist" thread that they're most welcome, LOL.

It's happened to me quite a few times, actually. You'd think I'd learn.

It happened to me last year with Cronenberg's "Crash", Lynch's "The Elephant Man", and Allen's "A Rainy Day in New York". Imported them all, and just months later, I was double dipping left and right.

I need some more patience....

Before you get patience. Could you try ordering some DVD’s of Prince of the City?

Criterion seem to have done a significant restock of their own store with a lot of titles that were 'currently unavailable' being back in, but it's far from all of them. With such a big catalogue and supply chains stressed it's not surprising they can't keep everything in stock so if people are desperate for particular titles then yeah I'd say getting in early is essential.

This is my plan also, luckily I work 10 minutes from my nearest B&N w/ a media section, so I can probably pop in before work, depending on what day of the week the sale begins.

That didn't work, that time. I've HAD that DVD since it was released in 2007.

I'd rather have ONE FALSE MOVE than DEAD PREZ.

Very interested in the Tarkovsky, but otherwise no must haves in this latest round of announcements. I know, I know, BABY is fun and I'm glad so many people are excited for it, but for me it has always fallen apart in the last 20 minutes.

Maybe some good sales will make these more appealing for me, but I stress that I am very glad for those who love them. I don't need every new release to be specifically in my wheelhouse in order for me to be excited. This hobby is for everyone, not just me.

I'm curious, why would Mirror get a 2K restoration but not a 4K?

Some of the other releases this month (i.e. Deep Cover) had 4K restorations. Just wondering is it an elements issue? why not just do 4K?

I love Criterion more than most but we need to move beyond the label. There are so many boutique labels doing such great work.
I think at this point Criterion's niche is releasing old Hollywood movies, films that would not otherwise get a blu-ray release, and rescues - movies in dire need of being prepped for an HD release.

The major studies (and a few boutique labels) can handle the more recent fair and may release a UHD disc.

I think you're confusing them with Kino Lorber

Criterion did a post for Chaplin's b-day, and I realized it has been over a decade and there are still some that haven't been released. And it's been a little while too since the last one. . .

The first 4K release...a 4K scan and restoration of every Chaplin short film and feature film.

Except A King in New York, of course, for reasons.

They did do a new 4K restoration of The Great Dictator in 2020. So...
